Marathon Handbook editors Alex Cyr, Michael Doyle and Katelyn Tocci gather together for their weekly group chat. Katelyn just ran a marathon in New Hampshire, where there was snow at the start line and she ran down a big ol’ mountain (01:32).
It was her first in many years, so we thought it would be a great opportunity to unpack how each of us recovers when the goal race is done (23:19), and also how we get up off the mat, and refocus and the importance of goal setting.
We share with you each of our own big goals for the rest of the year and beyond (39:07).
And then, Alex, our Lord of the Shoes, explains this golden era in “super trainers,” the Frankenstein category between a super shoe and an everyday trainer, with recent releases from the likes of Hoka and On Running (56:27).
Alex shares his thoughts on whether or not these shoes are the Goldilocks for workouts and long runs, if they are worth the pretty high cost of adding them to the roster, or if they are just marketing hype.
Hosts: Alex Cyr, Michael Doyle, Katelyn Tocci

Editors Katelyn Tocci and Michael Doyle chat about what it's like to cover Boston, then turn around and go to London for the marathon six days later (00:20), former NHLer and giant man Zdeno Chara's insane back-to-back marathon performances (04:44). Then we dig into what the heck is going on with this Parkrun controversy (08:05), whether or not race results should be in the public domain (27:41), and who owns your NIL in a race? (33:27).
Then we discuss the crazy 2025 London Marathon Lottery, which nearly hit 1 million entrants (34:15), how to get into London if you don't get selected (39:00), and what the wild popularity of the Marathon Majors means for the running industry overall (45:05).
Finally, Katelyn takes us through her pre-marathon race week prep (53:12), which serves as a guide book for a marathoner!

This this episode Marathon Handbook's Alex Cyr and Michael Doyle are live in Boston to cover the 2024 Boston Marathon immediately after the race.
We break down what it's like to run the Boston Marathon, all the gear and neat brand action on the ground throughout marathon weekend, as well as an analysis of both the women's and men's elite races.
In this Born To Run 2 interview, we talk to author, journalist and runner extraordinaire, Chris McDougall, and ultrarunner and coach champion, Eric Orton. In this follow-up to the bestseller Born To Run, McDougall and Orton share their practical "how to" guide to running - from drills to speed to shoes to nutrition.
We talk about the original book, it's inception and ultimate impact, the state of the barefoot shoe market today, the new book, their collab with @xeroshoes , and plenty more!
Three-time Olympic champion Gabby Thomas joins Alex Cyr and Katelyn Tocci to break down the tech, mindset, and training that shape her sprinting career. Gabby explains how super spikes compare to distance super shoes (00:26), why she limits their use in training (01:10), and how wearables and accurate metrics guide sprint performance (01:48). She shares the data she actually watches during workouts (02:40), how she manages recovery and sleep without obsession (04:25), and what it’s like navigating post-Olympic highs and lows (05:30). Gabby gets candid about her “killer instinct” on race day (06:53), her surprisingly zen off-track personality (08:35), and why she’s taking on the 400m next season (09:23). She talks discovering Strava (10:52), balancing joy with competitive drive, her Vogue shoot experience (12:10), and how new leagues like Athlos can empower athletes (14:14). The episode closes with a fun debate on what distance she and Katelyn could race head-to-head (16:29).
