How do you feel about the place you live now?

    Is it fun?

Or do you feel it’s a bit boring?

In Japanese class, we do this kind of conversation practice.

    “How is life in Singapore?”

At that time, I sometimes hear answers like this.

    “It’s not fun.”

    “It’s not interesting.”

    “It’s boring.”

When I hear that, I don’t say anything.

    Because everyone feels differently.

But today, I’d like to share my thoughts a little.

I don’t think Singapore is very boring.

Actually, I feel it’s quite enjoyable.

Of course, the cost of living is high.

Hobbies that cost money can be a bit difficult.

    For example, golf or shopping.

    Drinking or gambling as well.

Without money, it’s not easy to enjoy them.

But there are other kinds of hobbies.

    For example, reading books.

    Playing games.

    Some people like sleeping.

    Some people love eating.

Some people enjoy cooking or exercising.

These kinds of hobbies are the same wherever you are, aren’t they?

In Japan, in America, in China—it’s the same.

So I feel the place doesn’t matter so much.

    Also, Singapore is very convenient.

You can get many things easily.

There are many kinds of food.

Don’t you think this is quite a luxury?

There is also this kind of opinion.

Some people say there isn’t much nature.

    Yes, I understand that.

If you like mountains or skiing, it may feel lacking.

In Japan, you can enjoy those things each season.

But what if we look at it differently?

Some people want to live in a warm country and relax near the sea all year round.

I think some people dream of that kind of life.

Those people might feel disappointed living in Japan.

    There is also language.

In Japan, many people study English or Chinese.

But there aren’t many chances to use them.

Some people feel it’s a bit of a waste.

In Singapore, you can hear many languages.

You can use them in daily life.

For people who want to try speaking different languages, it’s a great environment.

    So, in the end,

whether a place feels boring or not

depends on your mindset and your hobbies.

Even in the same place, some people feel it’s fun,

    and others feel it’s boring.

    For me, if possible,

I’d like to find enjoyable parts and live that way.

  • Ep30 - Rules or morals? The difference between Singapore and Japan

Rules or manners? Strict rules or gentle reminders...what works better? The same idea can feel completely different depending on the country. Let’s explore that difference together!

When you take a train or bus, do you think about any rules?

Like not eating or not drinking, there are rules, right?

In Singapore, you are not allowed to eat or drink on trains or buses.

There are notices about this rule in stations and on trains.

The fine amount is also written.

There are also pictograms, so it’s very easy to understand.

When I first saw it, I was a bit surprised.

But I don’t think Singapore is especially strict.

Because in Japan, there are also rules on trains.

But I think the way they communicate it is a bit different.

    Let’s think about that difference.

In Japan, people often use the word “manners.”

When you look at posters, they often say “It causes trouble.”

Instead of saying “It’s a rule,” they are saying “It’s about manners.”

It feels like they are saying, “If you do this, people around you will be bothered.”

In Japan, people tend to feel that acting the same as others is a good thing.

So if people feel “you are different from others,” many may feel uncomfortable.

On the other hand, Singapore is a multicultural society.

There are people with many different ways of thinking.

So not everyone shares the same sense of values.

Even if you say “It’s about manners,” some people might think, “I don’t agree.”

Maybe that’s why the rules are clearly defined.

When it’s said “this is the law,” it’s clear for everyone.

    I find both ways interesting.

Which way feels clearer to you?

If you have a chance to go to Japan, try looking at the posters on the train.

Some posters say “You must not do this.”

But many say things like “This is bad manners,”

or “That behaviour might seem a bit strange.”

I think noticing these differences is quite interesting.

So please enjoy looking at them.

I’ve been living in Singapore for a few years now.

Many of my friends have come to visit me.

Some come for work, and some come for holidays.

And each time, they contact me.

    That makes me very happy.

My friends live in different places like Kansai, Tokyo, and Nagoya.

It’s difficult to go back to Japan many times just to see everyone.

But because they come to Singapore, I don’t feel lonely.

When I ask them, they say Singapore is easy to visit.

It’s close to Japan, safe, and fun.

    I feel the same.

If I lived in Europe, America, or Australia, it might be different.

I feel like it would be harder for them to visit.

Singapore feels like just the right distance.

    Asia is close and attractive.

So they visit me while they are travelling.

    I really appreciate that.

When my friends visit, I take them to local restaurants and show them around.

    They really enjoy it.

Seeing that makes me happy too.

When I feel I can guide them around Singapore, I feel like I’ve grown a bit.

And talking about Japan with my friends is also very enjoyable.

We talk about sports and comedy.

Sometimes we get excited talking about mutual friends.

I think these are conversations you can only have with friends from Japan.

I realised those moments are very important.

Some of my friends live in countries like Vietnam, Thailand, China, and Mexico.

    They live in different countries.

But I think there are still not so many Japanese people living abroad.

I feel like more people will live abroad in the future.

People often ask me, “When is the best time to go to Japan?”

