Hurunnessa Fariad joins us today to talk about how masajid can and DO do it right by appointing female leadership. As an employee of a major Muslim American masjid, she’s experienced that representative leadership exists and succeeds.
Huri’s takeaways today include ALL women have talent. Plug in to her strengths and watch her soar because she will always take her kids and community with her! We also talk about women vs women in the masjid. Don’t miss it!

Hind Makki discusses all-male panels and additional exclusionary practices that marginalize Muslimahs, both in the audience and in expert spaces, at conferences, seminars, and in the masjid space itself! These under-represented panels are hurting our institutions and driving financially independent and Islamically educated women away from the masjid and Islamic organizations. Since many of us had to learn how to live without the masjid during key parts of our worship, are we going to go back if we continue to be under-represented there? Let's discuss the bottom line.
For anyone who isn’t Muslim, there are some great breakdowns about Islam in here for you, too.
How do you feel when you see all-male panels on parenting?

Kristy Sabbah joins us today as a former masjid board member and community leader. She reveals issues women on the board face and what they need from the community to support them. Let’s talk under-representation, leadership accountability, cultural relevance, tokenism, and modeling board leadership for our daughters. The Muslim American masjid experience is so diverse, and our masjid (and organization) board representation must be as well.

Mommying While Muslim has never been late to drop an episode except Eid al Fitr 2021! We hope our lovely audience understands how excited we were to celebrate with our families and we wanted to edit something worth your listening ears.
Today is an opportunity to hear about our experiences in the masjid that hurt our hearts because we know the masjid can do better by us as women, mothers, and for our children. Hey, no one’s perfect, and no masjid is perfect, and we don’t want perfection. Can we attend masjid (once it’s safe again) without women, our very own sisters, calling out our kids or what we are wearing (or aren’t wearing), and judging each other over stuff we really don’t have too much jurisdiction over. Let’s do our work, and let Allah do His work. But we have to start by addressing what’s wrong and what each of us can do better ourselves.
Our goal is to get our unmosqued Muslim families mosqued again. Let’s make it home again.

Zaiba and Uzma “call the midwife today” because how can you have new mommy memoirs without one?!?!?! Krystina Friedlander, Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) joins us today to talk about her journey to midwifery and its foundations in social justice work and original motherhood. Some of us know how miraculous these bodies are, but a lot more of us don’t know how much at risk those magnificent machines are outside of a maternal village of birth workers and momsisters. Birth trauma and poor outcomes are becoming more prevalent when we have a lot of privileges our female counterparts don’t have outside the United States. What gives? Let’s look at what happened particularly in America to create one of the many “mommy wars” we witness (and do not condone at MWM!) today.
Remember that the day a baby is born, so is her mother. Let’s explore moms’ options and elevate those who walk us into motherhood the way it can be done.

We meet the incredible Saadia Qureshi, The Keto Muslim Mom, today who jogs us down memory lane to discuss common new mommy issues: complicated diagnoses, health problems, pandemic pregnancy, body image, mompreneurship, and her personal journey to live a particular lifestyle that brings her joy. This is one that requires a mental seatbelt as only Zaiba can manage, and some chill which Uzma will never ever master, as you ride a roller coaster of new mommy experiences and memories.

Sadia Jalali is the founder of Muslim Bliss and Uzma’s college roommate, and back on this podcast to talk about why Muslims moms CHOOSE to go back to the nursery. On this episode of our New Mommy Memoirs series, we change it up by discussing life’s changes that sometimes necessitate having another child in the second (or third) phase of life.
She poses her zen approach to parenting and the epiphany that made her change her “never” to “maybe” to “okay” NINE years later. It’s worth thinking about for anyone who is on the fence and doesn’t want to say “what if” in a few years. Cheers to second chances and intentional pregnancies, as well as anyone who weathered a pandemic or single pregnancy! You’ll REALLY want to catch the very end of this episode for a fun gotcha moment.

Our good friend Shmila Javed is on today to share her new mommy memoirs in the context of a blended family. We are thankfully losing our hang-ups about Muslim nuclear families in America, thereby getting closer to the prophetic model of a happy, healthy household alhamdulillah. She surprises us and confirms a lot of what we imagine it must be like to start all over with diapers and breastfeeding. Alhamdulillah it was HER and not us!
We love our gf and the blast from the past. We hope you'll have as much fun at this reunion as we did!

After a tough month in March, we are ready to talk about BABIES! We’re taking a walk down memory lane with a mom who recently had one in the strangest year on record. Sofia Kamal received a “subhanAllah surprise” when her then youngest was 10 years old and she’d been “done.”
Her journey to motherhood was fraught with tests including PCOS and a challenging career as a lawyer, but even the tail end of that was a lesson in patience and gratitude. Take a listen and share this episode with someone who might not be clicking her heels when she reads two blue lines for a much needed audio shoulder squeeze and a vote of confidence. “You got this!”

Mom doc Sarah Syed tells us what it's like on the other side of the bed--when you're not the doctor, but the mom with a critically ill infant. Her story of duaa and dawa is not to be missed. She's not just Imani's mom. She's our shero so much so, that she inspired us to collaborate with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We found out this year that not only do they cure the sickest cancer patients, they aren't religiously affiliated and serve all patients regardless of race, religion, or the ability to pay.
This Ramadan, join Mommying While Muslim in support of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Cancer kills more children under the age of 14 than any other disease. Children undergoing treatment for cancer and other life-threatening diseases often need transfusions, physical and cognitive therapy. Your sadaqah can help St. Jude provide the best care and treatment for patients.
Plan to donate sadaqah to support the treatment of childhood cancer at our Virtual Iftaar for St. Jude this year on 4/18. If you can’t attend, then hit the link in the evite to donate your sadaqah generously.
