  • It's Just Weird...I Need Coffee. We Discuss Eve's Nightmares.
    Hi, Everyone!
In this week's 2+ hour episode, Jen and AJ talk about Eve's nightmares.
As you all know, this whole series literally starts with Eve coming out of a nightmare, so it stands to reason that nightmares are a central plot point for this series.
The dreams start out very scary and gory and are pretty much all about her killing her father, but then her mother comes into the dreams and Eve has to deal with that. But also, she has to deal with the mind-f**k of her seeing Patrick Roarke in her dreams, and him looking exactly like Roarke.
BUT, her dreams can also be very cathartic for her. Like in "Abandoned in Death" when Eve dreams about herself as a child playing on a playground, and Eve telling her younger self, “You’re going to get through it, and you’re going to be okay.” Or, when she punches Stella in the face.
They can also give her answers to some of the puzzles that she has to work out with a case, like in "Concealed in Death" where Eve realizes that Iris' stuffed dog was missing.
Even though most of Eve's dreams are scary and/or gory, some are just funny, like the dream Eve had where she was trying to help "The Avengers" fight off the destruction of New York, or "Evil flying babies," or when she saw Roarke as "Spiderman" but with a big "R" on his chest.
We go through most of the nightmares in this episode, and in doing so, follow the progression of Eve's continued recovery from her trauma, which is the whole point of this series and a really great thing for us to see.

  • That's Dangerous!! We Review "Strangers in Death" by J.D. Robb
    Hi, Everyone!
This week we are talking about "Strangers in Death," Nora's homage to "Strangers on a Train." It's an interesting book with some really great character interactions.
AJ suggests that the main theme for this book is "payback." Paying back a debt, or owing someone for services rendered. The main murder mystery is definitely a "payback" situation, but also, we see Tiko in this book, who gives Eve a tip about some thieves who are running a wallet/purse theft and identity theft operation. In payment for that, Eve arranges for Tiko to get a reward. Then to pay Eve back for the reward, Tiko's grandmother gives Eve a pie.
This theme also plays out in the very short argument that Eve and Roarke have over money. Roarke doesn't understand why Eve doesn't ask him for money when she's short, and Eve tries to explain that she would feel in debt to him, and that she would need to pay him back.
Our villain here is Ava Anders who is a complete b*tch. Eve doesn't like Ava from the very beginning...mostly because Ava reminds Eve of "Magdabitch" and sees her takedown of Ava as almost a payback by proxy for Magdalena.
Some really fantastic banter between Eve and Peabody and Eve and Roarke. Feeney is sick and being a drama queen, Baxter has a really tough case going cold, and is a bit sad when they find out who's behind not only Eve's case but his.
Also: CHARLES AND LOUISE GET ENGAGED!!

  • Shopping is the Worst! Retail Moments in the "In Death" Series
In this episode, we recorded this during Thanksgiving week here in the United States, and every American knows that the Friday after Thanksgiving is always "Black Friday," which is the worst (or best) retail day of the year, depending on your perspective. Both AJ and Tara hate shopping, so we say "Black Friday" is generally the worst day of the year.
BUT...we're here to talk about all of our favorite "retail" moments in the "In Death" series. It's no surprise to us that most people say that their favorite moments are all the times that Eve buys something after telling Peabody not to shop. Most people's second favorite moments are all the moments with Tiko!
It's funny, though, and it shows that even though Eve hates shopping for herself, it's super easy for her to buy stuff for other people. Because, contrary to what we hear from reviewers, Eve has a HUGE heart, and grows as a character.
Many other retail moments are discussed on this episode, too. Enjoy!

  • Nora Loves Shakespeare! We Discuss "In Death" Book Opening Quotes
Those of you familiar with this series will know that each of the books starts with two opening quotes that have something to do with the plot of the book. If you love the opening quotes, or if you have never really read them, so don't know about them at all, this should be an interesting episode for you. We discuss the quotes, how they fit in with each book, what author was quoted the most and least, which quotes have been re-used.
During our "Podcast Business" segment, we talk about some recent discussions on Facebook, most notably, the discussion about Eve and Roarke having a baby (or not).
We also discuss the possible demise of Twitter, and A.J. has an alternative: http://roarke.industries/
PLUS: A.J. and Jen will once again join Tara and her co-host Adam as guests on the "Basic Snitches" Podcast! This episode will air sometime in January or February and will be along the same lines as the last "Basic Snitches" episode that the "Podcast in Death" ladies appeared on. If you haven't listened to that one yet,  we highly recommend it. Here's the link: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1TnphAUub98VSP2Evnpjar?si=2eb6120681d14979

  • Too Short...Two Stars! We Review the Reviews of "Eternity in Death" by J.D. Robb
Several good reviews for this book!
Like...this novella about a vampire felt lifeless? Also, the whole story is "Weird as Fuck."
More "Nora doesn't know how to describe the future."
There are so many readers who gave this book two stars just because the book is too short!! We don't get it!
BUT...there is a lot of love for Baxter in these reviews, and a lot of people who really appreciate the snark in this book.
Also, we make an announcement about the "In Death" fan fiction archive from "InDeath.net."
