July 22, 2021The BachelorsIn today’s podcast I speak about why I don’t plan on ever studying a bachelor of psychology degree as I get asked quite often whether I will. We go through how we can apply what we’re learning to a real life situation today and then we can do a follow up tomorrow to see how it went. I talk through how I take a long term view with fixing my anxiety and then we finish with a 4-7-8 breathing activity which is a great quick activity that can calm you down!...more17minPlay
July 20, 2021The BenchIf you’re recovering from a mental health issue and finding it’s two steps forward and one step backwards then you might enjoy this story. I speak about the bench on the side of the road in the Perth CBD where I would sit in 2019 when I had panic attacks. There was one day in particular that stands out as my attack was really severe that day. I also answer a question about where my favourite place to live has been and then we finish with a neck stretch which is something that you can use at work if you’re anxious...more17minPlay
July 19, 2021The ArcadeDo you suffer from social anxiety? I used to as well. Trains, buses, shopping centres, they used to cause me so much anxiety. Lately I’ve been doing some filming for a webinar promo video in the arcades around Perth City and today I talk through the process I have used to feel comfortable in those situations. It’s a very simple process of reprogramming how we automatically react to things and I use it all the time. We finish with a quick body scan activity...more18minPlay
July 19, 2021The Audio IssuesWarning: Audio issues on this podcast! I wasn’t going to share this but 93% of my Instagram followers said that I should (I ran a poll). Other than the slight intermittent static sound overlaying the audio I really enjoyed this podcast! I talk about how I’ve started to notice all of the ways my life has improved from 2.5 years ago and this culminated in playing a full game of country football on the weekend. It was a local derby which happens to be the two towns I grew up in so it was very special to me to play. It also happened to be the oval that I first experience anxiety at in 1994. Returning for the first time, without chronic anxiety, was surreal for me! It’s a long way from the MCG or SCG where I used to play but it doesn’t matter - I felt amazing and had more energy than I’ve had on a football oval since 2002. The methods that I’ve put into practice to fix my anxiety are really paying dividends now and I’m starting to really feel like I’m back to my old self. We finish with a stomach breathing activity...more18minPlay
July 15, 2021The AutomationToday we go back to right where our anxiety starts, in the subconscious mind, and talk through how we can reprogram our reaction to situations so that we don’t get anxiety. I use the real world example of me going from not being able to publicly speak to being told 2 days ago that I’m professional enough at it to charge a substantial sum as a speaking fee. It was a huge moment in my life as a have truly now conquered one of my greatest fears. We finish with a breathing activity that you can do to calm down...more19minPlay
July 14, 2021The AnalogyToday I talk through an analogy that I use to explain what anxiety feels like for people that may not have an understanding of it. This is a handy analogy to know if you don’t have issues with anxiety as it may allow you to better support people that have it. We look at afferent v efferent data which is sent through our nervous system and how we can optimise this to calm ourselves down. I then answer a couple more questions including one about what moment was the turning point with my anxiety. We finish with a body scan...more19minPlay
July 13, 2021The AnswersWhy does where we pay attention determine how we react in situations? It’s all to do with the way our subconscious and conscious minds communicate. We look at how to use this to reprogram our reactions, building on yesterday’s talk and then I finally get to answering questions. We talk about the present moment being experienced through feelings and sensations and then we finish with a quick activity to get us out of our heads...more19minPlay
July 12, 2021The ManipulationHow do we change the filter that we view life through? How we do use it to change the way that we naturally react to situations so that we can have more control? Today we look at how important where we place our attention is in controlling anxiety and our reactions in life. I use a couple of very practical real world examples to show you how I have reprogrammed the way that I react to situations and it has helped with my anxiety. We finish we a great activity where we simply sit still and bring our awareness into the present moment...more19minPlay
July 11, 2021The MemoriesToday we look at all the memories we’ve created in our lives and how we automatically use those memories to create a filter, otherwise known as our attitude, which we see the world through. I talk about the neuroscience of feelings and sensations and how we experience things and then we finish the episode with a face scan activity which is a good activity to do before bed each night...more18minPlay
July 08, 2021The MisconceptionThe greatest misconception in life is that we will be happy when we get ‘……..’. Today I mix the lessons learned from Harvard Universities 80-year study on what makes us happy with Adam Smith’s famous ‘The Source’ quote. I want to make you think about how you’re living your life and whether your focus is on the right things. We finish with a breathing activity that we can use to stay calm throughout the day...more18minPlay
