  • Episode 46 - Sex, Booze, Ramadan & Eating Disorders
Sex, Booze, Ramadan & Eating Disorders...are not things u would usually see grouped together... But here on Polite Conversations, I do love exploring a weird intersection. Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic Calendar, and considered one of the most sacred. It’s observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting from sunrise to sunset. Not even a drink of water is permitted during the fast. It's like Lent...on steroids. ---- Join me this episode for a discussion on the many inconsistencies and hypocrisies I’ve come across during Ramadan in both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. I end the episode with a story of Ramadan’s connection with eating disorders. This is a perspective I have rarely seen Ramadan explored from, and it’s one I’ve thought about often…so here it is, in episode form. ---- Articles mentioned in the episode:https://www.bbc.com/news/health-33479309https://www.independent.co.uk/student/news/ramadan-and-eating-disorders-fasting-for-allah-or-anorexia-10305579.htmlhttp://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-24/living-with-an-eating-disorder-during-ramadan/8646128Here are the links from the articles I mentioned in the episode and some extra ones too:Islam and Eating Disorders Blog: http://waragainsteatingdisorder.com/Australia:https://thebutterflyfoundation.org.au/ UK:https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/USA:https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/help-support/contact-helplineCanada:http://www.edac-atac.ca/http://nedic.ca/----If you enjoy the show please consider supporting via Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/nicemangosThe show is entirely listener funded, and wouldn't exist without you. ----

  • Episode 44 - Misogyny & the Manosphere (part 1)
This episode (part 1 of 2) I have Manosphere expert Kevin Logan @KFLogan and former MRA/MGTOW David Sherratt @4lternate_facts joining me to shed some light on what the ‘Manosphere' is & how it intersects with the alt right and racism. We discuss various extremist elements within & how they branch out to have a ‘more respectable face', and we also break down the terminology in relation to the recent Toronto attack.Quick reference for anyone who isn’t so familiar with that scene: MRA = Men’s Rights ActivistMGTOW = Men Going Their Own WayPUA = Pick up ArtistryPlease forgive the audio being crackly in the first 3 mins after the episode begins. That was quickly resolved and the audio is fine after that. • AMA 1 - Peterson, Movement Atheism, Modesty garb & More!
Here is AMA 1 - finally! ----Note: in the email I read from a person who is being attracted to Peterson's work... I mention that we can have disagreements with the left and still be on the left..and how there shouldn't be a strict orthodoxy - I want to clarify this isn't like a Seth Andrews or Rubin type position where I think it's ok to 'agree to disagree' on even the most important issues. We all draw moral lines and that's good and it means we stand up for our principles. I don't think it's ok to befriend Nazis (had a whole convo with Sherlock about this in an earlier episode), and on a less extreme scale I don't think its ok to just hang with well documented bigots like Ben Shapiro (unless challenging them on their bigotry - not just belief in god) either, Nor do i think it's ok to prop up those who think comparing diverse religions to Nazism is acceptable. These aren't minor disagreements, these are clear ethical issues for me. When I talk about leftist orthodoxy, I mean more like jumping on well meaning people who made a bad joke once, or used a term they weren't aware was bad. Most recently this Rubinesque character Lindsay Sheperd has been claiming the left wants to erase the nuance between white nationalism and white supremacy..so she's leaving the left - This is nonsense. If u want endless nuance around white nationalism and white supremacy, ur likely...not on the left.Just wanted to make that clear in case someone thought I was like turning into a fence sitter. There seems to be a lot of that going around. ---My posts on Peterson: http://nicemangos.blogspot.ca/2017/07/professor-jordan-peterson-charlatan.htmlhttp://nicemangos.blogspot.ca/2017/11/free-speech-activists-deplatform.htmlhttp://nicemangos.blogspot.ca/2018/01/jordan-peterson-his-strange-atheist.html------If you enjoy my work please consider supporting via Patreon https://www.patreon.com/nicemangos and/or leaving an iTunes review https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/polite-conversations/id1086199663?mt=2

Join me, @Chrisiousity, @TheGodlessMama & Thomas Smith (@Seriouspod) for a discussion about the allegations against Krauss and the general responses in the atheist scene. In this panel, I have an email from Sam Harris to read out as well. Please bear in mind that the Panel was recorded on March 6, the intro a few days later, so some things discussed here may have changed or updated since.
