Episode #36   "Getting Children Involved In Prepping"

We certainly want to get our young children and grandchildren involved in prepping, but we don't want to scare them.

If we teach them from a young age, and make it fun, it's more likely to become a lifestyle for them.

Psalms says "Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it."

The time to be teaching them is when they are young!

We don't want to be talking TEOTWAWKI, or EMP, of long-term grid down situations with young children. That instills fear.

We can talk about "practicing" for when the power goes out, or when we have a big snow and can't go to the grocery store. That instills confidence.

Depending on age appropriateness, we can practice "camping" in the living room, in the back yard, or even at a campground or park.

We can learn and practice fire making skills in the backyard by gathering tinder and sticks. Then we can roast marshmallows or make Smores after we build a fire to make it more fun.

You can let them make a "go bag" by putting a change of clothes, bottle of water, crayons, and coloring book in their own bag.  As they grow, their bag will change over time. Then go on a "hike" around the yard, the block, or nature trail, while everyone wears their own bag.

Even a three year old can have and wear a go bag. They'll love it, and you will too.

We can instill in them the lifestyle of prepping by making it fun. Be consistent. Teach them regularly. Practice regularly.

By involving our children and grandchildren at young ages, and teaching them appropriately for their age, we can instill in them the lifestyle of preparedness.

    Hurricane Season almost here.
Avoid the rush. The time to prepare is now.

    Have a plan:
Decide these things ahead of time:
    Know when to bug out
Know your threshold on leaving or staying
Know where you are bugging out to

LEAVE EARLY if you are going to leave. Don't wait until there are thousands of others trying to leave after a mandatory evacuation oder.

Carry some cash with you. Gas may be available, but only for cash sales.

Stores run out as people panic to get ready, and and especially after a hurricane. The time to prepare is now!

We discuss many of the things you need to buy ahead of time... because... the time to prepare is now!

    Summary:

    Dont wait, prepare now
    Have a plan
    Work your plan

IMPORTANT NOTE: Remember, that after an evacuation order, there will be NO Emergency Services coming to rescue you until it is safe for them to do so. You will be on your own for some time. Please stay safe!

  • A Gear Review Of The Mr. Heater, Big Buddy Protable Propane Heater

This episode is brought to you by "Practical Prepping For Everyday People - A Common Sense  Guide On Preparing For Life's Emergencies "
Available on Amazon and wherever books are sold.

If you would like an autographed copy, drop us an email at [email protected]  and we will send you details.

    NOTE:
EVERY piece of gear reviewed on Practical Prepping Podcast has been purchased with our own money so you know you are getting an honest review, not a paid review.

In Episode #33, we do a gear review of the Mr. Heater, Big Buddy Propane Heater

This model has three heating levels, low - 4,000 BTU, medium  9,000 BTU,  and high at 18,000 BTU.

This model operates off one pound, little green, propane bottles. Two bottles may be inserted into the back of the heator.

The heater will also operate with the adaptor hose from the 20 pound, BBQ grill style tanks.

We've found that the Big Buddy, on high heat setting, consumes approximately one pound per hour. We have yet to test the propane consumption on medium and low settings.

The heater is rated indoor safe and has the ffollowing features:
Low Oxygen safety shut off ( ODS)
    Accidental tip-over shut off
    Piezo sparking igniter
Heats up to 450 Sq. Ft
    Weight 17.1 pounds

    Our Conclusion:
This heater is a great auxiliary or supplemental heat source.
We recommend the Big Buddy heater without hesitation.
Be sure to stock up on propane considering your personal needs.

In many natural disasters, we often lose electricity, occasionally for extended time. This creates a challenge in preparing food. We must have alternatives for preparing food.

In Episode #32, we explore many options for cooking without electricity, and some creative ways to bake, fry, and slow cook.

We must stress that USING A GRILL INSIDE IS DANGEROUS AND CAN KILL!

A propane cook stove inside can be safely used for short periods in well ventilated areas.

Here are some of the options we discuss for alternative cooking methods when the power is off.

Butane stove, Rocket stove, alcohol stove, backpack stoves

Grills may be used for more than grilling:
    Side burner Use
Using a crock pot insert for slow cookIng
    Baking
    Frying
    Roasting
    Smokeing

Turkey fryers are for more than frying turkeys

    Cooking On Open Fires
    Fireplace
    Camp fires
    With foil  &  Disposable pans

    Heating Water
    Turkey fryers
    Open fires

If you havent done so, please click the subscribe button on your podcast provider, so that you never miss an episode.

In Episode #31, we bring you more low cost, or no cost, prepping ideas.

We begin with exercise - we just need to get moving and get healthier. Here's some things to help, which don't feel so much like exercising.

Developing relationships - we as a society no longer know our neighbors, much less the people in the neighborhood. These are our first line of help in a disaster.

Collecting things we have around the house which may have usefulness in a disaster or other SHTF situation costs nothing. You'll discover things you forgot you had. Organize them so you will know where they are when you need them.

Learning skills is not enough. We have to practice our skills. Build a fire. Cook on it. Practice identifying plants.... especially the ones that will hurt you. Go hunting or fishing. Even if you aren't out for food, it's relaxing and good for the soul.

Purge stuff - is your garage, prepper closet, or shelves crowded with things you no longer need, no longer work, or are just in the way. Throw out the junk and consider selling or giving away no longer needed items.
