  • Loonie Loops - With Mark McColgan #128
Tonight we welcome a friend back on our podcast. Mark McColgan is in the saddle once again and we start off chatting about what Mark has been doing lately. The answer of course is being very busy with his running while promoting Saint john trail Running and getting the message out there for all trail running. Mark is very passionate about organizing races and getting all the information about a run out to the masses and he is very good at it. Our main focus this evening is on the new race coming August 26th, 2023 called Loonie Loops, links below. This brand new race in Saint john is getting a lot of attention and for good reason. You can sign up for 6, 12, or 24 hours and 10$ of every donation goes to the YMCA, why not I say? You can take as long as you like on the 3km trail loop. Walk, jog, hike, and nap in between, it doesn't matter. Why not test your limits and hike the farthest you have ever hiked or see how many laps you could complete in 6 hours, the sky is the limit. So sign up and give it a go, links are below cheers!

  • Dutch Viking Events - With Jos Eijkelestam #127
Tonight our very special guest is someone that loves contributing to the trail running community by putting on events to keep people motivated and fit. Jos Eijkelestam is originally from the Netherlands, go team orange crush, and has lived in the Fredericton area for many years. After speaking with Jos for a few minutes, his passion becomes infectious and you want to jump up and join one of his events. With incredible names such as The Dark 50, The Wonderfully Wicked Woolastook Whopping, or Odell Obliteration, Jos never stops thinking and is always reinventing. Now Jos is placing all his events under one name, Dutch Viking Events. Listen to this episode and see all that Jos and his wife do for the community. We think you may have been in a few of his events and didn't even notice. It's people like Jos and his wife that keep the community strong. Stay safe everyone.

  • Mother runner - With Sarah Badger #126
Tonight our very special guest is Sarah Badger, I met her while in Saint John last year running the Bootstrap Boogie and we just had to have her on our show. Sarah loves to run anywhere she can lace up a pair of sneakers and hit the trail or road. In this episode, we discuss mental health in general and how Sarah deals with her own issues. Sarah tells it like it is and how running helps to keep her balanced. It is refreshing to learn that we are all human and sometimes we have problems. Sarah is affectionately known as the caboose for the Saint john Trail Runners, she loves to volunteer her time and make others feel welcome when they have group runs or events. You may want to sit down and listen to Sarah and her journey and listen to her passion, We know when Sarah is ready she will kick butt at her next Ultra and we can't wait to have her back on when she does.

  • Shannon's cup of tea is cider - With Shannon and Marc Melanson #125
Apologies for my poor voice on this episode, I was fighting a bit of a cold at the time but the show must go on. We welcome Shannon and Marc Melanson back to our show this evening, two very special people who are always motivated to keep moving. Both love to ride their bikes, run, hike, and keep active. They enjoy going to Disney and running in costume as a couple, and we learn how they chose the characters to run. How difficult it was to make the costumes and what the entire Disney experience is all about.
We move into the next part of our conversation, the Cabot Trail Relay Race. This happened recently and we learn all about this wonderful event. 276 km and 17 stages over tough mountains in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, through many small communities around the famous Cabot Trail. This sounds breathtaking and scary at the same time, just imagine yourself doing a leg that starts in the dark but ends with the sunrise after running up a large mountain. We hear Shannon and Marc's experience with this race and some of the rules that help keep the runners safe, very important. A fantastic conversation with two wonderful guests and I can almost see myself in Cape Breton running this event, perhaps you will as well.

  • There are surprises on race day - With Troy Johnston #124
Troy Johnston is this week's guest and we are very pleased to bring him to our listeners for those who may not know him. What is it that Troy does? If you have done any adventure racing in the area, there is a good chance it was one of Troy's events. Try founded Natural Selection Adventure Racing back in 2007 so people could play in the woods. Seeing a void for this type of activity Troy took the torch and ran with it. Troy sets many different types of events, everything from family-oriented to extreme hard-core, there is something for everyone. You could find yourself on a beaver dam looking for a control or possibly be rock climbing or on a trail, it's all possible. Don't know how to read a map and compass? don't worry, they have events to help people learn these skills. Troy asks us to think about going to one of his events, maybe we should and maybe you should too.

Natural Selection Adventure Racing website, you have to go check this out because it looks and sounds like a ton of fun:

  • I get stressed out on Strava - With Garth Millar #123
Garth Millar is tonight's very special guest and as many of you know Garth and his wife Helena organize a ton of running events in the area. Shoppers run for women right here in Moncton, the recent run at the Hopewell Rocks Multi-terrain Race, and our very own Legs for Literacy. We talk about many more in this episode, and you hear some of the incredible stories Garth tells us about setting these runs up. It's one heck of an episode and Garth is a fantastic storyteller. We also chat about how Garth got started running and a very surprising fact was that Garth never really had a plan but always figured things out. A wonderful episode and we think after listening you may very well want to sign up for an event soon. Take a few minutes out of your busy day and unwind a little and listen to what Garth has to say, you will be glad you did.

  • Disc golf and why you should be playing - With Luc and Antoni Richard #122
Covid seriously changed people's habits, especially exercise and sports. Luc and his son Antoni discovered Disc golf because of Covid, they liked it but it was placed on the back shelf for a time. Luc convinced his son to go and give it another shot, Antoni really disliked Disc golf at first but then everything changed. Now, Antoni has a great deal of upside in this sport, being sponsored and helped along, there is no telling where this 17-year-old could end up. The sky is the limit and Antoni seems poised for a big breakout. His father Luc is more on the organizing side of things, setting up events and helping raise awareness for Disc golf. It is nice to hear about a sport that thrived during Covid and how the numbers are really starting to take off. In this episode, Diane talks about a special signed disc giveaway, very cool. So if you are hoping to win a free custom-designed disc go to our Facebook page and check out the contest. A fantastic way to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air plus get some exercise all at the same time.

  • Taking the Zion event by storm part2 - With Tim McDonough, Drew Wallace, Dawson Mossman, Brian Demmings, Mike Ferguson, and Brian Head #120b
Trail running is very popular these days and Ultra trail running and challenging oneself is even more popular. When Tim McDonough contacted us and wanted to set up a podcast episode or as I like to call it these days " Podclass", I knew this was going to be a good one. We learn a lot from these six gentlemen; in part 2 we pick up where we left off. We learn more about what makes Ultra trail running such an unforgettable experience. Everyone has different reasons for doing these but the satisfaction of finishing is simply the best. So much information packed into this episode we believe you will love listening to and may even want to try your first trail run or race. There are tons of events in the Maritimes this year, why not look one up, maybe one we discuss near the end, and try it out? Nature and a challenge, why not.
