在经济学上，讲到一个市场如何影响另一个市场，经济学家们会用苹果和橙子举例。苹果供应减少，会影响到有多少人去购买橙子，有可能橙子的销量会增加，但是，也不是所有喜欢苹果的人都会喜欢橙子。

无花果是人类最早种植的植物之一，在热带和温带广泛种植，无花果价格相对便宜。早在1400年，fig无花果就是不值钱的代名词，所以就有短语叫not worth a fig（worth 形容词，值……钱）一文不值。

Top banana 和 second banana 这两个词都是来源于喜剧。

喜剧表演中有个很常见的桥段，地上有个香蕉皮，演员踩上去很滑稽地摔倒。踩到香蕉皮的这个表演最早是出现在19世纪末，那时候香蕉大量出口，在各地都很受欢迎，但当时人们不知道要怎样处理香蕉皮，造成严重的城市卫生问题。喜剧演员模仿城市居民踩到香蕉皮摔倒，做了这种很滑稽表演。在喜剧演出里，如果说一个演员是top banana，意思是ta是这个喜剧的主角、主演，配角就叫second banana。后来，top banana衍生出在某个团体、组织、公司中权力最大的人、最重要的人的意思；相应地，second banana衍生出副手，二把手的意思。
