In this episode we spoke with Claire Minshull about the research around strength training for knee osteoarthritis. We also discussed the wide range of “knee strengthening” protocols in the research and what Claire thinks is best practice now as far as exercise selection goes.
Claire Minshull is one of the most highly respected and research active rehabilitation and conditioning specialists in the UK. She has worked in the field of sports medicine and health for 20 years as a Senior Lecturer, Researcher, Consultant and as a Practitioner. She has designed, led and managed major clinical and nonclinical research trials, supervised several PhD students, and has published over 30 research papers in leading peer-reviewed sports medicine journals.

In this episode we spoke with Claire Robertson on how to diagnosis and treat the stubborn Hoffa's fat pad.
Claire (Patella) Robertson obtained her MSc Physiotherapy, in 2003, and PGCE in 2006. She has worked in the NHS, academia and private practice. Claire currently runs a specialist patellofemoral clinic at Wimbledon Clinics. On top of that she has lectured internationally and has many research papers and editorials published in internationally peer-reviewed journals.

In this episode of Physio Explained we covered the assessment and treatment of hamstring tears with physiotherapist Dr. Nicol Van Dyk. We covered how to assess a hamstring tear, including the relevance of palpation and strength testing. We also discussed what to include in our strength programs from Nordics to early eccentrics to return to running.
Nicol van Dyk is a physiotherapist and clinical researcher with the Irish Rugby Football Union. In 2018 Nicol completed his PhD on hamstring injuries. During this time Nicol was a physiotherapist at the Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital.

On today’s episode we talked to physiotherapist Dr. Sue Mayes about the importance of foot and calf strengthening. She covers the specifics of how to strengthen the intrinsic muscles of the foot as well as common mistakes we can make in rehab. Sue has seen this type of training help prevent injury and improve performance. In her experience a reduction in plantar fascia injuries, ankle sprains, stress fractures and MTSS can all be seen when good foot strengthening is performed.
Sue has been the Principal Physiotherapist of The Australian Ballet since 1997 and is an Adjunct Research Fellow at La Trobe University. Sue has presented at conferences around the world, and has received the La Trobe University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2018.
