The 2004 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series season was one of the most interesting seasons in NASCAR history. 2004 was the first year of the NASCAR's first ever venture into the playoffs, sending NASCAR into a new era. But there was so much more to that season than just creating a playoff format. 2004 would also see the end of Winston as the title sponsor of the Cup Series, that would usher in Nextel.
2004 also saw the Southern 500 move to November, Labor Day weekend racing move to Southern California, and the final race at Rockingham.
In Episode 1 of NASCAR Live Presents: 2004: Chasing History we'll chronicle several of the major changes made following the 2003 season and remember one of the Daytona 500's greatest triumphs.
