  • Testosterone and men's health - with Ali Gilbert

This week on the podcast I speak to men’s health expert Ali Gilbert on … mens health! Ali and I talk about the normalisation of the ‘dad bod’ and implications this has on the optimal health and wellbeing of men. We discuss myths around testosterone supplementation, when it could be beneficial for men, and the consequences of low testosterone  (and what is considered normal on lab tests which is actually functionally low).

We talk about what are the main issues that are driving down mens testosterone levels, common signs that this might be the case and practical things men can focus on to help optimise and change their energy. Finally, Ali talks about her virtual summit, the Silverback Summit, that is taking place in early May, it is free to register, which has a range of experts in the field that discuss all things mens health.

  • Do you need to alter your training through the menstrual cycle? - Lauren Colenso-Semple

Welcome to this episode of our podcast, where we delve into the evidence-based approach to menstrual cycle training. Our guest today is Lauren, who has extensive experience in this field as a coach and researcher. Lauren holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and nutrition from the University of Buffalo, and a master's degree from the University of South Florida. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at McMaster University in Canada, under the guidance of Stu Phillips.

In this episode, Lauren shares her insights on the topic of menstrual cycle training based on her PhD research. She talks about this from both a coach and a researcher experience, and talks about the limitations of current techniques used in the literature to determine menstrual cycle stage and how her research will contribute to a more robust evidence base that will determine whether the added complexity of menstrual phase training is necessary to understand more fully the female experience in training and performance.

Overall, this episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding the evidence-based approach to menstrual cycle training.

Lauren is currently pursuing a PhD in Integrative Physiology at McMaster University. Her research focuses on the impact of exercise, nutrition, and hormones on skeletal muscle. Lauren has worked with hundreds of clients in person and online, including recreational lifters, moms-to-be, and aspiring powerlifters and physique athletes

This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to Amy Lee Bowler, PhD Candidate, sports nutritionist, and registered dietitian about the use of CGMs for athletes. We discuss glucose metabolism and what impacts glucose use outside of just the food we eat and the sporting contest. We discuss the strengths and limitations of CGM in the athlete context and where Amy feels the application for this is going. We also discuss a recent paper from her PhD looking at dietitian practices at assessing for energy availability in athletes and the key considerations her research found.
