@nonperishablegoods podcast episode #36
One of the recently coined trends credited to the internet is "cancel culture". It's where someone or entity does or says something that a very vocal group doesn't like, and they are basically judged and deemed "cancelled". That action is discussed with rage via twitter fingers in the court of public opinion aka social media platforms. This episode ended up in a few different places but we started off with discussing being cancelled by people. Then, we ended on possibly being cancelled by earth, which put everything in perspective for us. Just keep in mind we all make mistakes. No one is perfect. Practice forgiveness daily.

"Men's Insecurities On Public Display"
Recently, as I've been zooming through social media, the video content men have been posting is disturbing to me. I had to bring this to my co-host Lee Bishop's attention for some clarity. What I've been seeing has made me question if people are actually thinking before they act and put things on record?
In this episode, we discuss the jaw dropping videos Kevin Gates has been sharing, the blurred lines of gender roles in relationships, Nick Cannon and his plight to spread his seed as far as possible, and Lee Bishop shares a few personal stories of his dating encounters. He also gives me a scenario of if I'd be willing to be a sister-wive to a "high value man".

"Violence In America: The Solutions" @nonperishablegoods podcast episode #34 I don't think anyone truly knows how we got here, but we're here. We are living through such turbulent, violent, uncivil, violent times. After the most recent mass shooting here in America, at Robb Elementary school located in the pro-gun state of Texas, there have been so many strong and weak causes and solutions presented, and we feel it's necessary to discuss.
America has sooo many more mass shootings than any other country, and we have more guns here than people. There are 121 guns per 100 people. There's 393 million guns in America, and many more that aren't registered. In the past we've heard, "guns don't kill people, people kill people." And they are. Yes, we need to address mental health, but a larger problem to be addressed is how easy it is to acquire a firearm in America. Most Americans want common sense gun laws such as universal background checks, red flag laws, gun buyback programs as well as safe storage laws to protect children. However, if you have been paying attention to this podcast you would understand that these laws aren't being put into place because people profit off of our pain here in America. Too many corporate interests of gun manufacturers, the gun lobby and the political power of the NRA is what's stopping us and our children from being as safe as possible. The way these mass shootings are happening statistically it's only a matter of time before it impacts every one of our neighborhoods. Make sure you vote in our primary and general local, state and federal elections to make sure we are electing officials who are going to make our communities safer by supporting common sense gun laws. We can do something to change this by exercising our right to vote. Our votes absolutely do matter.

Lately, our NON PERISHABLE GOODS Podcast topics have been getting people to want to JUMP IN the conversation. We are grateful and we welcome the passion and the opportunity to have dialogue about topics that directly impact all of us. Our first JUMP IN is with the great mind and cigar connoisseur @missmimivonswagg. She wanted to JUMP IN on our latest podcast episode #33 "ROE Vs. Wade Overturned in 2022?" Her perspective and the gems she dropped during our conversation truly opened my mind to other reasons why it is important for women to have the right to make their own choices when it comes to our bodies. She shares her personal story of adoption and how it correlates with abortion rights.

The latest, "unprecedented" shake up in America is the leak of an opinion drafted by supreme court justice Alito, which was in regards to the Roe vs. Wade legislation that protects women's rights. More specifically, abortion rights. It's unbelievable that we are discussing this in 2022. The conservatives in our country are strategically reversing all of the progress in the areas of civil and human rights. It seems like just last week republicans, conservatives - freedom liberty seekers were just yelling, "my body, my choice" when it came to the mask and vaccine mandates. Now with abortion it's a completely different tune. They should keep the same energy when it comes to other people's decisions for their life that literally doesn't impact them in any way. We truly have to work towards minding our own business, our own lives and decisions, which is a lot in itself, but to also worry about what others are doing is mind boggling. We have to stop trying to make others live, believe, walk and talk as we do.
I'm a devout believer in the teachings of Jesus Christ, and if this is truly a faith issue then leave that between God and the individual. The Bible doesn't specifically speak on abortion, and the scriptures that are being used are being taken out of context and used to justify people's stance. A lot of the scriptures and teachings I know of have more to do with love, forgiveness, repentance, redemption and salvation. Not of hate that I see so often from the anti-abortion movement, far right extremists poorly reflects the true teachings of Jesus. I always wonder if they actually read the Bible. We touch on so many things in this episode, so buckle up.

