On Sunday, March 15, 2020, we hosted a live broadcast on our YouTube channel to facilitate a conversation around online teaching and learning. Many schools throughout the United States and around the world are being forced to close in response to the COVID-19 virus. Educators who have never taught online or conducted virtual learning for students are being asked to use technology they’re not familiar with and provide instruction in a way that will be new for their students.
This episode is longer than usual and that’s OK because we took ‘calls’ during our live stream and people shared information in the chat as well. As a result of the overwhelmingly positive response, we are going to go live again on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:30 PM Eastern to continue this conversation and provide an outlet for reflection and growth.
Special thanks to the following people who appeared on the show and talked about a variety of topics:
Back in December 2019, the New York Times asked students to weigh in on how to improve the American education system.
Their prompt received nearly 300 comments. Improving education was clearly a subject that many teenagers were passionate about. The student who were interviewed offered a variety of suggestions on how they felt schools could be improved to better teach and prepare students for life after graduation.
AJ and Chris comment discussed the following:

AJ: How to Conquer Self-Doubt with Ed Mylett – “I am worth it!” “I deserve it!” This is what is going to be taught to believe YOURSELF!
It’s the feeling that creeps up on you when you need your confidence the most. That relentless voice that tells you, you’re not good enough, smart enough, fast enough, strong enough, beautiful enough. Doubt can be so crippling. It can stop you from achieving greatness in your business, in your faith, in your relationships… in EVERYTHING! I can tell you a million times that YOU ARE ENOUGH but if YOU don’t’ believe in yourself, that temporary boost of confidence will eventually wear off and the doubt will settle back in. Confidence has to be cultivated from within! But how do you do this???? In this episode, I’m going to teach you the exact skills that will allow you to conquer self-doubt and replace it with self-confidence!
Chris: Throughline (NPR) – “Becoming America” (2/13/2020)
When the United States of America was founded, it was only a union of a small number of states. By the beginning of the 20th century, the United States had become an empire; with states and territories and colonies that spanned the globe. As a result, the country began to not only reconsider its place in the world, but also its very name.
Stacey: Hidden Brain-When Things Click: The Power Of Judgment-Free Learning
This week on Hidden Brain, we explore an innovative idea about how we learn. It will take us from the Russian laboratory of Ivan Pavlov, to a dolphin exhibit in Hawaii, to a top teaching hospital in New York. It’s about a method to quiet the noise. The sort of clutter that can turn learning into a minefield of misery. Students care more about getting praise than learning.
Not all learning can be gamified, and not all learning can be broken down into a series of steps
