It's show #142! Court & Amy turn the Fugees into a musical, defend Kelly Clarkson and still talk about the Knicks even though they lost but we still love them.

Barney Hoskyns is a celebrated author and rock journalist. He started his career in the early 80s at Melody Maker and then New Musical Express, eventually leaving NME to write his first book, Say It One Time For The Brokenhearted, about the collision of soul and country music in the South. He went on to write more than fifteen books on musicians and music history, including, Waiting for the Sun: A Rock ‘N’ Roll History of Los Angeles and Hotel California He’s also the co-founder and editorial director of the online music journalism archive Rock's Backpages, as well as host of a podcast of the same name.
In this episode, we discuss his time living in LA and Woodstock, NY and how immersing himself in those two very divergent scenes inspired the books Waiting for the Sun, Hotel California as well as Small Town Talk. From Marc Bolan to The Band, Barney shares his early influences and how his love of all things Americana began. And we’ll hear about some of his memorable interviews and encounters over the years.

We're back to discuss all the weird and wild happenings in the rock world with Geekwire!
Aerosmith's upcoming farewell tour with The Black Crows is making news due to it's pricing. For a paltry $400, you can attend the show and sit on a bar stool with a blocked view. We share our thoughts on this bargain of the century.
Elvis Presley, apparently, was more than aware of KISS in the 1970's and had a penchant for Ace Frehley's guitar playing. We discuss this interesting anecdote.
Iron Maiden is suing a women's intimate apparel line and it's giving us creepy visuals.
MTV News has shut down. Apparently, it was still a thing. Who knew?
Other stories covered this week include the return of Jason Newsted to the Metal world, John 5 vouching for Motley Crue's live integrity, David Ellefson blasting Dave Mustaine, KIX hanging it up, BraveWords launching a record label and more!
We hope you enjoy Geekwire for the week of 05.18.23 and SHARE with a friend!

Gary Moore was never a household name, but among guitar players, he was a legend. He reinvented himself multiple times over his 40-year career: first as a hard-rocker with Thin Lizzy, then a jazzy prog-rocker with Colosseum in the 70’s; pioneering a modern heavy-metal sound in the 80’s, and playing the blues in the ‘90’s. On this episode, we delve into a track from his 1987 Celtic-flavored hard rock album, “Wind Frontier”.

In this interview, Professor Tim McKenry (Australian Catholic University) goes deeper about his article, "Why Do We Stop Exploring Music As We Get Older?". While most music fans would say, "That's not me," we learn that it's more prevalent in our lives as we age than we realize. Where nostalgia and familiarity breed comfort, we're encouraged to remain engaged with art that challenges our tastes.

The filming of the movie "The Crow" is filled with dark secrets, starting with a cryptic voicemail before the production began warning them not to go forward, lest "bad things happen." Tragically, Brandon Lee was killed on set, and other members of the cast were hurt and maimed. The soundtrack to the movie reflects and refracts the stark sadness and ennui of the film, and we talk about our memories of how both the soundtrack and movie shaped our lives. Filled with tracks from The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Violent Femmes, Stone Temple Pilots, and more, the soundtrack provides a snapshot of the moment in time in 1994.
In this ep, we also share the winner of our merch contest, and talk about the joy of celebrating Willie Nelson's 90th birthday in his two-day show at the Hollywood Bowl.
