Uber to seek permission to operate in Metro Vancouver

Uber has made it official - the ride-hailing giant is coming to British Columbia.  It has announced it will apply to the Passenger Transportation Board when applications open next Tuesday, to serve Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Squamish, and Lillooet.  However, the company says the specific communities where Uber will be available won't be finalized until closer to a launch date, based on the number of qualified drivers.

Ride-hailing is coming to Metro Vancouver - but as we know, not everyone is happy about that.  One UBC Professor has been researching and writing about the challenges of regulating the sharing economy. The City of Victoria is one of just two finalists to host the Invictus Games in 2022.  Victoria’s up against Dusseldorf in Germany to stage the event. And we’ll know the winner in November, when it’s announced in London, England.  The Games were founded by Prince Harry. The aim is to bring together members of the military who have been injured on duty.

Doug McCallum outlines why he doesn’t support ride-hailing in a letter to the Premier

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum has sent a letter to Premier John Horgan voicing his concerns about ride-hailing regulations announced by the Passenger Transportation Board last week.

McCallum says he does not support ride-hailing and the new regulations would allow ride-hailing companies the ability to pick up across boundaries, while the taxi industry must abide by municipal limits.

He says he's also not in favour of allowing unlimited fleet size for ride-hailing companies, warning it would negatively impact the environment and increase congestion.

Big tobacco comes out against vaping 

A patient in Illinois is the first to die of a mysterious lung illness linked to vaping, public health officials announced last Friday. The death occurred as doctors and hospitals in the United States report an increasing number of vaping-related respiratory illnesses this summer: 193 cases have now been reported in 22 states, including 22 cases in Illinois, officials said. Health Canada says it has no evidence of any similar illnesses related to vaping but it is monitoring the situation carefully.

In a surprising turn of events, big tobacco company Rothmans, Benson & Hedges has come out against vaping, particularly amongst teens.
