  • Mumbrellacast: Gary Vee in the studio, plus 2Day FM axes breakfast, and Karl Stefanovic returns to TV
This week Tim Burrowes sits down with Gary Vaynerchuk – AKA Gary Vee – to talk about the rise of his media and marketing empire. They discuss whether Gary would ever debate Mark Ritson on the principles of modern marketing, the industry perceptions of Vayner Media, and what would happen if he died tomorrow?
Plus, news broke that 2Day FM was axing its breakfast program, six formats and 13 hosts after Kyle and Jackie O moved to Kiis FM. Hosts Ed Kavalee and Ash London still have comfortable spots in the network lineup, but the team debates if we will hear Grant Denyer on its airwaves ever again? The station is set to play music from 6 to 9am, but what is the real story behind the scenes and will the network take up editor Vivienne Kelly’s offer to just use her Spotify playlist?
Karl Stefanovic returned to Nine’s screens with This Time Next Year, which didn’t land as well as it did this time, two years ago. Is Karl’s personal brand too far gone for modern ratings? The team also discusses whether Australian audiences are actually crying out for more diverse faces on commercial screens.
And finally, what next for Here, There and Everywhere, and why do publishers and TV networks keep going back to Facebook like an ex-partner they simply can’t get enough of?

  • Mumbrellacast: Nick Garrett departs Clems, Seachange returns to screens and IAG’s Brent Smart

Easily the biggest news this week was the departure of Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and Sydney CEO Nick Garrett from the business after nine years with the BBDO network. Tim Burrowes shares his thoughts on the impact of the news on the future of the two agencies, and what might be next for the adland giant.

SeaChange made a triumphant and nostalgic return on Nine, becoming the highest rated drama of 2019. The team asks what other iconic Australian dramas could be revived to fight back against the dominance of reality TV. Adding in the launch of the 15th season of The Block has Nine sitting pretty moving into the second half of the TV year.

Revenue is down across TV and radio, and, following the end of financial year, media owners are just starting to release their reports. The team asks: When will ‘a couple of poor quarters’ become ‘the state of the industry’?

And Brent Smart pops into the studio to chat about his return from the US and the switch to client-side at IAG. He speaks with editor Vivienne Kelly about the evolution of creative work, how Australian advertising stacks up on the global stage and making insurance sexy.

    • Mumbrellacast: Triple J’s Ben and Liam on their best and worst radio, plus the ACCC and PwC reports
This week on the Mumbrellacast, Hannah Blackiston sits down with Triple J breakfast hosts Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton to talk about their worst ever interview out at Mount Isa with a certain prolific Queensland Senator, and Breakfast on Breakfast – the best segment they have ever done. The pair also discussed their comparison to Hamish and Andy, and how much they really care about the radio ratings, if at all.
It was also a week of industry reports. PwC released its My Screen report, which was commissioned by Facebook, that looked into how Australians are currently consuming video content. The report was quickly pulled from circulation and the situation turned into a case of ‘He said, she said’ between its author, measurement companies, Facebook, PwC, and the TV networks. The Mumbrella team sits down to debrief on the situation and question whether an updated version can ever be taken seriously.
The ACCC dropped its final report from the Digital Platforms Inquiry. The team chats about the impact the ACCC’s recommendations will have on digital giants Facebook and Google, and the suggestion of an inquiry into media agencies.

    • Mumbrellacast: George Calombaris and the whole damn thing, plus Mark Humphries on what went wrong with Pointless

It was a big week in TV and the Mumbrella team takes time out during the Finance Marketing Summit to talk it all through. George Calombaris was caught out yet again for underpaying his staff. Ten decided to stand by him, but then he, Gary Mehigan and Matt Preston decided not to stand by Ten without a pay rise. The team discusses the irony of the situation and if Masterchef is about to become the new Top Gear.

Plus, Hannah Blackiston sits down with former Pointless host Mark Humphries to discuss what went wrong with Ten’s version of the beloved British game show, what will work in the 6pm slot instead, and how his “whole business model is replacing Grant Denyer”.

Also in this week’s Mumbrellacast, Seven is a year out from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and the team explained how the network plans on tackling the behemoth of sports broadcasting and the massive channel shares it is expecting.

And Foxtel announced it is ‘revolutionising’ the way people will watch TV, but will is actually make a difference? Is it a revolution? Tune in to find out!

      • Mumbrellacast: Coles’ Little Shop returns, Instagram hides your likes, and SCA’s Brian Gallagher on Boomtown
Coles’ Little Shop collectables campaign is back this year, bringing with it its single-use plastic, disposable packaging, trading frenzy and massive profits. Under the leadership of new CMO Lisa Ronson, the team asks if Coles was right to bring back the successful yet controversial campaign, or if they would have been crazy not to?
It was also a big week for social media giants: Facebook was fined $US5 billion for the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Twitter reinvented its online platform, and Instagram launched its no likes test in Australia. Are social media platforms leading the change in their users’ behaviour, or are they trying to adapt to stay relevant?
And the biggest question encountered – really, it was in all-caps – was ‘WHEN WILL FACEBOOK FINALLY BE HURT BY PRIVACY SCANDALS, OMG?’
Foxtel, MCN and Kayo have experienced a lot of change in amongst their marketers. The team discusses whether it is a reflection on the current state of the Foxtel business, or if new hires Toby Dewar from Westpac and ex-Adshel David Roddick represent its ambition to innovate.
Plus, Hannah Blackiston was joined by Southern Cross Austereo’s chief of sales officer Brian Gallagher, who spoke about shining a light onto regional media with the Boomtown initiative, whether talent can ever leave quietly, and his take on the radio ratings.
