  • Introducing Not Without my Sister

Thank you for listening to Episode 1 of Not Without My Sister, which we have tentatively titled, 'Not Without Our... Mother?' This episode is dedicated to, and focuses on, our Mother, who, for all of her Irish Mammyisms, has her own individual quirks and foibles which make her – we think – just interesting enough to dedicate an hour-long podcast episode to. We hope you enjoy it :)

If you have any topic suggestions, or subjects you'd like us to chat about, please do let us know! Leave a comment on our website or contact us via Instagram @rosemarymaccabe and @beatricemaccabe.

Here are a few of the things we reference throughout the episode. You'll find the transcription here.

    • Liadan Hynes' How to Fall Apart
    • Goldie Hawn's "brain breaks"
    • Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
    • Not Without My Daughter, starring Sally Field and Alfred Molina
    • The Vietnamese author whose book Beatrice discusses is named Phuc Tran. The book is Sigh, Gone. You can listen to Tran discuss the subjunctive, or its absence, in this NPR talk.
    • Beatrice's favourite mystery Sindy Instagram account (a Sindstagram account?) is @Sindy_the_traveler

Not Without My Sister is presented by sisters Beatrice and Rosemary Mac Cabe. Editing is by Liam Geraghty. Original music by Cody D. Records. Original illustration by Lindsay Neilson.

Not Without My Sister is a production of The Warren.

  • #BlackLivesMatter | Erica Cody: Redux | on growing up black in Ireland, sports vs singing and the trials of the multi-talented

This episode was recorded way back when, one of the first episodes of the first season of How to be Sound. This is me revisiting that episode – the only episode I've recorded with a person of colour, which is a massive failing on my part and something I will be looking to improve in the future. I've done a bad job of offering my listeners equal and fair representation of today's world, and for that I can only apologise. #BlackLivesMatter

You'll find Erica Cody on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – and you can check out her music videos (you should) on YouTube, too.

Thank you so much for listening to How to be Sound. Please take some time to rate and/or review on iTunes; it helps other people who might like it to find How to be Sound! Producer extraordinaire Liam Geraghty's Meet Your Maker is also well worth a listen.  Mother of Pod. Just in case you don't know what a Billie Barry kid is... BE WARNED: this will scar you for life. Check out BIMM, Ireland's music school (it's not really like Fame, allegedly).  Step Up: High Water starring Jade Chynoweth is really, really good. I promise. Watsky: Moral of the Story is a good song to listen to (on repeat) when you're worrying about what other people are doing (unlike Erica, who's focused on her own sh*t).

  • Julie Mc Loughlin on how to be sound

Julie Mc Loughlin and her husband Owen left steady, full-time jobs to set up their own business after a spot of creative DIY piqued the interest of friends, family and, well, everyone who heard about their off-kilter wedding invitations. I sat down with Julie to talk about the business of business, creativity and conceptualisation, working from home and how Jando got off the ground.

This episode was, crucially, recorded before the current pandemic – and it's more important than ever to support Irish art so, if you're in the market for some new prints, check out Jando's offering.

  • Molly Finn on how to be sound

Molly Finn (NOT her real name) set up an OnlyFans when she realised there was some interest in her holiday bikini pics – and because, surprisingly, her mother asked why not. She sits down to talk about the democratisation of pornography, whether or not OnlyFans is sex work and how much she charges to send a picture of her feet.

For more on OnlyFans, read 'How OnlyFans Changed Sex Work Forever' from the New York Times.

  • Emma Langford on how to be sound

Limerick-based singer-songwriter Emma Langford sits down to talk about touring in Germany, producing an album with three months' notice, the importance of using your voice – and platform – to further the causes you believe in, and whether or not she's ever just thought about writing a rubbish pop song to rake in the €€€.

  • Claire Garvey on how to be sound

Dublin fashion designer Claire Garvey had a week to design two outfits for Eimear Noone, the first female conductor ever to conduct the orchestra at the Academy Awards – but she didn't let that get in her way! (See the result on Claire's Instagram.) We sit down to talk fashion design, the Irish arts scene, surviving through a recession and how relying on trends will never be an issue for her.

  • Lindsay Leggett on how to be sound

Lindsay Leggett IS The Sugarist – she sugars people of all shapes, sizes and genders from her Temple Bar studio.

Lindsay mentions her Dad being from Corktown, Detroit – there's a really interesting article about the history of the area from the Detroit Historical Society here.

From Lindsay's site: why sugaring is better than waxing.

If you haven't already, buy and read Lindy West's book. Please use my Amazon affiliate link because it helps me make bank.

You can check out merch from The Vulva Gallery here.

Watch the (NSFW) clip from the Australian Hungry Beast documentary news series on labiaplasty here.

The X Factor clip I refer to, featuring the Pussycat Dolls "singing" through their greatest hits, is here.

I mention Virgie Tovar and her body positive selfies – follow her on Instagram!

FINALLY, Lindsay refers to Ologies, a podcast presented by Alie Ward, the BFF of My Favorite Murder's Georgia!

(And I attributed this piece on problematic true-crime obsessions to Wired, when it is in fact from The New Republic. I'm fired.)
