Mountain Murders

Leroy Willis "Sprout" Young was a career criminal who loved hillbilly songs. His favorite was "Rattlesnake Daddy" which he often sang around bars and roadhouses in Knoxville, Tennessee-even claiming he'd written the song. Sprout was also a ladies man. When 17 year old Joanna Huffstetler met up with Sprout at a dance hall in town, she let the Rattlesnake Daddy give her a ride home. However, Joanna's body is discovered in a debris pile in an area known as Stinky Point. It doesn't take long for police to connect the dots with Sprout as their prime suspect. Join us for a tale of murder and mayhem in Knoxville.

A true mountain murder! This case inspired a local murder ballad in our county. This week Mountain Murders will be discussing Billy Mansfield Jr, a serial killer and rapist, who murdered at least five women and girls in the late 1970s and early 1980s. When he arrested for the murder of a California woman named Rene Saling, a tip lead investigators in Florida to unearth more bodies buried on his family's 5 acre compound. A true examination of nature vs. nurture, Billy's father was also a terrible criminal convicted of numerous child sex crimes. How much of Billy's behavior was patterned after his father? Was he just born bad?
