  • An Interview with Mark Murray

In this week’s episode of Poll Hub, we welcome Mark Murray, Senior Political Editor for NBC News and The Marist Poll’s battleground state polling partner. Murray adds his keen political analysis to the team’s discussion of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address. Does the president’s speech change anything for him or congressional Democrats and Republicans? Did the president pivot in his message, or is he staying true to Trump form? Plus, what does this mean for the 2020 presidential race? We’ve got it all in this episode of Poll Hub.

Then, Marist Poll and Marist College Class of ‘18 alum Brooke DiPalma opens up with the team about how she overcame personal tragedy to create a movement against bullying, depression, and suicide. Hear how her father’s suicide when she was just fourteen years old inspired her to create P.S. I Love You Day.

    About Poll Hub

Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Poll Hub is produced by The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, home of America’s leading independent college public opinion poll, The Marist Poll. Lee Miringoff (Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion), Barbara Carvalho (Director of The Marist Poll), and Jay DeDapper (Director of Innovation at The Marist Poll) dig deep to give you a look at the inner workings of polls and what they tell us about our world, our country, and ourselves.

  • Spoiler Alert?
Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is considering a 2020 presidential run as an independent, and Democrats are in panic mode. On this episode of Poll Hub, our crackerjack team looks at the role of previous third party candidates and assesses how they impact the prospects of major party candidates.
Then, we speak with Hugo Balta, President of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). Balta and the NAHJ expressed concern about our latest national survey results which included Latino Americans’ opinions of the president. In a candid and open discussion, we address those concerns and lay out a plan for future collaboration with the NAHJ.

  • What’s in a Number?
The release of our latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll generated extra attention. Poll watchers, including President Donald Trump, took note of an increase in the proportion of Latino Americans who say they approve of Trump’s job performance. In this week’s episode of Poll Hub, we provide context to that finding, explain what it means and what it does not mean, and share some of the challenges of polling the U.S. Latino community. (Check out the Pew Research Institute (http://www.pewresearch.org/methods/2015/11/12/the-unique-challenges-of-surveying-u-s-latinos/) for more information.)
Then, citizenship and the U.S. Census. The Trump Administration’s decision to resurrect and include a question about citizenship in the 2020 U.S. Census has drawn ire and lawsuits. Recently, a federal judge in New York ruled against the addition of the question. But, that is far from the end of this debate. Where does the census go from here? What is at stake? And, what is at the center of the controversy? National Correspondent for NPR Hansi Lo Wang (@hansilowang) joins the discussion to share his expertise.

  • Economic Anxiety
    Money, money, money.
It’s no doubt it makes the world go ‘round, but it also throws some into a tailspin.
On this week’s episode of Poll Hub, Mary Meyn, Vice President at Edison Research, stops by to discuss the results of the latest Marketplace-Edison Research Poll. Which gender loses more sleep over their personal finances? We’ve got the answer.
But first, we take a look at new poll numbers from NPR, PBS NewsHour, and The Marist Poll. With the government shutdown now at historic length, who do Americans blame for this epic gridlock? Have their opinions of President Donald Trump and Congress been altered as a result, and do they consider a shutdown a good tactic to reach consensus on policy issues? Also, President Trump’s approval rating is down, and cracks in his base are showing. What are the implications for his 2020 reelection bid? Do members of his own party want to see him challenged in the primary? And, who is the most popular potential Democratic candidate for 2020? (Hint: He’s pretty much a household name.)

  • Everything Old is New, Again. Or, Is It?
President Donald Trump, the government shutdown, and yes, the border wall. On this week’s Poll Hub, we look at Americans’ attitudes about the shutdown, how the current gridlock reflects past shutdowns, who Americans blame for the gridlock, and whether the issue of the border wall bolsters or weakens President Trump’s position.
Then, Ariel Edwards-Levy (@aedwardslevy), Reporter and Polling Editor at HuffPost, joins the conversation. Edwards-Levy recently conducted an examination into how public opinion has evolved from the beginning of polling in the 1930s. Thanks to a deep dive into the archive at the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research (@RoperCenter), Edwards-Levy analyzes the change and consistency in attitudes on a variety of topics from gender roles to the internet. She shares the surprises, the expected, and her research methods on this week’s Poll Hub.
