In 2001, a college student named Clara Schwartz is consumed with online role playing games going as far as creating her own called Underworld. Calling herself Lord of Chaos, Clara creates a scenario where her father Dr. Robert Schwartz, a renowned DNA scientist, is the enemy. Blurring the lines between reality and fiction, Clara meets a troubled young man named Kyle Hulbert.

18 year old Kyle was emancipated from state custody where he'd spent his youth in and out of foster homes and psychiatric facilities. Kyle, a self proclaimed "vampire" was also heavy into role playing. His friendship with Clara seems perfect--until she starts manipulating Kyle through Underworld. The game ends with deadly consequences.

Join Mountain Murders on this twisted journey between fantasy and reality as we take a look at Clara Schwartz and her gang of outcast friends.

We decided last minute to drop an Offbeat from a previous Patreon episode on serial killer Samuel Smithers. Smithers was also nicknamed "The Demon Deacon" because he was an active member of his church.

Smithers lived an unexceptional life but became an arsonist and then a serial killer when he moved from Tennessee to Florida.

Atlanta's Butcher also known as the Atlanta Ripper or the Black Butcher is an unknown serial killer who terrorized early 20th century Atlanta, Georgia murdering young black and biracial women.

The killer slaughtered at least 20 women maybe as many as 35. His methods mimicked Jack the Ripper who had struck London in 1888. Though Atlanta was recovering from the Atlanta Race Riots of 1906, racism was prevelant in the Jim Crow south stifling investigations.

Join Mountain Murders as we chronicle the murders, investigation and theories surrounding these hideous murders.

Greetings! This week's Offbeat will dive into Appalachian holiday traditions. Some may be long forgotten but others continue to thrive in our modern world.
The holidays provided mountain folks with opportunities to celebrate for up to a week with an Old Time Christmas! Fruitcakes and other sweet treats were baked. Often moonshine and shooting was a part of the celebration.
