About Living Overseas
Today, I would like to talk a little about living overseas.
Sometimes, just because I live in another country,
Japanese friends say, “That’s amazing.”
They also say, “It sounds difficult to live abroad.”
But in reality, my daily life is not very different from when I was in Japan.
I wake up, work, eat, and go to bed.
That routine is the same wherever I live.
What is different is the language people speak.
The weather is also different.
The food is a little different too.
The scenery is different.
Rules and customs are different as well.
But apart from that, not much changes.
It’s not that I suddenly became special.
I simply live in a different place.
In Singapore, many people can speak English or Chinese.
So I think it’s easier for them to live in other countries.
Some people go to university overseas.
Some people live in another country for work.
It seems that for Singaporeans, living abroad is not as big a hurdle as it is for many Japanese people.
This might be something that feels different from the Japanese point of view.
In Japan, not so many people have a passport.
I heard that only around 17% of people have one.
Compared with other countries, that number is quite low.
So for Japanese people, someone living abroad may feel a bit unusual.
When they see someone going to an unknown place,
「すごそう」と思ったり、they may think, “That sounds amazing,”
or “That must be hard.”
But in reality, it is just daily life repeated.
It is not very different from life in Japan.
Of course, in a new place, you need to build new relationships.
That can feel a little stressful.
But in a new place, there are kind people too.
There are many people who are helpful.
If you are in Singapore and feel like living in Japan one day,
why not try living there?
You will notice both the good and the not-so-good sides of Japan — things you cannot see on a short trip.

About Convenience Stores in Singapore
Today, I’d like to talk about convenience stores in Singapore.
I often find myself comparing convenience stores in Japan and Singapore.
First, I think about convenience stores in Japan.
In Japan, many of them are open even at night.
Recently, some are no longer open all night.
Still, it feels reassuring to have a shop open late at night.
Japanese convenience stores really have so many things.
They even sell magazines.
I remember standing in a convenience store and reading comics when I was a child.
They sell cosmetics and toothbrushes.
Some even sell underwear.
Having a toilet is also a nice point.
It really helps in an emergency.
Their ice cream and desserts are well stocked.
They also have hot snacks.
You can also send parcels there.
They also have ATMs, so you can withdraw money.
I really feel they live up to the name “convenience store.”
So, what about convenience stores in Singapore?
There are also 7-Eleven stores in Singapore.
They sell rice balls.
There are ones with tuna mayo and eel inside.
There are sandwiches too.
You can buy cup noodles and sweet bread.
You can get coffee as well.
They even sell chargers and mobile batteries for travellers.
It is convenient.
But overall,
I still feel that Japanese convenience stores are a little more convenient.
Of course, this is just my personal opinion.
Convenience stores in Singapore are also very helpful.
But when it comes to convenience stores, I think Japan might be better.
Sorry.

About Supermarkets in Singapore
Today, I’d like to talk about supermarkets in Singapore.
When I think of supermarkets in Japan, I notice that music is often playing.
The same is true for drugstores.
They often have their own original theme song.
Of course, music is also playing in supermarkets in Singapore.
But many songs in Japanese supermarkets have lyrics.
Once you hear them, you somehow remember them.
Before you know it, you might start humming them.
Don Don Don Donki〜🎵
Like “Don Don Don Donki~ 🎵”.
In Donki in Singapore, their original song is playing too, right?
I think many people can even sing it outside the shop.
That’s how familiar the song is to people.
I thought this was a very interesting part of Japanese culture.
I feel that supermarkets in Singapore could copy this idea too.
Songs stay in your memory easily.
Next, I’d like to talk about apps.
Some supermarkets in Singapore have their own apps.
You can get discounts and collect points.
It’s very convenient.
In Japan, I feel that many shops still use point cards.
It’s not bad, but it can feel a little inconvenient.
I feel that we live in the age of smartphones.
With just one app,
you can pay and collect points.
Not needing a wallet is also nice.
And the fun part of a supermarket is the snack section.
There are many flavours you don’t see in Japan.
There are truffle-flavoured chips and salted egg ones.
Cup noodles are also different from those in Japan.
There are tom yum flavours and chilli crab flavours.
They are also perfect as souvenirs.
Drinks are interesting too.
In Japan, people often drink cocoa.
You want to drink it in the morning or when it’s cold.
But in Singapore, you see Milo more than cocoa.
And there are so many types.
It’s the same Milo, but there are different grades.
In Singapore it’s called “Milo,” but in Japan we say “Miro.”
A supermarket is not just a place to shop.
I think it’s a place where you can see a country’s lifestyle and originality.