To be honest, it’s quite a difficult question to answer.

Because I feel that every season has its own charm.

But there is one thing I can say.

You should be careful about the weather.

For example, in spring, pollen starts to spread.

For people with hay fever, it can be a bit tough.

And after that, the rainy season comes.

The rain continues longer than you might expect.

If you plan to visit a theme park like USJ, it might be a bit difficult.

But during that time, hydrangeas bloom beautifully.

Hydrangeas in the rain look especially beautiful, I think.

And when the rainy season ends, it becomes very hot.

The sunlight is very strong, and just being outside makes you tired.

That heat continues until around September.

And during that time, there are also many typhoons.

If you have plans for USJ during typhoon season, you might feel a bit worried.

Plans may change, so you need to be a bit careful.

    What about winter?

I think many people like winter.

But winter in Japan is very cold.

Outside it’s cold, but inside buildings it’s very warm.

The difference is big, and it can cause some trouble.

Let me share an example from my own experience.

Because it’s cold outside, I wear warm clothes.

But when I go into a restaurant, it’s very warm.

    And then I start sweating.

Then when I go back outside, it’s very cold.

And as a result, I caught a cold.

Honestly, I didn’t understand what was happening.

When I think about it, life in Singapore feels easier.

I’ve talked about many things so far,

but in the end, every season has something enjoyable.

The scenery, food, and festivals all change depending on the season.

Even the same place can feel different and enjoyable.

So I think it’s best to go at the time you like.

It may not be a perfect answer,

but I feel that’s one way to answer it.

Don Don Donki comes to mind.

    I think it’s a very well-known shop.

In Singapore, it’s called Don Don Donki,

but in Japan, it’s called Don Quijote.

The name is a little different, isn’t it?

This name comes from the novel “Don Quixote” by the Spanish writer Cervantes.

What kind of image do you have of Donki in Singapore?

It’s a shop where you can find food, snacks, cosmetics, and many Japanese products.

Many people might think of it like a supermarket.

But Donki in Japan is a bit different.

Of course, they also sell many kinds of items.

But in Japan, it has a strong image of being a cheap shop.

On the other hand, I don’t think that image is very strong in Singapore.

Sometimes, it even feels a bit expensive.

Maybe it’s because the products are imported.

I think this kind of difference is interesting.

    There are similar examples too.

There is Royal Host in Takashimaya in Singapore, right?

There are some reasonably priced dishes,

but some items are quite expensive.

But in Japan, Royal Host is a family restaurant.

It has the image of a casual place to go.

Even the same shop can feel different depending on the country.

When I was a child, I often went to Donki.

I bought snacks and fireworks there.

When I met friends, we often shopped at Donki.

It was fun because we could buy a lot for a low price.

    It feels very nostalgic.

    Are you interested in clothes?

If you wear very different clothes, you might stand out.

Even randomly chosen clothes are fine.

I feel like people don’t really care.

In a good way, they are not interested in me.

    That feels very comfortable.

When you listen to music, is it important for you to understand the lyrics? Or can you enjoy songs in different languages even if you don’t understand them? In Singapore, I feel like many people enjoy music from all over the world. Today, I’d like to talk about that.

Do you often listen to songs in foreign languages?

Can you enjoy them even if you don’t understand the lyrics?

After coming to Singapore, something surprised me a little.

That many people listen to songs from many different countries.

Songs from Korea, Japan, and China.

Also songs from Southeast Asia and in English.

There is really a wide variety.

And there is one more thing that surprised me.

Many people seem to enjoy the music even without understanding the lyrics.

When I saw that, I thought it was amazing.

Actually, I’m not really the type who listens to music a lot.

    But I do listen sometimes.

At those times, I mostly choose Japanese songs or English songs I can understand a bit.

If I don’t understand even a little of the lyrics, I feel like I don’t really want to listen because I don’t know what the song is about.

Of course, I also like songs with nice melodies.

Sometimes I think, “Wow, they sing so well.”

But when I don’t understand the lyrics at all,

    I gradually lose focus.

It becomes a bit hard to listen until the end.

If it’s just music playing in a shop, I don’t mind.

But when I choose music myself, it feels different.

I don’t often choose songs whose meaning I don’t understand.

That’s why I was surprised when I saw people in Singapore.

Many people seem to listen to songs they like, even without understanding them.

Some people listen just because they like the melody.

I felt that way of enjoying music is very free.

Of course, I think there are people like that in Japan too.

But around me, I hadn’t seen many.

Especially songs in a language they don’t understand,

I feel there were not many people who chose to listen to them.

Maybe the environment in Singapore is related.

It’s a place with many languages and cultures.

So people may be naturally used to different languages.

    Compared to that, in Japan,

many people have fewer chances to experience foreign languages.

So that might be one reason for the difference.

    What about you?

Can you enjoy songs even if you don’t understand the lyrics?

Or do you prefer understanding the meaning?

