  • Mumbrellacast: All about Nine in 2020, ARN re-signs Kyle and Jackie O, and Foxtel undergoes another restructure
This week was all about Nine. Powered’s Liana Dubois and program director Hamish Turner joined editor Vivienne Kelly in the Mumbrellacast studio to chat about what’s to come for Nine in 2020. They discussed the consistency of Nine’s 2020 programming slate, how its broadcast video-on-demand service, 9Now, will come up against the streaming giants, and if the network will change its tune and sing the praises of the ‘Total People’ ratings if they win 2019.
In news chat, the Mumbrella team also debrief on on the (literal) rollercoaster of the Nine upfronts, including the champagne-bearing wedding dress and the speakeasy that wasn’t really a speakeasy.
In other big news this week, ARN re-signed some of its biggest talent, including Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson on an “absurd” amount of money. The duo is set to receive what is speculated as $39,000 per episode of their breakfast program on Sydney’s Kiis FM, and will be on air until at least 2024. Amanda Keller and Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones have signed on to WSFM until 2022 and after building a competitive 9.5% audience share in Melbourne, Christian O’Connell has also re-signed to Gold FM in Melbourne. The team speculated when we will hear about the rest of the network’s talent, and chatted about what the recent downturn in ad revenue for radio means for the industry.
And once again, Foxtel has restructured its marketing and sales departments. This time it’s due to the merger between Foxtel and Fox Sports – a process which began in 2017. It’s been a tough year for Foxtel’s marketing staff, but the team considers if this will be the first step on the road to recovery.

  • Mumbrellacast: Ten in 2020, big CMO moves, ‘Wang Watch’, and we sit down with Bachelorette Angie Kent
In this week’s Mumbrellacast, editor Vivienne Kelly sits down with this year’s Bachelorette Angie Kent to chat about the transition from Goggleboxer to reality TV mainstay. They also discuss leveraging TV appearances into media careers, whether the Goggleboxers have become too media trained, and if she cares about The Bachelorette’s ratings.
In the news chat, the team also pulls apart Ten’s 2020 upfronts, including the play for diversity with new Masterchef hosts Jock Zonfrillo, Melissa Leong and Andy Allen, the two upcoming seasons of Survivor, and its refreshed ad buying platform, Buy 10.
On the other end of the reality TV spectrum, Seven’s prime-time offering, Bride and Prejudice, is on the decline, bringing in metro ratings in the 300,000s. But, with a new CMO, Charlotte Valente, and the network’s upfronts around the corner, the team is keen to see what Seven will roll out for next year.
It was also a week of colourful journalism: The Daily Telegraph sent a journalist in a bee costume to the Extinction Rebellion protests and NW Magazine brought back the sealed section ‘Wang Watch’. The team discusses whether Wang Watch, which features compromising images of Prince Philip and celebrity chef Pete Evans, breaches the Press Council’s principle protecting people’s ‘reasonable expectations of privacy’. However, according to a statement provided to ‘chief wang reporter’ Vivienne Kelly, Evans was fine with it.

  • Mumbrellacast: What is going on at Seven? Jens Monsees starts at WPP AUNZ, radio ratings and hope for the ad market
It’s been a big week for Seven. The Mumbrellacast team sits down to discuss the ins and outs of the recently announced restructure which will see reporting lines in to CEO James Warburton narrowed down to eight people. The network also axed current affairs program Sunday Night, and there are rumours that Big Brother will be taking its place.
WPP AUNZ’s new CEO, Jens Monsees started on Tuesday, and in case you don’t already know he has a big job ahead of him – from a slow economy, court cases, structural legacy issues and key staff departing its agencies. The team discuss what could have motivated WPP AUNZ to bring on a German, client-side marketer to lead Australia’s biggest agency holding group, and how far he needs to go to get it all back on track.
This week also saw the sixth GfK radio ratings survey of the year released which revealed that *those* comments about New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern did not deter Sydney listeners from tuning in to Alan Jones. Not that this really shocked anyone on the Mumbrellacast team. In Melbourne, Christian O’Connell helped Gold 104.3 top the Melbourne market whilst creeping up behind Fifi, Fev And Byron’s top spot in breakfast on a 9.6% share. Also, senior media reporter Hannah Blackiston gives a shout out to Perth radio, which she is “starting to really care about”.
Finally, SMI data is giving adland hope that media spend will recover in October, and continue to rise into 2020. Insurance and travel are proving to be bright spots for the industry, showing growth in its advertising year-on-year. However, as Hannah points out, 2020 will be benchmarked against 2019, which has been weak in its entirety following 12 consecutive months of decline – so is an improvement really anything to get excited about?

