For salon owners, the margins are usually tight. “A good salon makes only 5 to 6 percent on the bottom line and has to have the owner working with a full book of clients,” according to Allure Magazine. Monthly business expenses can include everything from payroll, products, cleaning services, utilities, marketing, and of course rent.
Unfortunately, all of these costs don’t disappear just because a pandemic has decimated income. Some landlords are threatening legal action if salon owners don’t pay. As some owners struggle to pay rent, digging deeper into minimal cash reserves available, the effect has been felt by every assistant, receptionist, colorist, stylist, and janitor. Here to dive into this we have Jason Backe. Jason is the Founder of Starring by Ted Gibson Salon Concept and Co-creator of Starring by Ted Gibson products. He is also the founder of Worth Up Alliance.

Imagine growing up not looking like the rest of your family, and having people make jokes like, “Where’d she come from?! She must be the milkman’s daughter.”
Dani Shapiro, best-selling author, and podcast host took an Ancestry DNA test at 54-years old and discovered that her family had been hiding a secret from her for her entire life.
But what would you do if you found out that your father, the father who had raised you, the father you adored, wasn’t your father at all? Would you act as though nothing had changed and go with your life, business as usual? Or would you start a podcast to help other people uncover their own family secrets?

What makes a man a man? Chris Hunter tells us about the experience that changed his mind regarding America’s hypermasculine culture.
Chris Hunter is the Co-Founder and CEO of Koia, the 100 percent plant protein drink that is naturally craveable and uses simple ingredients to deliver unparalleled nutrition. His stamp on the beverage industry first began in 2005 with Phusion Projects. After seeing the huge popularity in combining caffeine and alcohol, Hunter and his partners created Four Loko, a high-profile flavored malt beverage that grew to be the eighth largest brewers in the country at its peak.
Chris believes plant protein is the future, but that it will only work if people love how it tastes. Koia achieves this as it’s low sugar and high protein but doesn’t compromise on flavor. Koia is now sold in more than 5,000 stores across the country.

“The police are the community and the community is the police. If we don’t start recognizing that simple fact, if we don’t start healing – together, we will continue to wake up to the same headlines of unarmed black men being shot, of police officers being ambushed, and of a growing rift between police and the people they’re sworn to protect.”
Today’s guest is police officer, Dr. Obed Magny. Dr. Magny grew up in Boston, Massachusetts where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Dr. Magny relocated to Sacramento where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Emergency Services Administration from the California State University at Long Beach, and a Doctorate Degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne. Currently a police officer in the Sacramento Police Department, Dr. Magny works in patrol. Previous assignments included Narcotics, School Resource Officer, Crime Suppression Unit, and the Parole Intervention Team. Dr. Magny also served on the Board of Directors for the Sacramento Police Officers Association (SPOA) for three years.

Imagine growing up bi-racial in a small Georgia town, the daughter of divorced parents, a Scottish/Irish father, and a Japanese mother.
Kelly Nishimoto, self-taught, Los Angeles-based fashion designer, lifestyle pimp, and creator of Cutebootylounge, designed a wedding dress out of trash bags and electrical tape at 13, and eventually launched a full collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
But what would you do if a series of events led to you being offered a job on television, getting pregnant, and being without a home -- all at the same time? Would throw in the towel and chance losing the part of a lifetime? Or would you show up anyway, knowing that you’d be forced to live a double life?

Although women are at greater risk for negative consequences following traumatic events, many often hesitate to seek mental health treatment. Survivors often wait years to receive help, while others never receive treatment at all. Untreated posttraumatic symptoms not only have tremendous mental health implications but can also lead to adverse effects on physical health. Female survivors may encounter physical symptoms including headaches, gastrointestinal problems, and sexual dysfunction. Although the mental and physical symptoms of PTSD-stress can be quite debilitating, trauma is often undiagnosed by health professionals due to a lack of training, time, and resources.
In this episode, we’re talking to Melissa Barker, founder, and CEO of The Phoenix Project, a digital community that celebrates healing and authentic connections.

January 2021 marks the ninth month of a pandemic. Drinking (day and otherwise) has skyrocketed, and for people in recovery, relapsing (drinking again after one has set a sobriety date) has too. So just how does one retain or regain their balance in recovery during this perilous time? Today we have my dear, dear friend and woman of the hour, Holly Whitaker.
Holly’s best-selling book, Quit Like A Woman, a memoir/self-help book about her own recovery was released one year ago and the paperback launches this week. Holly is the founder and CEO of Tempest (formerly Hip Sobriety). With years of experience in the fields of healthcare and tech, she created a human-centered recovery modality and virtual platform offering education, community, and support services, in 2014. Holly has been featured in the New York Times, Vogue, and TechCrunch and was named in Inc’s 2019 Female Founders 100 List.
