This week on the podcast Mikki chats to Ryan O’Connor, Optometrist based in Hamilton, all about his interest in metabolic health and eye health. They discuss the risk factors for some commonly seen eye conditions (including glaucoma, retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, AMD and cataracts) and the relationship with metabolic health and why it matters what we eat.
We also discuss protocols he suggests help protect our eyes as we age, with some practical tips to support eye health (including supplements). In addition, they discuss how his interest begun around the time of a severe concussion that put him on the sidelines as an up and coming rugby player.
Ryan, an optometrist by day, podcast host of the Stag Roar podcast, likes to explore what “success” means and how individuals from different backgrounds go about achieving it.
As a Practicing Optometrist, his special interests are in Behavioural Optometry, Sports Vision and Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery. HIs qualifications include BSc Anatomy (Neurology and Reproduction) and BOptom.
He is a sportsman with a long history in rugby, swimming, soccer, running, waterpolo and is
