  • Weaker US dollar and equities as markets take stock
    Tuesday 9th April 2019
It’s been a quiet 24 hours that has seen stocks lose some of their gains of last week but, as NAB’s Gavin Friend explains, that doesn’t signify a loss in confidence, evidenced by rising benchmark treasury yields. The only spanner I the works is the continued rise in oil prices, not helped by the air strike at Tripoli airport and fears that all Libyan oil supplies could go offline. Gavin also talks to Morning Call host Phil Dobbie about the latest on Brexit – where no deal has been struck with Labour just as Theresa May sets off to Europe to negotiate an extension. Plus, yesterday’s Aussie job ads data and what to expect on home loan numbers today.

  • Goldilocks and the Magic Money Tree
    Monday 8th April 2019
The non-farm payrolls data on Friday seemed to indicate a Goldilocks economy – more jobs and with wages contained. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s David de Garis whether things are really that rosy? Clearly the President doesn’t think so, calling for a return to QE – the Magic Money Tree that will help the economy prosper. Sadly, Brexit will dominate the news in the week ahead, with the UK supposedly leaving on Friday, unless another extension is negotiated mid-week. That depends on whether Theresa May can secure a way forward with the opposition leader. Plus, is a trade deal with China close? And could the Coalition win the Aussie election, whenever it is?

  • Waiting on the payroll
    Friday 5th April 2019
US payrolls data is out this evening (Australia time) and, unless something else is brewing, markets tend to tread water in anticipation. As NAB’s Ray Attrill explains, today is no exception, although if positive vibes on a US-China trade deal turn into a date for a signing ceremony, that could all change. And on the continuing Brexit circus, Phil Dobbie asks Ray is there’s a danger that the UK could fall out of the EU with no deal, almost by accident. Plus, weak data from Germany, but positive news from Canada, who also have employment data out this evening.

  • A trio of optimism
    Thursday 4th April 2019
There are three bits of news driving optimism in the markets. So says NAB’s Tapas Strickland, talking to Phil Dobbie in today’s edition of The Morning Call. First, better than expected services PMIs for the Eurozone and China add to the hope that the worst of the market downturn is over. Secondly, the bilateral Brexit talks between Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn add to the hope of a softer Brexit. And an FT article suggests the US China trade deal is making strong progress. We’ve had our own good news in Australia too, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
