  • Mumbrellacast: Foxtel revolutionises yet again, the industry reflects on R U OK? Day, plus Shutterstock’s Lou Weiss
This week, Foxtel announced three more ‘revolutionary’ changes, including Multi-Channel Network’s rebrand to Foxtel Media, four new Fox-branded channels and shorter ad breaks. Editor Vivienne Kelly and senior media report Hannah Blackiston sit down to chat about “the world’s most enthusiastic CEO”, Foxtel’s Patrick Delany’s, presentation on how these changes will take the subscription TV provider into its next stage of life.
Ten’s Pilot Week went to air, and Roxy Jacenko’s I Am Roxy came out on top with 399,000 metro viewers. It was the highest rating pilot for 2019, and also narrowly missed 2018’s Pilot Week episode of Kinney Tonight which received 404,000. The team discusses if Ten’s Pilot Week really lives up the grandeur of the US television networks’ version, and how many of this year’s shows will make it across the line.
This episode of the Mumbrellacast was recorded on R U OK? Day, and the team reflects on the meaning of this day for an industry in which mental health issues are particularly prevalent. The Australian Radio Network’s broadcasters took 10 seconds of silence on the hour, every hour, and The Works teamed up with the movement to create a Google voice action to help people navigate tough conversations. But how can the industry do more to improve the mental health of its members? How can we move beyond lip service to actual outcomes?
Plus, at Mumbrella’s B2B Marketing Summit last week, Vivienne Kelly sat down with Shutterstock’s chief marketing officer Lou Weiss to talk about how the company found it had over 200 clips of swimming pigs when it created its infamous Fyre Festival campaign. Weiss also discussed the biggest challenges facing marketers, how story telling is key to each and every brand, and why he can not manage to get his own photos into Shutterstock’s library.

  • Mumbrellacast special: Roxy Jacenko on mental health, industry envy, and her TV pilot
On this special episode of the Mumbrellacast, editor Vivienne Kelly sits down with Roxy Jacenko, ahead of the premiere of I Am Roxy during Ten’s Pilot Week.
During the unfiltered chat, Jacenko talks about ignoring the traditional public relations model, upsetting her competitors, and how she feels about the criticism she attracts from the media and marketing industry at large. She also addresses mental health in the industry, including her notoriously hard-working staff, involvement in the Perfectly Imperfect campaign, and why she hates it when people “play the mental health card”.
And of course, they chat about I Am Roxy: whether she will watch it, if anything was off limits, and how she wants everything she does to succeed beyond anyone’s expectations.

  • Mumbrellacast: TV Blackbox’s Rob McKnight on why Rove flopped, getting sacked and the real story behind Studio 10’s Brussels sprout incident
This week on the Mumbrellacast, TV Blackbox editor and former Studio 10 executive producer, Rob McKnight joined the team to discuss the best and worst of the morning program. He discussed Studio 10’s 1000th episode, Brussels sprout-gate, the time he “almost killed” Ita Buttrose, and his sacking from the network.
Also in TV, Saturday Night Rove was axed after only two episodes and went out with 138,000 metro viewers. The team asks Rob McKnight where it all went wrong. His response to this alone is worth tuning in for.
Seven announced its first commission under new CEO James Warburton, dog grooming competition Pooch Perfect, fronted by Australian actress Rebel Wilson. The show is already carrying a lot of weight on its shoulders, including whether or not it will turn the prime-time ratings ship around for the network.
Plus, fallout from Nine’s fundraiser for Liberal Party was revealed this week, the end of CEO Hugh Mark’s golden run in the media industry. So how independent are the former-Fairfax mastheads, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review, from their new owners? Or were the breaking stories from these papers a smart PR move?
Finally from adland, 13Cabs launched a campaign from Thinkerbell, positioning it as the official travel partner of booty calls. McKnight and Mumbrella’s editor Vivienne Kelly debate its use of stereotypes, and whether or not the ads are funny.

  • Mumbrellacast: Rove is back (for now), CommBank’s weak Alan Jones stance, radio ratings highlights and CHE Proximity on Curing Homesickness
In this week’s Mumbrellacast, Alan Jones makes a return appearance: Should CommBank be applauded for taking a stand, or are they even taking a stand at all? Pill Testing Australia has certainly taken a stand in its latest emotional campaign, putting a human face to the pill testing debate; the team talks about the ad’s impact and why it should be shown on more screens.
It’s also another radio ratings week, with survey five bringing some interesting results in Sydney, thanks to the ABC overtaking the juggernaut Kyle and Jackie O show, and 2Day FM’s breakfast offering bowing out on 2.4% share, along with a couple of surprises in Melbourne and Perth.
Rove McManus has spent some time on radio, but is back on TV, with Saturday Night Rove premiering to just 244,000 metro viewers. Is there really an audience seeking a local comedy format on a weekend night in, like Rove claims there is, when more people tuned in to watch Mrs Doubtfire?
And we cross to Mumbrella’s Health Marketing Summit to hear CHE Proximity’s chief creative officer Ant White and chief strategy officer David Halter speak about the Curing Homesickness campaign, including how Coles’ Mum’s Sause is going after two years of planning.

  • Mumbrellacast: Alan Jones vs advertisers, Kellogg’s finally finds media, plus The Guardian visits the studio
This week, a host of brands announced that they would be withdrawing their advertising from 2GB’s breakfast program with Alan Jones, after he made comments on air the previous week about New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. The team sat down to discuss if the advertisers were really gone for good, and if Jones would actually get axed in the inevitable reoccurrence of this event – like 2GB has threatened.
Also this week, after five days in the job, new Seven CEO James Warburton fronted up to investors and the media to discuss the $444.4m loss the broadcaster posted. The 2020 Olympics are on the horizon, but how will Warburton steer the Seven ship into a more profitable direction?
Also arising this week, Kellogg’s finally appointed Zenith as its media agency after a pitch process shrouded in controversy. After being called out by Mat Baxter on stage at Mumbrella360, and publicly rejected by agency bosses, Kellogg’s has taken a hit to its reputation and Zenith, too, is paying the price.
Plus, The Guardian Australia’s managing director Dan Stinton, and editor Lenore Taylor, visited the Mumbrellacast studio to chat to Brittney Rigby and Hannah Blackiston about how they are making an impact on the Australian media landscape. Stinton and Taylor discussed what it actually means to be a progressive platform, The Guardian’s reader donation model, the fall out of the ACCC report and whether they will ever sign a content deal with Facebook.
