Profiling Evil

In most families, the holidays are driven by loving, caring mothers who can’t wait to get everybody under the same roof. But what happens when the “mom” at the center of the story is accused — or convicted — of destroying her own family? In this Profiling Evil episode, we look at how high-profile women like Ruby Franke, Jodi Hildebrandt, Kouri Richins, and Lori Vallow Daybell will likely spend their holidays behind bars. Richins’ charges are still allegations. What are the holidays actually like in prisons and jails. We’ll even chat about the difference from conditions in historic Utah jails from the 1800s and how they compared the modern world of inmate tablets, education programs, and even conjugal-visits. Is spending Christmas in prison the worst thing that can happen to you…

or is it living with the knowledge that you murdered or brutalized your own children?

In this episode, we dig into the perplexing case of 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard and her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, a case that stalled and left far more questions than answers. We break down the recent court hearing in which a false-imprisonment charge against Ashlee was dismissed due to insufficient evidence, and we examine whether law enforcement and the prosecution moved too quickly, potentially botching the investigation, or whether the true motive behind the charge was pressure on Ashlee to talk about Melodee’s whereabouts. Then we walk through three plausible scenarios for where Melodee might be, including one involving protective concealment, one involving dangerous criminal activity, and one involving a planned disappearance. We recap what we do know: media reports of child welfare investigations, homeschooling status, a road trip in a rental vehicle returned without damage, plate-swaps and disguises, Ashlee’s lack of cooperation, and the looming question: will the state invoke a statute like Idaho officials did in the Lori Daybell case to detain Ashlee until Melodee is found?

In this week’s Feedback Friday, I’m filming just east of Las Vegas—on a lonely stretch of desert highway known for mob history, hidden graves, and more than a few stories about barrels resting quietly on the lake bottom. Perfect place to unpack delusion, manipulation, and your questions about Chad Daybell. We’re going to walk through your top comments, the biggest legal questions about why Chad Daybell is even allowed to write these letters, whether Chad Daybell could ever profit from them, why he avoids mentioning Lori, and how his behavior compares to other death row offenders. We also take a detour into Australia for an update on the Mr. Cruel investigation and talk offender psychology, narrative control, grooming, avoidance patterns, and what delusional self-mythologizing looks like behind bars.

This week on True Crime Tuesday, we’re looking at three cases dominating national headlines — each different in the details, but united by one theme: human behavior under stress and the tragic consequences that follow. First, we examine the death of Michael Duarte, the popular food influencer known as FoodWithBearHands, who was shot and killed by a Medina County Sheriff’s deputy in Texas. Then we’ll move to Las Vegas, Nevada where an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed during a road-rage dispute. It’s a heartbreaking reminder that everyday irritation can escalate into deadly violence when ego, stress, and weapons mix. And finally, we’ll revisit one of the darkest cold cases in America which happened over the US Thanksgiving holiday in 2010. The disappearance, now murder of three little boys now memorialized as the Skelton Brothers. After fifteen long years, their father has been charged with their murders. This episode is a reminder of how fragile safety can be, how quickly behavior can escalate, and how important it is to understand the warning signs long before tragedy unfolds.

Chad Daybell just dropped Letter #9 about his “third near-death experience” from 2017, complete with a Spirit Woman in Black, a minute-long blackout where family says he turned purple, and a “fiery dart” that he and Tammy interpreted as a spiritual weapon. Let’s unpack how this letter fits Chad Daybell’s Death Row Marketing Plan. It’s a rebranding campaign that uses religious imagery, paranormal claims, and nostalgia to push the public away from the facts that Chad Daybell was convicted of murdering his wife, Tammy Daybell, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan. Shortly after Tammy’s death he secretly married Lori Vallow in Hawaii while JJ and Tylee were buried on his property. Walk through the manipulation tactics, the psychology, spiritual bypassing, magical thinking, dissociation, impression management, and the quiet sales pitch back to his books and speaking circuit. We’ll keep JJ, Tylee, Tammy, Charles Vallow, Brandon Boudreaux, and Colby Ryan front and center, where they belong.

In 1929, a young Japanese pilot named Masashi Goto set out to achieve the impossible: fly his homemade biplane, the Ryofu-Go (“Thunderbird”), across three continents and land in Japan. Goto was the first Japanese citizen to earn a U.S. pilot’s license, inspired by pioneers like #HarrietQuimby, #AmeliaEarhart, and #BessieColeman. After years of hard work, Goto finally launched his world flight attempt. On July 4, 1929, carrying both an American flag and a letter bound for Japan, he departed Salt Lake City on the next leg of his journey. But over Utah’s rugged Uinta Mountains, a violent thunderstorm ended his dream.

Four days later, a sheepherder named Nymphus Simmons found the wreckage in Dry Canyon. Goto’s neck was broken instantly on impact. Though his flight was unfinished, his story became a powerful symbol of ambition, sacrifice, and the courage to bridge cultures. Today, a weathered monument on Highway 35 near Kamas, Utah, marks the site of his dream’s end. Once vandalized during WWII, it was later restored by the Japanese Association of Utah and the Japanese American Citizens League—ensuring his name will never fade from memory.

Nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard disappeared from Vandenberg Village where she lived in Lompoc, California. The case has left investigators and family searching for answers and this episode reconstructs the official timeline, down to the white Chevy Malibu rental on Oct. 7th, to a license-plate swap and a confirmed Oct. 9 sighting near the Colorado–Utah border. Let’s talk about the homeschool-study process that delayed reporting and explore some mental-health and behavioral possibilities, all whiile we try to understand why California officials havent filed charges in hopes the mother will produce the missing child. Then, with eirie dejavu, let’s draw a procedural parallel to the Lori Vallow Daybell case—showing how court orders to produce a child might change everything. Bottom line: If you were in Green River or Panguitch, Utah; Littlefield, Arizona; Primm, Nevada; Rancho Cucamonga, California on Oct. 9–10, 2025, check your dashcam/doorbell/CCTV for any evidence of Melodee’s location.
