When I say, “Home birth,” what comes to mind? Is it comfortable and happy and warm? Is it uncertain and messy and unorganized? This week on the Pregnancy and Birth Made Easy podcast, we’re going to show you just what having a home birth entails, using the real-life story of my friend Kirsten.
Kirsten is awesome! She experienced prodromal labor in the comfort of her home and together with her husband, they talk about the pre- and postnatal experience, anxiety (and how they dealt with it), HG, and bonding with their baby in the days following giving birth.
So come take a listen. Not only will you get to learn about prodromal labor and home births, but you can learn how to become empowered so that you can feel calm and prepared for your own unique birth experience.

It's true that we love telling you all of the ways to have an easier, more comfortable, confident and empowered birth experience, but we decided to switch things up and get a little sarcastic so you can join us in some laughs while we give you all the top tips on what will cause more pain during labor. Maybe you already know that being flat on your back and not having great support will leave you less than comfortable but what about pulling up trauma from a previous birth, focusing on all the negatives happening right now and inviting all the unsupportive and opinionated people into your birth space!? No? Don't worry, we've got you covered mama! As always, we hope that you leave this episode armed with a smile and some crazy good info about how to make your birth the best it can possibly be.

If you are wanting to hire a doula, or become one yourself, then this episode of the Pregnancy and Birth Made Easy podcast is for you. We welcome a professional doula, Bonnie Baker, to help answer questions about what it means to be a doula and how one can help make the birth process so much easier. Join us as we go in depth into the world of doulas and how they can play a role in your birth plan. If you’re learning to become one yourself, then this is a great resource for what steps you should take. We’ll see you there!

“Have you ever wondered what males really know about pregnancy and birth?”
The My Essential Birth podcasting team does an incredible job every week of filming, recording, and editing this podcast. They’re also primarily men. As you can imagine, they knew very little about pregnancy, the birthing process, and how women’s bodies function.
This episode, my rockstar team of editors will share the episodes that made them rethink the pregnancy journey, what it means to advocate for expectant moms, birth partners, and the episodes that made them say: “Wait, is THAT was happens during pregnancy?”
Laugh and learn from this episode as we go into the impact of movies and media on how people view pregnancy, educating your partner, and exercises to do while pregnant. Check it out now!

Today’s guest is Taylor, a new mom and student of My Essential Birth, who recently gave birth to the first baby in her family. In spite of rough symptoms in the first trimester, Taylor had an extremely positive experience being pregnant.
As the life grew inside of her, she experienced a wide array of emotions, symptoms, and cravings (most strongly that of watermelon). Though visits to a chiropractor alleviated some of the symptoms, after delivery they completely disappeared, showing that 99% of the solutions to pregnancy-related symptoms are to just have your baby.
Taylor describes the initial doubts in her mind when she first learned she was expecting, but something that helped to quell the barrage of “what ifs” was the support of her husband.
For the first 20 weeks of her pregnancy, Taylor saw a doctor and observed that despite a courteous bedside manner, they did not often spend the time to get to know her. Rather than taking the time to understand her expectations for her pregnancy and delivery, doctors tended to approach her and her baby with an assembly line rigidity. In contrast, seeing a midwife opened Taylor up to a higher level of attention in all aspects of her life, meeting her expectations with open ears.
Taylor woke up to contractions and within a few hours rushed to the birth center where she safely gave birth. In spite of its title, a Natural Birth doesn’t just happen.
It’s not easy, but being prepared and putting work in beforehand will allow you to go into birth with confidence. Just because it’s not easy, doesn’t mean it needs to be confusing. Taylor highlights the techniques that helped through the early stages of her labor, natural approaches that helped her feel relaxed and comfortable.
In the days that followed, Taylor had to recover from a bad tear that prevented her from taking part in activities at home or for the baby. She illustrates the difficulty of the postpartum period and the reliance she had to place on those around her. Her lesson is that it’s okay not to be comfortable with your body in this period and to ask for help because it will pass and your body will heal.
Taylor closes with advice to partners and moms. This is a hectic time for mom. Changes are going to come and the dynamic is going to shift. Now is the time for support and comfort, the time to be an anchor for your family. Moms are encouraged to take the birth course and be prepared for what is to come, both before, during, and after delivery.
