Lesson Summary:

In Moroni chapters 7 through 9, Mormon, Moroni's father, writes about the principles of faith, hope, and charity, highlighting charity as the pure love of Christ that is essential for salvation. Mormon shares a sermon on discerning good from evil, encouraging us to judge righteously by the light of Christ. Additionally, he provides insight into the challenges faced by the Nephites and Lamanites during their wars, urging his son Moroni to remain faithful and strong despite witnessing widespread wickedness and despair. Mormon's letters to Moroni include counsel and expressions of his deep love for him, emphasizing the need to endure in faith, even amid difficult circumstances. Throughout these chapters, themes of love, obedience, and resilience during adversity are prominent.

Moroni 1-6 is an insightful section where Moroni, the last Nephite prophet, shares valuable teachings and ordinances with us. He provides guidance on priesthood ordination, the sacrament prayers, and the process of keeping the church pure. He emphasizes the importance of repentance and humility and shares the steps for baptism. Moroni’s focus is on ensuring that the church remains faithful, and he highlights the significance of regular church meetings to nourish members spiritually. It's a beautiful reminder of how essential ordinances and church fellowship are in our spiritual journey.

Moroni 3:2 | Why do sacred experiences often involve physical and spiritual components? What symbolism do you see in the laying on of hands?

Lesson Summary:

Ether 12-15 details a period of intense conflict and prophecy in the Jaredite civilization. Ether, the prophet, emphasizes the importance of faith, illustrating how it precedes miracles and is crucial for spiritual strength, referencing past prophets like Alma and Moroni. Despite Ether’s warnings, the people embrace wickedness, leading to widespread wars. Coriantumr, a pivotal king, sees prophetic visions of his people's annihilation if they do not repent. As battles intensify, with leaders like Shared and Shiz rising against him, Coriantumr grapples with relentless warfare and personal injuries. Ultimately, Ether’s prophecies come to pass as the Jaredite civilization collapses due to internal turmoil, leaving Coriantumr as the last survivor, fulfilling God’s word that another group—the Nephites—would inhabit the land. These chapters highlight the consequences of pride and the power of faith.

Ether 12:12 | How do you define a miracle? How do we balance seeking and expecting miracles, as President Nelson invited us to do, and patiently allowing the Lord’s will to be done?

Ether 13:1-14 | Why does Ether bother telling them “all things” if they are so wicked? Why not just write them down for future generations who will appreciate them? Is there power in prophesying even if no one heeds your words? 

Ether 13:1,31, 14:12 | Why is this the consequence God chooses for Coriantumr? Is this a fitting end for someone who caused so much destruction or is God in relentless pursuit of him?

Lesson Summary:

In Ether 6-11, we follow the journey of the Jaredites as they cross the ocean in barges, guided by the light of shining stones. Upon reaching the promised land, they establish a society under the leadership of various kings. However, the narrative quickly shifts to a cycle of prosperity, wickedness, and upheaval as they struggle with power, pride, and internal conflicts. The text highlights moral lessons on the consequences of rejecting the Lord's guidance and the recurring theme of repentance and redemption. Despite times of righteousness, the Jaredites often fall back into chaos, foreshadowing future trials for their civilization.

Ether 6:12 | What are tender mercies to you? When have you seen them? How did you recognize them? Did your mortal mind try to reconcile them? How did you get past those feelings and find divinity in them?

Ether 8:7-10 | How does Satan use good motives to do tempt us to do sinful things? How do we guard against this? How do the two great commandments help you know how to channel your emotions for good?

Ether 11:12-13 | Do you think this happens today? We know the work will roll forward but are there times when prophets withdraw? What causes a prophet’s heart to mourn? Can you mourn and maintain a sense of rest and optimism simultaneously?

This week we’ll learn the origin story of the Jaredite nation in the book of Ether. We’ll follow Jared and his incredible brother as they lead their people away from Babel towards a whole new life in the Promised Land. The road between the two locations is filled with opportunities to test and increase their faith. We’ll also study Moroni’s words about the sealed plates and hear his testimony of the witnesses that will attest to the truthfulness of the book.
