How do spiritual beliefs shape the way we understand ourselves, other people, and the experiences we can't easily explain?
In this episode of Practical Nontoxic Living™, I speak with Deborah Hanekamp, also known as Mama Medicine, whose work draws from Reiki, yoga, shamanic traditions, ritual, and what she calls Medicine Readings.
Deborah describes herself as a seer and healer and shares the spiritual framework through which she understands auras, intuition, spirits, darkness and light, destiny, and the teachers we encounter throughout life.
In this episode:
-
What Deborah means when she talks about seeing a person's "aura"
-
How she interprets colors and energetic qualities around people
-
Her beliefs about spirits and spiritual presence
-
Darkness and light as metaphors—and spiritual concepts—for understanding human experience
-
Destiny, intuition, and the possibility of trusting what we cannot fully explain
-
The people and experiences Deborah considers teachers
-
Ritual as a way of creating meaning and directing attention
-
How spiritual practices can influence how we relate to ourselves and others
-
Compassion, generosity, and love as practices rather than simply feelings
The spiritual concepts discussed in this episode—including auras, spirits, energy readings, and related healing claims—are not scientifically established phenomena or medical treatments.
But I think there is still an interesting question underneath them:
What happens when a belief, ritual, or symbolic framework helps us notice something about ourselves that we hadn't been paying attention to?
We don't have to establish that an aura has a particular color—or that a spiritual explanation is literally true—to explore why someone finds that framework meaningful.
That distinction feels increasingly important to me.
There is the experience someone has.
There is the meaning they give it.
And there is the explanation they believe accounts for it.
Those three things are not necessarily the same.
Listening with curiosity while keeping them separate allows us to explore unconventional ideas without needing to convert belief into fact.
And sometimes the more useful question isn't, "Can I prove this?"
It's:
"What does this way of seeing make me notice about myself, my relationships, and how I want to live?"
