  • Handbrake on car tariffs; Facebook lands facedown
    Friday 27th July 2018
Equity markets got a boost from the news that Trump and Juncker have reached an agreement to halt further tariffs but, as Phil Dobbie discusses with NAB’s tapas Strickland, tech stocks took a dent from the sharp fall Facebook’s earning results. The ECB offered nothing new to the market overnight, yet it seemed to impact the Euro nonetheless. And Michel Barnier confirmed there’s a lot in Theresa May’s white paper that will not be acceptable to the EU, leaving open the question about where Brexit is heading.

  • Friends again? Or playing one against the other?
    Thursday 26th July 2018
The President seems to be approaching the trade talks with Mr Juncker in a positive light, whilst tweeting further thinly veiled threats against China. Early reports indicate Europe has gioven some ground. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s David de Garis whether its just another Trump tactic – playing one trade foe against another? Whatever, shares continue to rise, but for how long? And what’s happening to Australian inflation – a temporary falter or the start of a softening trend? They also look ahead to tonight’s statement from the ECB – will they give more clarity on their timetable for lifting rates?

  • Trump and China prepare for the long game
    Wednesday 25th July 2018
The President is, once again, using twitter to position himself for the tough trade talk with the EC’s President Juncker. He tweeted that he loves tariffs because it brings countries to the negotiating table. Phil Dobbie talks to NAB’s Rodrigo Catril, who says there are clear signs that oth the US sand China are preparing for a long game in the tariff war. China’s burst of confidence, irrespective of the trade threats, is helping the Aussie dollar, but will it continue if the uncertainty continues? And they look ahead to today’s CPI figures and what it could mean for the RBA policy decisions.

  • A weakening Renminbi, rising bond yields and tweets in BLOCK CAPS
    Tuesday 24th July 2018
President Trump has relatively little influence on the markets today. His tweet in block caps, threatening Iran, pushed oil higher for a while, but it fell sharply as the markets remembered its more rhetoric than substance. In fact, as NAB’s Tapas Strickland explains to Phil Dobbie, it was the Bank of Japan’s changing approach to yield control and China’s policy to protect the economy that had the most impact on markets today. That could all change, of course, as the President meets with Mr Juncker tomorrow.
