Recently signed to an extension, Luis Castillo was brought into the Mariners organization to be the Ace of the pitching staff. He has most certainly showed that in his short tenure with Seattle. The current 5 game stretch he is on however, is not very ace like. He has actually been pretty abysmal by his standards. In game 2 against the Boston Red Sox, Castillo labored for 5 innings and gave up 7 runs, 5 of which were earned. When should the Mariners press the panic button on Luis Castillo? Or should they at all?

A hot start to the month of May (shocking, we know) has Mariners fans wondering how sustainable is this success? The pitching staff has been unreal and yet we are still only at .500. Seemingly on the verge of a breakthrough, can the pitching staff keep bailing out the lack of potent offense day in a day out? With spurts of runs and timely hitting scattered throughout the 6 wins thus for the 8 games in May, the pitching has been the key factor. The Mariners will likely level out at some point on the mound and return to human form, but hopefully the hitting turns the corner at the right times as well. The Mariners feel like they are in a desperate need for some change on their roster. Nothing extreme but some of the guys we brought in over the off-season just haven't had the level of success we had hoped for. Getting ready to wrap up the first road trip of the season, the Mariners play the Cubs one last time before returning home on Friday. The road trip has seen some ups and downs and against the Cubs it feels as though the Mariners have hit the lowest point of the season. Chris Flexen unfortunately has not filled the shoes of Robbie Ray well enough and lost a 7 run lead to the Cubs on April 11th.