  • Mumbrellacast: Why can’t we all just get along with Facebook? Plus Foxtel Media, The Masked Singer and Old Mate
On this week’s Mumbrellacast, we ponder: Can we all just get along with Facebook? The discussion comes off the back of Lizzie Young from Nine  questioning if investment into Facebook exclusive content deal was worth it. It’s been a dicey time for publishers and platforms, following the ACCC’s report into digital platforms. Senior media reporter, Hannah Blackiston, reviews other publishers’ thoughts on their Facebook content, and the team discusses if there really is a place for it in the future.
Also up for debate and reflection, Thinkerbell co-founder Adam Ferrier said that agencies and marketers are putting too much focus onto consumer insights. The team discusses when and where there is a place for consumer research-driven advertising versus thought-provoking branding.
It is a big week for TV with Ten’s launch of The Masked Singer exceeding expectations. The Mumbrellacast team think they have matched celebrities to all of the characters, but for want of not giving away spoilers they instead talk about Lindsay Lohan – and if she really knows who anyone is? Seven is broadcasting the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, but it remains up in the air if Sydney will tune in for the GWS Giants’ first premiership campaign. And of course, Gruen was back on our screens for its 11th season, with the industry’s familiar faces, and a couple of sound issues for some viewers.
Finally, the South Australian Tourism Commission’s ‘Old Mate’ is back, and this time he has brought some friends to Adelaide with him. The team debates if the latest phase of the campaign was pre-planned, or a masterstroke of last-minute marketing to make up for public backlash.
And, Hannah Blackiston sat down with Foxtel Media’s chief sales officer David Roddick and advanced advertising director Nev Hasan about the recent rebrand from MCN, the impact of streaming and Kayo on Foxtel’s future, and the 12-second ‘Q Breaks’.

  • Mumbrellacast: Kurt Burnette on Seven’s future, plus 600 complaints for a Libra ad, and Sam Armytage vs the tabloids
This week, industry watchdog Ad Standards dismissed over 600 complaints about Libra’s #bloodnormal campaign. The complaints accused the campaign of being ‘offensive’, ‘degrading’, ‘confronting’ and ‘explicit’. The team ponders whether the ad was as confronting as some consumers made it out to be, or whether viewers remembered it as more graphic than it was. Content Director Tim Burrowes also goes down a tangent about Quentin Tarantino films. It’s more related to the story than you’d think.
Samantha Armytage came out swinging this week, calling for a boycott from The Daily Mail and Woman’s Day, and tweeting “There’s a special place in hell” for the employees of magazine. The story gets even juicier as it was pointed out on social media that Sam’s initial statement included News Corp’s The Sunday Telegraph – which she writes for – and conveniently excluded Seven West Media titles. Yikes.
In an explosion of acronyms ADMA, and its various-lettered assets, were acquired by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). The team ponders what it means when an industry body buys an industry body?
Plus, editor Vivienne Kelly sits down with Seven’s chief revenue officer, Kurt Burnette, to talk about the extensive plans the network has for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The 52-week plan will not only cover the games and Paralympics, but will also feed into the network’s reality slate as well. Burnette also reveals what it’s like working for new CEO James Warburton and how the network plans to bounce back next year.