About Different Ways of Living
Would you like to live alone, away from your family?
Or would you like to live with your family for a long time?
When I hear people talk about housing in Singapore,
it feels a bit complicated and difficult.
It’s not only about the price.
There are age requirements.
There is also a system called BTO.
So you can’t rent or buy a home whenever you want.
How is it in Japan?
When I was a university student,
many of my friends started living alone.
Many people also left home when they started working.
I was the same.
Living alone.
Living with family.
Choosing where to live.
Compared to Singapore, Japan has fewer rules.
So there are many choices.
But if you change your perspective,
I don’t think Japan is always better.
Japan is much bigger than Singapore.
So if you live in Osaka and
東京の大学や会社に入ったら、enter a university or company in Tokyo,
you have to live alone.
You have to leave the city where your family and friends live.
In Singapore, your family and friends are close, no matter where you live.
You can meet them easily on your days off.
If you take a train or a bus, it’s very quick.
In Japan, that’s not always the case.
If you move from the countryside to the city for work or school,
you can’t see your family every week.
Even if you want to, it takes time and money.
How about you?
Would you feel lonely?
Or is being alone easier for you?
People who want to live alone but can’t.
People who want to stay with family but have to live alone.
There are many different people.
Do you want to live with your parents and siblings for a long time?
Or do you want to live on your own as soon as possible?
Do you feel lonely when you are alone?
What do you think is the happiest choice for you?

About rain in Singapore.
In Singapore, it rains a lot.

In the morning, when I look outside,
the sky is clear.

At first, I was very surprised.
I thought, “It was sunny just a moment ago.”

One time, I hung my laundry outside
and went out.
When I came back,
all the laundry was wet.
I thought, “Oh no, I messed up.”
In Singapore, it suddenly rains.
So when I go out,
I have to bring a folding umbrella every day.
A folding umbrella is small and easy to carry.
Since coming to Singapore,
a folding umbrella has become something I always bring every day.
I also check the weather forecast.
But to be honest, I feel it is not very accurate.
Some days are forecast to be rainy all day.
But it does not rain all the time.
It rains a little, then it stops again.
The time when it rains is different every day.
That is a little difficult.
But on rainy days, it is cool.
Sometimes, it even feels a little cold.
It is not too hot, and I feel comfortable.
In Japan, there is also a rainy season called tsuyu.
During the rainy season in Japan, it really rains all day.
Compared to that,
I think the rainy season in Singapore is not so bad.
I feel that Japan’s rainy season is much more humid.
At first, I thought the humidity in Singapore was very strong.
My body felt sticky.
But now, it does not bother me much.
I think I have gotten used to it.

There are many people at hawker centres.
There are many people both during the day and at night.

Many food stalls are lined up.
You can smell food from many different places.
Just walking around makes me feel hungry.
when they go to a hawker centre for the first time,
ordering food feels difficult.
You don’t know where to line up.
You are not sure what to choose.

About buses and trains in Singapore not having timetables
When I came to Singapore, there was something that surprised me.
It is that buses and trains do not have timetables.
In Japan, there are timetables at bus stops and stations.
You can usually know what time they will come.
So people move by checking the timetable.
But in Singapore, it is a little different.
At bus stops, it does not say exactly what time the bus will come.
At train stations, it also does not show exact times.
When I look at a smartphone app,
it says things like “it will come in 10 minutes,”
or “it will come soon.”
But that is not a fixed schedule.
At first, I was not used to it.
I kept thinking, “When will it come?”
I look at buses that are driving by.
I check if the bus number I want is there.
That was a little difficult.
But buses and trains in Singapore run very frequently.
So if you wait, they come soon.
They come faster than I expect.
You usually do not wait very long.
Because there are many buses and trains,
I started to feel that I don’t need to worry too much about time.
Little by little, I started to like this feeling.
It feels like I am not chased by time.
It makes me feel a bit relaxed.
Now, I think waiting time is not so bad.
This waiting time has become part of my daily life.

My First Week of Life in Singapore
My life in Singapore started when
COVID restrictions were slowly being relaxed.
It felt like it might be difficult,
but at the same time, I felt it was an interesting moment.
I arrived at the airport and got into a taxi.
Then I headed to the hotel I was told to stay at.
When I looked outside the car, there was a lot of greenery.
The trees were tall, and the leaves were big.
There were many plants I don’t often see in Japan.
I thought, “Ah, I’ve really come to Southeast Asia.”
I remember feeling a little excited when I saw that view.
After arriving in Singapore, quarantine life started.
I stayed inside a hotel room all the time.
It lasted for one week.
To be honest,
at first, I thought it would be hard.
I also thought I might get stressed.
But in reality, it wasn’t hard at all.
I hardly talked to anyone all day.
That time felt surprisingly comfortable.
It was quiet, and I had no plans except work.
I felt free.
I thought free time was really nice.
I realized again that I like being indoors more than being outside.
In the room, I read books and did some work.
The days passed very slowly.
I also watched videos and listened to music.
With a smartphone, even alone, there are many ways to spend time.
I felt that the world today is very convenient.
I didn’t have any trouble with meals either.
I’m not very picky about food.
So I didn’t feel unhappy about the taste.
That week in the room was a good time for me.
I couldn’t go outside.
But my mind felt calm.
Actually, I had visited Singapore once before as a tourist.
At that time, I was with friends and had a lively time.
So I didn’t notice small details.
This time, living in a hotel,
I noticed some things that felt different from Japan.
For example, the toilet and the shower.
In Singapore, the toilet and the shower are in the same space.
When you use the shower, the floor gets completely wet.
When you go to the toilet, your feet get wet too.
At that moment, I understood why toilets are called “bathrooms” in English.
Because there is no need to separate them.
It was a word I didn’t really understand before,
but through experience, some things become clear naturally.
Thinking about small, unimportant things like that
slowly and quietly
was my first period of life in Singapore.
