The insurance company is rolling out changes to the way it calculates premiums on September 1. The new model puts more weight on driver risk, with less-risky drivers paying less, and riskier drivers paying more.

It may prompt drivers to cancel their current policy so they can avail of the new rates. But there are costs to that, as James Beaulieu from AllWest Insurance Services explained to Mike Smyth on the Simi Sara Show today.

Chapter 3

Liberals continue spending frenzy on eve of election call: $2.8B last week

Federal Liberal ministers and MPs continued their cross-country spending announcement tour last week, making 330 spending commitments on everything from fixing up bus stops in London, Ont., to building new dressing rooms at a hockey rink in western P.E.I., to funding a youth exchange program to be run by Tides Canada.

Those 330 spending commitments made from Aug. 19 to Aug. 25 total $2.85 billion.

For the week before that — Aug. 11-18 — Liberal MPs and ministers made 595 spending commitments worth a total of $4.9 billion.

Under Canada’s fixed-date elections law, the earliest Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could call this fall’s election would be Sept. 1 and the latest would be Sept. 15. Once he calls the election, all those spending announcements would stop.

Johnson & Johnson fined $572M in Oklahoma court ruling

David Eby, BC's attorney general, says he's pleased with a court ruling in Oklahoma that found Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries helped fuel the state's opioid crisis, and ordered the company to pay $572 million.

The province of BC filed a proposed class-action lawsuit a year ago against dozens of pharmaceutical companies, in a bid to recoup the health-care costs associated with opioid addiction, and the Ontario government has said it plans to join the case.

Eby says the goal of BC's lawsuit is like the one in Oklahoma. He says it aims to hold pharmaceutical companies similarly accountable for the harm they've done and for the financial burdens they've placed on the health care system.
