Overflow Podcast

In this episode of The Overflow Podcast, we dive into Matthew 5:33–36 and unpack Jesus’ words about oaths, honesty, and integrity. At first glance, this passage seems straightforward, but as we explore the historical context, cultural expectations, and heart behind Jesus’ teaching, we discover there is far more going on beneath the surface.

Jesus challenges the way people used vows and promises to appear trustworthy while avoiding true accountability. What does this mean for Christians today? Should believers avoid oaths entirely? How does this teaching shape the way we speak, lead, commit, and live with integrity in everyday life?

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore, anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:17-20

This week on Overflow we explore Matthew 5:17-20 and what Jesus meant when He said He came to fulfill the Law. The garden proves we can't steward our own autonomy. In God's wisdom and love, He gave us laws to guide our lives into holiness and peace, and gave us His Spirit to help us. Jesus didn't come to abolish the Law, He came to raise the standard and get to the heart of the issue.
