When you take the train and the bus, you use a card, right?
Some people use an EZ-Link card, and some use a credit card.
Many people also use cards on their phones.
You just tap and can enter right away.
I feel it’s very convenient.
In Japan, there are similar cards.
For example, SUICA or ICOCA.
They are quite well-known.
Which IC card do you have?
If you have one, you can use it in many places.
But in Japan, you need to top up cards like SUICA or ICOCA.
It is different from using a credit card in Singapore.
When the balance gets low, I feel a bit worried.
It’s a bit embarrassing to stop at the gate.
On the other hand, in Singapore, you can just use a credit card.
You don’t need to top it up.
You don’t need to worry about the balance, so it feels easy.
It’s also convenient if you want to collect credit card points.
You don’t need to carry many cards.
Students can also use a student card with an EZ-Link function.
They can take trains and buses with just that, which is very convenient.
In Japan, student cards and IC cards are separate.
Sometimes it feels a bit troublesome.
I hope Japan will also allow credit cards for trains and buses like Singapore.
I wonder when that time will come.

Have you ever heard of a game called Go?It started in China thousands of years ago, but it’s still played today—even in Singapore.
At first, it looks simple. Just black and white stones. But once you try it… you realise it’s not so easy.
Let me share a small story about my experience.

Do you know the game called Go?
It is a very famous board game in Japan.
It is played with black and white stones.
The rules are simple, but the game is very deep.
but these days players from China and Korea are even stronger.
In Singapore as well, many people learn Go.
Actually, one of my close friends teaches Go.
That friend really loves Go.
Before, that friend invited me and I used to go to a Go gathering.
People gather about once a week and play Go together.
My friend taught many things to me, because I was a beginner.
He taught me how to place the stones and some basic ideas.
At first, I did not understand very well.
But little by little, I started to understand.
And I thought Go was very interesting.
However, there was one problem.
Everyone was extremely strong.
No matter how many times I played, I almost never won.
Go is fun, but I think it is a very difficult game.
It is said that Go began in China.
And it was about four thousand years ago.
It has a very long history.
In ancient China, it was an important skill for kings and nobles.
Maybe it is a little similar to children today going to tuition, or learning piano or swimming.
In Japan, many people first learned about Go from a manga.
The name of the manga is Hikaru no Go.
It is a very popular manga.
I also learned about Go because of that manga.
I watched the anime and I also own all the manga volumes.
It is a very interesting story.
While thinking about topics for this podcast,
I suddenly remembered Go.
And I started to feel like playing again.
Maybe I will visit my friend again.
And this time, I would like to win at least once.
Which type are you—do you prefer staying at home or going out?
I’m definitely a home person. If I don’t have to go out, I won’t. Even simple plans can sometimes feel a bit heavy, so I decided to talk about that feeling.

Ah… I have lunch with a friend at one today.
I feel a bit lazy about it.
I kind of just want to stay home.
Have you ever felt like this?
Sometimes I feel like that.
It’s not that I don’t want to see my friends.
I just like being at home.
How about you?
Do you like staying at home?

Today I want to talk about this idea.
I like spending time at home.
On my days off, I often read books at home.
Sometimes I work on this podcast.
Sometimes I write my blog.
Before I realise it, the day is already over.
But recently I started exercising a little.
I go to the gym two or three times a week.
Honestly, I prefer staying at home.
But I try to go to the gym for my health.
But honestly, it feels troublesome.
I don’t dislike exercising or meeting friends.
Once I start exercising, it is actually enjoyable.
And when I meet my friends, it is really fun.
But I simply like being at home more.
So I don’t feel like going out.
Before leaving the house, I feel like I’m fighting with myself.
There are many days when I think, “Maybe I should skip the gym today.”
Some days I even feel like saying, “I have a fever, so I can’t go.”
That’s how strongly I sometimes don’t want to go out.
This is actually the hardest part.
Do you understand this feeling?
Do you prefer staying at home?
Or do you prefer going out?

Are you okay with waiting for people?
Today I’d like to talk a little about waiting.
This is a continuation of the previous episode.
Last time, I talked about people arriving late.
Today, I’ll share some thoughts about waiting.
In the past, I didn’t really like waiting.
Of course, I am late sometimes too.
But usually I try to arrive on time, or a little early.
So when I lived in Japan,
I think I sometimes felt a little irritated with friends who were late.
Of course, if they said “sorry,” it was okay.
But if they said nothing, I think I felt a bit annoyed.
But after coming to Singapore, something changed.
Few people arrive exactly on time.
So I started to think that it is normal.
Because I came to another country,
I felt that different ways of thinking are natural.
So I changed the way I think a little.
The meeting time
is not the “real” time, I told myself.
I started to think it begins a little later.
It’s a bit funny, isn’t it?
But I still feel a bit sorry if I am late.
So I still arrive a little early.
Usually about ten minutes early.
But when I do that,
Sometimes I wait about twenty minutes.
Well, I guess this can’t be helped either.
When you are in another country,
I think it is important to follow the local way.
Little by little, I think I need to get used to this feeling.
People arrive late for many different reasons. In this episode, I share a small cultural difference I noticed after living abroad.

