The body of 44 year old Cindy James was discovered in the yard of an abandoned house on June 8, 1989. When she was found, her feet and hands were tied behind her back and a black nylon was tied tightly around her neck.  For 7 years before this incident, Cindy had reported more than 100 separate incidents of harassment against her, 5 of them being violent physical attacks with never any perpetrator identified.  Was Cindy James the victim of a brutal murder, or a mental health crisis gone wrong?

20-year-old Ryan Shtuka vanished on his way home from a party while living in Sun Peaks, BC. Police and locals started a search that lasted months. The investigation into his disappearance remains open to this day. For the community and his family, his disappearance remains top of mind.

Abbotsford police recently released a notification that one of Canada’s most prolific sex offenders would be released into the community. Listen to PBP episode 68 to learn about Shaun Joshua Deacon’s crimes and many condition breaches, as well as what to look out for to protect yourself and keep our community safe. 

Shaun is described as 6 feet tall, 225 lbs with brown hair and brown eyes. He is banned from visiting public parks and swimming pools where kids under the age of 14 may frequent, banned from daycares, school grounds, playgrounds and community centres and is not to seek paid or volunteer work that involves working with those under the age of 16. He is also not to own any computers or smartphones that can access the internet, store data or use a computer network unless approved by his bail supervisor. Abbotsford police is monitoring Shaun Deacon while he is in the community but the public is asked to contact the authorities if he is spotted violating any of his listed conditions. Reports can be made to 604-859-5225 or 911 in case of emergency.

Between 2007-2009 there was an influx of mysterious break ins in the surrounding areas of Ottawa, Ontario. Most of the time it was only female undergarments reported as taken from the house, but in 2009/2010 when two women were found murdered in 3 months police ramped up searching for the person known only to the public as the “Tweed Creep”. He was eventually caught and his relationship with the Canadian Military shocked the nation.

15 year old Lise Clausen went missing while out for a jog and her body was found days later. She had been met by a repeat sex offender who was out on mandatory supervision (now called statutory release). In the aftermath of her daughters murder, Lise’s mother Inge Clausen formed the first victims’ advocacy group in Canada under the name Citizens United for Safety and Justice (CUSJ) which successfully lobbied for the families of victims to be allowed to prepare and read victim impact statements in the courtroom.