"Americans Enjoy Drugs: 420 Edition"
With many coming down from their high after celebrating 420 (unofficial holiday for weed smokers) we have to come to terms with the fact that Americans do and thoroughly enjoy drugs. We all have some sort of vice that could be drugs, alcohol, sex, food. We are all in search of something or simply just want to achieve pleasure.
The decades I've existed on this planet I've witnessed Marijuana go from being illegal to becoming a 61 billion dollar and counting industry. It's mind blowing that people are actually still in jail and have convictions on their records for various Marijuana charges. This episode we discuss how we've also evolved with Marijuana in our personal lives, our views on healing with drug use, and the importance of educating yourself on different substances. We also touch on the pros and cons of drug use, and how "420" originated in the Bay Area. San Rafael, CA to be exact.

"The Earth Will Humble Us" @nonperishablegoods podcast episode #31
We really have to start taking action to make this earth a better place for our children in so many ways. We are so focused on bettering ourselves, our present circumstances through obtaining more money, bigger homes, better investments and fancy things. Yet, none of these material items can stop or protect us from natural or man-made disasters. Our lives can be going fine until an "act of God" or a government leader decides to go to war, and uproots our way of life.
We're just humans with so many questions, and are constantly discussing possible solutions to help prolong our existence as safely as possible for everyone. Since the 80's scientists have been telling us we have to limit our human activity by changing our practices in our personal lives and businesses to reverse global warming/climate change by 2030. That is right around the corner, and we need to be more aware of how we are impacting our air, our waterways, the land and our communities with our actions. If we don't change, The Earth Will Humble Us.

So, many people want to quickly move past the slap between Will Smith and Chris Rock that was literally seen and heard around the world. There's several things we feel necessary to point out to hopefully find common ground. It's virtually impossible to get people on the same page with anything in America right now, but we still want to make the attempt.
When situations happen to other people it isn't for us to judge and condemn them, but it's for us to look and evaluate what's going on in our own lives so we don't find ourselves in a similar situation. We have to stop choosing violence, America. The consequences are too grand.

As a recently discovered Jewbian (African/Jewish) and my co-host is a life-long Blasian (African/Taiwanese) we find characterizing people solely on race/color is exhausting. If you didn't feel our sarcasm in this episode's title it will be made extremely clear from our conversation. Everything has always been so black and white literally and figuratively. Race was created to classify us, and to keep us in nice, cute, labeled boxes to oppress some and to exalt others. Your skin color is either a privilege or can be a detriment to your success based on systemic racism. In previous episodes, we discuss how race doesn't tell the complete story about us as much as ethnicity and culture.
Interracial marriage is a fairly new practice in America. It wasn't entirely legal in all 50 states of America until 1967. Our society is becoming more of a "melting pot", and many aren't adjusting well to this. If you notice we are given more options of how we identify on applications and the census. I'm sure they are using this data to further classify us, as well as sell our data to companies and agencies, so they can streamline how to sell us products or make judgements, restrictions or allocate funding based on our ethnicity.
No matter what creation story you believe we all come from the same God, same tadpole or same Big Bang. I really wish we could get away from judging, discriminating people based on their color and put more emphasis on the content of their character. Martin Luther King, Jr. was really on to something with the previous ideal.

The 2nd day into Black History Month things started out pretty action-packed, so we had to talk about it. Many of these situations caught our attention because we are curious what will transpire in the near and distant future. February also marks the start of the Chinese New Year, and this year is the "Year of the Tiger", which represents resilience and strength. I felt that was very fitting for the plight of the black experience in 2022. This episode we touch on ASAP Rocky and Rihanna's greatest collaboration to-date, the HBCU bomb threats, Whoopi Goldberg's controversial statement about the Holocaust, former Miami Dolphin coach Brian Flores suing the NFL for discriminatory hiring practices, mental health and more!
