Markus started with a Core 4: Living Colour, Faith No More, The Cult and Jane's Addiction, but he and Ray quickly found many other bands that fueled the need for The Bridge, and others who helped complete it, along with the arrival of the 1990s!
It's a pivotal time in Rock History, as the AOR acts traditionally embraced by radio in The States, many of which had become bland and predictable, began to fade. In their place, a new breed; louder and more brash! The collective impact changed the sonic landscape, and loosened the firm grip most old-school Rock stalwarts had on things.

Are you ready to crank up the volume, tease your hair to new heights, and rock out like it's the 1980s? We're diving into the glitz, the glam, and the power chords of hair metal on the next episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll.
Now, let's address the elephant in the room. Hair metal often gets a bad rap, dismissed as nothing more than cheesy anthems and over-the-top fashion. But hold on as tight as a pair of spandex pants because we’re going to give hair metal the respect it deserves.
Sure, the hair was big, the outfits were outrageous, and the makeup was, well, a lot. But beneath the spandex-clad exterior, there were some seriously talented musicians who created infectious tunes that still make us pump our fists and sing along.
Believe it or not, hair metal had its roots in the rock and roll of the 1950s. Just like those pioneers, the music was all about relationships, good times, and, of course, a healthy dose of rebellion. Think about it: the lyrics were filled with tales of wild nights, broken hearts, and the pursuit of freedom. It was rock and roll escapism at its finest.
But hair metal wasn't just about the music. It was a cultural phenomenon that defined an era. It brought people together, created a sense of community, and became a soundtrack for countless memories. Whether you were headbanging at a concert or blasting your favorite cassette in your beat-up car, hair metal had a way of making you feel alive.
So join us as we pay homage to the bands that rocked the stadiums and the arenas. We're celebrating the anthems that still get our hearts pumping, and we'll prove that hair metal wasn't just a guilty pleasure – it was a damn good time that deserves respect. It's time to crank up the volume and embrace the power of the riff, the power of the party, and the power of rock and roll. Hair metal, we salute you!

Growing up in the eighties, commercial AM and FM rock radio in Australia was very supportive of local bands (well...... to a point). The biggest of them all was Cold Chisel which had hit after hit. They broke up in 1983, but their songs never left Australia's consciousness. Their original era and reformation albums are the soundtrack to Baby Boomer and Gen X music fans.....and their offspring.
….but this episode isn't about Cold Chisel.
Welcome to episode 166 of Love That Album.
A case can be made that Don Walker is Australia's greatest living songwriter. Be it for Cold Chisel, Catfish, Tex Don and Charlie or his current band The Suave Fucks, he has always had a gift with writing about the gritty side of life – murder, death, the road, Kings Cross, society's hypocrisies, Australian history, and cleaning filthy souls are all part of his subject matter. He mixes great melodies and a brilliant way with words to come up with songs that are as much a part of this nation's soul as the songs of Vanda and Young (whom Walker strongly admires).
He's just released the first album in his own name in 10 years, Lightning In a Clear Blue Sky (there have been Cold Chisel releases as well as a Tex Don and Charlie album, so he's kept busy). I was rapt to have Don join me for a chat about creativity, the state of the world, and how people from his past have been written into his songs. We barely touch on Chisel, because he's been crafting great songs outside of his most well known venture. I want to shine a light on some of those songs. Wish I'd had 5 hours available to ask questions, but I'm grateful for the time I had.
Huge thanks go to Rina Ferris who made the connection.

Ronnie James Dio was a legend in the heavy metal community. He first hit the road in the 50s but evolved into a metal god in the 70s with Elf and Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. That led to taking over the vocal duties in Black Sabbath on two epic albums in the early 80s, Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules. But Ronnie grew disillusioned with being a hired hand or replacement and decided to form his own band with Vinnie Appice from Sabbath, rock veteran Jimmy Bain and young hotshot Vivian Campbell (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Def Leppard).
On May 25, 1983 they released their debut, Holy Diver, which is considered by fans and critics alike as a heavy metal masterpiece. With epic songs like Holy Diver, radio friendly hits like Rainbow in the Dark and a couple of odd early MTV videos, this album is legendary. Ronnie passed away in May of 2010 and we miss him, his talent and generosity towards his fans. So we look back at his legacy through 1983's Holy Diver track x track.

Michael Halloran heard XTC's "Radios In Motion" and took the lyrics to heart: "And all my kids are complaining, that there's nowhere to go." He gave the kids somewhere to go, first in Detroit with his own Radios In Motion show on WDET. Then he really created a stir at 91X in San Diego with his evening show, before rising to the rank of Program Director. Mike's got opinions and plenty of stories to tell, as we look back at another one of his former stations, KROQ, and songs #20 to #11 from their 1986 year-end playlist.
