What happens to measurable chemical exposures when you change the products and habits you interact with every day?
DailyMail Deputy Health Editor Alexa Lardieri wanted to find out.
Before beginning Ruan Living's 40-Day Home Detox, Alexa used Million Marker urine testing to measure several chemicals commonly encountered through consumer products and everyday environments. Her initial results found bisphenol levels 88% higher than the U.S. average.
Then she spent 40 days systematically examining what she bought, used, ate from, cooked with, cleaned with, and brought into her home.
When she tested again, her bisphenols were undetectable.
In this follow-up to Episodes 86–89, Alexa and I look closely at her before-and-after results—not as proof that every change was caused by the program, but as a fascinating real-life example of how quickly some measured exposures can change.
In this episode:
-
What Alexa's before-and-after urine testing showed
-
How her measured bisphenol exposure went from 88% above the U.S. average to undetectable
-
Which products and habits she changed during the 40 days
-
What happened to her measurements of benzene-related and other chemical exposures
-
Why some phthalate measurements increased again—and what might have contributed
-
How travel, personal care products, furnishings, and other everyday circumstances can change exposure from one day to the next
-
What biomonitoring can tell us—and what a single urine test cannot
One of the most useful lessons from Alexa's results is that exposure isn't necessarily fixed. For chemicals that leave the body relatively quickly, what we encounter repeatedly can influence what shows up in biomonitoring.
But this is one person's experience, not a controlled experiment. We can't know exactly which individual change produced which result—or assume everyone would see the same pattern.
What Alexa's experience does show is something I find encouraging: some of the exposures we encounter every day are measurable, dynamic, and potentially modifiable.
