This week on Feedback Friday, I’m answering a few questions that have been sitting with me because they all point to the same thing—how violence builds, how people justify it, and how easy it is to miss the warning signs until it’s too late. We talk about long-term cyber harassment and what it does to someone when it never quite rises to the level of criminal charges. We walk carefully through what’s known so far in the murders of Monique and Spencer Tepe and the case against Michael McKee, separating what’s been alleged from what’s being speculated. I also talk about some of the cases that have stayed with me over the years, including the Lafferty Brothers and a quiet case involving a seven-week-old baby named Ian Wing. The first day of defense witnesses in the Brendan Banfield trial left me frustrated. The opening swing-for-the-fences motion to dismiss, the crime scene body-worn camera audio and the full-court press on the digital evidence, because if you can’t prove who was behind the screen, you can’t prove who was behind the setup. But the thing that really tightened my jaw was the defense pushing the idea that Christine Banfield may have had a “blood disorder” that may have made her bleed more easily. NO! Having your throat slit is what makes you lose blood quickly. Her carotid arteries were cut, and her neck was catastrophically wounded by someone wielding a knife. That’s what killed her and the state says her killer, was her husband.

Join Profiling Evil in the field as Mike hits the road across Utah and Nevada, tracing a line through some of the West’s most haunting murder cases and forgotten crime scenes. The Brendan Banfield double-murder case is finally headed to trial, and once a case reaches that point, the conversation has to change. This stops being about speculation and becomes about evidence, witnesses, and whether a story actually holds up inside a courtroom.