Recently, my way of thinking has changed a little.

I feel maybe it’s okay to enjoy music even without understanding it.

I want to slowly try listening to different kinds of songs.

Today, I’d like to talk about anime and manga.

Which do you like more, anime or manga?

In Singapore, I feel that anime is more popular.

Many people around me talk about anime.

    But I personally prefer manga.

    I’ve always liked reading books.

I feel more comfortable reading than watching.

With manga, you can enjoy the original drawings by the author.

    That’s something I really like.

Also, manga is quick to read.

One chapter can be finished in just a few minutes.

But anime sometimes feels a bit long.

Even the same story can take more time.

When I was a child, I also watched a lot of anime.

So it’s not that I dislike anime.

I just feel I prefer manga now.

    And to be honest,

    anime is great, but

there were times when I wished people in Singapore would read manga too.

Even in English, I hoped they would give it a try.

But after coming to Singapore, my thinking changed a little.

I feel it might be because of the environment.

In Japan, books and manga are very familiar.

You can even buy manga magazines at convenience stores.

From childhood, reading manga was normal.

We shared manga and talked about it with friends.

I feel I grew to like manga because of that environment.

On the other hand, I noticed something interesting.

When it comes to American hero stories,

I usually watch the movies, not the comics.

I know there are original comics, but I don’t really feel like reading them.

I think I see them as something to watch as movies.

    Thinking about it like that,

    for people outside Japan,

it might be natural to start with anime.

So it makes sense that anime is more popular.

    Rather than comparing the two,

it might be that people only know anime.

In Japan, many anime are released every year.

There are so many that it’s hard to watch them all.

So you can enjoy a lot just with anime.

    みなさんは、どちらが好きですか。

    Which do you prefer?

    マンガですか、それともアニメですか。

    Manga, or anime?

    ==Japanese and English scripts==

    みなさんは、麻雀をしたことがありますか。Have you ever played mahjong?

    私は日本にいるときに、友達とよく遊びました。

When I was in Japan, I often played with my friends.

I liked those slow evenings when we gathered and played.

After coming to Singapore, I also had chances to play mahjong.

At that moment, the first thing I thought was,

    “Wow, this is so easy.”

After hearing the rules a little, I could start playing right away.

What surprised me most was how you win.

You can win even after calling tiles like chi or pon.

I thought, “Is that really okay?”

In Japanese mahjong, there are many conditions.

For example, you need specific patterns to win.

If your hand includes certain tiles like 1 or 9, or special tiles,

    the conditions can change.

In some cases, calling tiles means you cannot win.

So Japanese mahjong feels a bit difficult.

On the other hand, Singapore mahjong is very simple.

It feels like you can win as long as you make a shape.

So the game moves very quickly.

    It keeps going fast.

There was another thing I found interesting.

There are tiles like birds, cats, mice, and centipedes.

    When I first saw them,

I thought, “What are these for?”

When I asked, I learned they are like bonus tiles.

If you have them, you get extra points.

it felt very fresh to me.

    When you notice these differences,

it feels like a completely different game.

I don’t think one is better than the other.

They are just different ways to play.

Like with cards, there are many ways to play.

    It feels similar to that.

If you are starting from now,

Singapore mahjong may be easier to start with.

The rules are simple, and you can enjoy it quickly.

On the other hand, if you like thinking slowly,

    you might prefer Japanese mahjong.

    I think both are interesting.

It’s nice to choose depending on your mood.

    こういう違いを体験するのは、

    Experiencing these differences

    とても面白いなと思いました。

    feels very interesting to me.

    ==Japanese and English scripts==

Since coming to Singapore, I’ve started going to concerts.

    Why is that?

Because in Singapore, it’s easier to get tickets than in Japan.

In Japan, tickets for popular artists like YOASOBI, Ado, and Mrs. GREEN APPLE are very hard to get.

Of course, it’s not easy to get tickets in Singapore either.

Still, why is it easier in Singapore than in Japan?

Because the system for buying tickets is different.

    Let me start with Japan.

In Japan, people in fan clubs can often apply first.

You need to pay money to join a fan club.

So people who pay have a better chance to get tickets.

In other words, if you’re not in the fan club, it’s very hard to get tickets.

On the other hand, Singapore is different.

When tickets go on sale, you go to the website.

Then you get a number to wait in line.

    That number is random.

If your number is small, you can enter early.

But if your number is big, you have to wait longer.

During that time, tickets can sell out.

What’s important is that everyone follows the same rule.

It doesn’t matter if you are in a fan club or not.

Big fans and casual fans start from the same point.

In that sense, I feel it’s fair.

If you’re lucky, anyone can get tickets.

But how do big fans feel?

People who have supported for a long time may feel it’s unfair if they can’t get tickets just because of luck.

Some people may feel it’s not fair that someone like me, who is just curious, can get a ticket.

    That may be true.

Which system is better depends on how you think.

    Which do you prefer?
