Out of the Blue: A Michigan Sports Podcast

In this weeks episode, Andy and Jared try to sift through the mud surrounding the Jim Harbaugh saga at Michigan and what roles Athletic Director Warde Manuel and President Santa Ono had to play in his return. They address the departures of Eyabi Okie and Gemon Green and litigate how Michigan will make up for their production next year before looking at the returning players and how the roster-in particular the offensive line- will look in 2023.

In the back half, OOTB welcomes Kellen Voss from Maize N' Brew to talk about the up and down Wolverines men's basketball season so far and try and determine whether or not Juwan Howard was in fact "born on 3rd base" as some fans have suggested.

Even though the Michigan Wolverines are playing limbo with head coach Jim Harbaugh at the moment regarding his future with the program, the rest of the coaching staff is conducting business as usual. That includes recruiting, which was a bit of a focal point this past weekend, as three important 2024 prospects were on campus.

Von Lozon and Jon Simmons discuss how the visits went for four-star running back Jordan Marshall, five-star cornerback Bryce West and in-state four-star defensive back Jacob Oden, as well as how Jim Harbaugh returning has a major impact on recruiting, on this week’s Future Brew.

After two weeks of speculation following Michigan’s Fiesta Bowl loss to TCU about whether Jim Harbaugh will return or go to the NFL, the question was finally answered.

Michigan president Santa Ono tweeted that he spoke with Harbaugh and confirmed he will return to Michigan in 2023. Luke Ghiardi and Scotty White discuss the return, what it means for Michigan, and some of the underlying concerns surrounding Warde Manuel regarding the statements, on this week’s Brewcast.

In this weeks episode, Andy and Jared rejoice in the news of Blake Corum's return to Michigan for his Senior season. They talk about what that means for the running back rotation, and how Michigan will make up for some of the other departures that were announced. They reflect on the basketball loss to Michigan State and the root of some of those struggles, before making cases for Aidan Hutchinson for DROY and Michigan as Defensive Line University.

Multiple Michigan players announced their decisions about their futures today. Mike Morris, Mazi Smith, and Luke Schoonmaker all announced they will leave Michigan and declare for the 2023 NFL Draft. But the biggest news came on the Rich Eisen show, when star running back Blake Corum announced he would be returning to Michigan for one more season. Luke Ghiardi and Scotty White discuss how much this impacts Michigan and what the expectations should be for the Wolverines in 2023.

The Michigan Wolverines ended 2022 on a low note, losing to TCU in the semifinal round of the College Football Playoffs. They ended 2021 in a similar way, but you would have thought the next recruiting class would be a really successful one coming off a Big Ten title and reaching the CFP.

Alas, it was a letdown — ranked 17th overall and not a single top-100 prospect signed with the program during the early signing period last month. A big reason for that is due to the flirtation Jim Harbaugh had with the Minnesota Vikings last offseason. It stunted all momentum the Wolverines had on the recruiting trail and led highly ranked prospects to not consider Michigan.

The 2024 class could be a historically great one for Michigan, but with more Harbaugh/NFL rumors and stories being written and discussed, there is a cause for concern with slowing down the momentum on the recruiting trail, much like with the 2023 class last offseason. Von Lozon and Jon Simmons discuss on this week’s Future Brew.

The Michigan Wolverines made more costly mistakes combined against the TCU Horned Frogs in the Fiesta Bowl than they have all year put together, but they still had their chances to win the game late. Nonetheless, their efforts came up just short of their fourth and final goal — a national championship.

Luke Ghiardi and Scotty White recap the game and explain why this one is going to sting for years to come on this week’s Brewcast.
