  • A trio of optimism
    Thursday 4th April 2019
There are three bits of news driving optimism in the markets. So says NAB’s Tapas Strickland, talking to Phil Dobbie in today’s edition of The Morning Call. First, better than expected services PMIs for the Eurozone and China add to the hope that the worst of the market downturn is over. Secondly, the bilateral Brexit talks between Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn add to the hope of a softer Brexit. And an FT article suggests the US China trade deal is making strong progress. We’ve had our own good news in Australia too, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

  • Markets calmer, Aussie takes a hit, Theresa reaches out
    Wednesday 3rd April 2019
The markets are a lot calmer this morning after yesterday's rally in shares and sell-off of bonds. But, as Phil Dobbie discusses with NAB’s Rodrigo Catril, the Kiwi and Aussie dollars have taken the biggest hit out of the major currencies, as business sentiment slides and, in Australia’s case, the concern about the impact of house prices heightens. Canada faces a similar story, which is why the Canadian dollar is down today, despite rising oil prices. And Theresa May has talked about a unity approach to solving Brexit – jointly arriving at a solution with the leader of the opposition. There’s also discussion on yesterday’s RBA meeting, the budget and what to look out for today.

  • Has the global slowdown bottomed out? Already?
    Tuesday 2nd April 2019
There was continued optimism in the markets overnight with more strong data reads from China and the US. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s Tapas Strickland whether this means the worst of the downturn is over when the two nations at the centre of the trade dispute seem to be getting along alright despite it? Other export nations are faring a little worse, though, notably Japan and Germany. So what stance will the RBA take today and what surprises (if any) are in store in the Aussie budget. Plus, expect more turbulence in the pound as MPs have another round of indicative votes and the threat of a serious cabinet split for Theresa May.

  • China data brings fresh hope
    Monday 1st April 2019
China’s PMI numbers over the weekend were better than expected. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s David de Garis whether this assumes a strong, risk-on mood for the first week of a new quarter? On the downside, US data remains mixed and the yield curve is still inverted. Does it all still rest on the outcome of US China trade talks. And what of the Aussie economy, with the NAB Business Survey out this morning, ahead of tomorrow’s RBA meeting? Plus, Brexit – the saga continues, with more votes and no clear direction.