Why do people arrive late?
Today I’d like to talk a little about differences in how people think about time.
Of course, we cannot say everyone is the same.
Even in Japan, some people arrive late to work or school.
Even people who are usually punctual can be five minutes late sometimes.
But compared with people in Singapore, I feel Japanese people are a little stricter about time.
For example, imagine we plan to meet at 1 pm.
In Singapore, people do not always gather exactly at one.
Often it becomes 1:15 or even 1:30.
When I hear the reasons, there are many.
“The bus didn’t come,”
“The traffic was heavy,”
I hear these reasons quite often.
But sometimes I think about this.
Japanese people often think about these things beforehand.
Maybe the bus will not come.
Maybe the road will be busy.
So we leave home a little earlier.
If the meeting time is one,
we might leave home to arrive around 12:45.
So even if something happens, we still have time.
If we arrive early, we may feel a little bored.
But many Japanese people think like this.
It’s okay to be a little bored.
But making a friend wait is not so nice.
Of course, I’m not saying one way is right or wrong.
I think it is simply a difference in thinking.
I always bring a tablet when I go out.
When I wait for friends, I read a book.
So waiting is not really boring for me.
I don’t get angry.
But sometimes I have a small thought.
Maybe many people
expect the bus to arrive at the perfect time,
and the road not to be busy,
and they leave home hoping to arrive exactly on time.
So maybe that is why people arrive a little late each time.
Well, I guess it can’t be helped.
Differences in time sense like this are also an interesting part of living abroad.

Why do department stores in Singapore stay open so late?
Today I’d like to talk about department stores in Singapore.
In Singapore,
many shops stay open late at night.
Many of them stay open until around 9:30 or 10.
When I first saw this, I was a little surprised.
In Japan, department stores close earlier.
For example, places like Daimaru, Parco, or Hankyu.
Most of them close around eight in the evening.
So when I came to Singapore,
I felt, “Wow, shops stay open quite late here.”
Because the shops are open at night, many people are outside.
Even on weekdays there are many people.
Of course, there are also many people on weekends.
People are walking outside energetically even late at night.
When I see that, I sometimes wonder if everyone will be okay for work tomorrow.
But when I think about it,
people in Japan are also outside late at night.
In Tokyo or Osaka, people are also walking around at night.
But when Japanese people are out late at night,
it is often because they go to karaoke or izakaya.
It is usually not because they go to department stores.
In Singapore, izakaya are also open late.
But department stores staying open late feels a little different from Japan.
Why are people still at department stores so late at night?
I think small differences like this are one of the interesting parts of living abroad.

Even people watching for the first time might enjoy it.
There are fewer players.
So the space feels wider.
It is easier to score.
I think that is another fun point.
When I talk with students in Singapore,
I feel there are not so many people strongly interested in sports.
In Japan, some people continue sports at university or even after they start working.
International competitions are often on the news.
So in Japan, watching sports feels a bit more common.
Of course, not everyone.
I am also not really the watching type.
Even so, I enjoyed Rugby Sevens.
The tempo is fast.
I found myself watching very closely.
From primary school to high school, I played sports.
I continued for 12 years.
During that time, I experienced excitement and strong emotions many times.
When I watched the Rugby Sevens match, I remembered those feelings.
My heart started to beat faster.
It feels a bit like watching an emotional scene in a drama or anime.
For people who don’t usually watch sports,
Rugby Sevens might be a chance to discover how fun watching sports can be.
If you ever have the chance,
Please try watching it once.
You might discover a new kind of enjoyment.
Valentine’s Day — a romantic day, full of nervous moments.
Having experienced it in both Singapore and Japan, I’ll share how it feels from both sides.

About Valentine’s Day.
Today, I would like to talk about Valentine’s Day.
In Singapore,
I hear that men often give presents to women.
I have seen people holding flowers on the train.
They were beautiful bouquets.
It makes the day feel a bit romantic.
So, what about Japan?
In Japan, it is the opposite.
Women give chocolate to men.
Not flowers.
Chocolate.
When I was a student, I looked forward to that day.
I thought maybe I might receive some.
At school, I quietly checked my locker.
I also looked inside my desk drawer.
Usually, the popular boys receive many chocolates.
The other boys do not receive many.
I think that is quite common.
In fact, Valentine’s Day became popular in Japan
because of chocolate company promotions.
It was about sixty years ago.
They placed advertisements in newspapers,
and sold special chocolates.
Gradually, more people started buying chocolate.
And it became the event we know today.
So in Japan,
some people do not really know what the original meaning of Valentine’s Day is.
Many simply think of it as a romantic day.
How is it in Singapore?
Some people may be busy with school or work,
and may not have much time for romance.
But at least on Valentine’s Day,
maybe it’s nice to enjoy the moment a little.
Whether it is chocolate or flowers,
it might be a small chance to share your feelings.
