  • Why Some Women Fall for Convicted Killers: Chris Watts, Luigi Mangione and Richard Ramirez

In this episode of Profiling Evil, I sit down with clinical and forensic psychologist Dr. Joni Johnston to examine why some women pursue relationships with men responsible for notorious killings. We begin with Chris Watts, who is serving life without parole for murdering his pregnant wife, Shanann Watts, their daughters, Bella and Celeste, and their unborn son, Nico. With reports that Watts may now want to marry a woman who has repeatedly visited him in prison, we discuss what someone may gain from a relationship built around distance, controlled contact and the belief that she alone understands the man behind the crime.

Dr. Johnston explains the limited research surrounding hybristophilia, the term commonly used for attraction to people who commit serious crimes. We discuss rescue fantasies, religious redemption, the desire to feel uniquely important, denial of overwhelming evidence and the emotional appeal of a relationship in which everyday responsibilities are largely absent. We also examine how an incarcerated offender can create intimacy through letters, telephone calls and carefully controlled stories while the person outside supplies money, attention, loyalty and a connection to the free world.

We compare Watts with Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker, who received attention from numerous women while awaiting execution and eventually married Doreen Lioy. Her refusal to accept the evidence against him lasted for years before DNA linked Ramirez to the killing of nine-year-old Mei Leung. We also discuss Luigi Mangione and the public support, romantic attention and substantial defense contributions he received after the killing of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson. Mangione has now pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges resulting in Thompson’s death and admitted in court that he shot him; the separate New York murder prosecution is currently being challenged by his attorneys. (Associated Press)

This conversation is not about assuming that every person who writes to an inmate has the same motivation. It is about understanding the different psychological needs that can make these relationships attractive, the ways imprisoned offenders may groom or manipulate people outside and the difference between a sincere claim of change and years of accountable behavior. Dr. Johnston also explains why intelligence, professional training or previous relationship experience does not necessarily protect someone from emotional manipulation.

I want to hear what you think. Should Chris Watts be permitted to marry while serving life for killing Shanann, Bella, Celeste and Nico? Is a prison relationship evidence of love, a rescue effort, a redemption story or something the offender has carefully constructed?

  • Tupac Shakur Murder Trial: Keffe D’s Own Words Take Center Stage | Profiling Evil

Nearly thirty years after Tupac Shakur was shot on a Las Vegas street, Duane “Keffe D” Davis is on trial for murder. In this episode, I walk through the prosecution’s retaliation theory, the defense claim that Davis turned fiction into a profitable public persona, and the most important testimony from the first week. We will look at the MGM Grand fight, the white Cadillac, Davis’s protected 2008 interview, his later public interviews and memoir, the medical evidence, the witnesses who still do not want to talk, and the holes created by three decades without a gun, a car or testimony from the other men prosecutors say were inside that Cadillac. I will also identify the exact portions of the opening statements that are worth watching and explain what each side needs the jury to believe. • Alisa Goods Went to a Vegas CVS and Vanished | Profiling Evil

On August 8th, 2026, 63-year-old grandmother Alisa Goods stepped out of a Las Vegas home to pick up iron pills from a nearby CVS. She never came back and there aren’t any witnesses we’re aware of, no trace of the woman, just silence. Then four days later, her phone started sending texts to her family asking for gas money and Bitcoin. There's one problem: Alisa Goods doesn't drive and I doubt she even uses bitcoin. Someone else likely has her phone and they knew her name, her family's numbers, and exactly how to make them desperate enough to consider sending money. Her daughter flew across the country to search while other family members plea for help on the internet. Her son recorded a phone call from a woman claiming to be his mother but the voice on the other end of the line, wasn’t her. Law enforcement says there's "nothing to suggest she is in danger," but I join the family in disagreeing. This is the story of a woman who simply went to the store and a case that is raising serious questions about fraud, foul play, and who gets to decide when a missing person matters.

  • Did Lindsay Clancy Know Killing Her Kids Was Wrong ? | Profiling Evil

Lindsay Clancy has never denied killing her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months old. That's not what this trial is about. The real question in front of the jury is whether she knew, in the legal and moral sense, that what she was doing was wrong — and whether a mental disease or defect took that capacity away from her.

Let’s step past the emotion and dig into the actual legal question of whether Clancy’s fear of losing her children prompted the murders. To make sense, let’s examine parts of the Andrea Yates conviction side by side without forgetting that eight children died in the two cases.

This video discusses the deaths of children and mental illness including postpartum psychosis. If you or someone you know is struggling, get help immediately.

  • The Case That Still Haunts Iowa! Reporter Jodi Huisentruit Vanished in 30 Seconds. | Profiling Evil

In this episode of Profiling Evil, I’m joined by veteran crime reporter Caroline Lowe to discuss the unsolved disappearance of Jodi Huisentruit, the 27-year-old morning news anchor who vanished outside her Mason City, Iowa apartment on June 27, 1995. Jodi had overslept and told her producer she’d be right in for the morning newscast at KIMT-TV. About 20 minutes later, investigators believe she made it to her red Mazda Miata, just steps from her apartment door, where evidence suggested she was attacked and abducted. Her personal items were found scattered near the car, including shoes, hairspray, a hairdryer, and a bent key. Jodi has never been found.

Caroline Lowe has spent decades reporting on this case and helping keep Jodi’s story alive through FindJodi.com. In this conversation, we talk about the timeline, the crime scene, possible offender types, the importance of victimology, the dangers of tunnel vision, and why law enforcement sometimes holds back evidence even when the public wants answers. We also talk about who Jodi was beyond the case: a young journalist with big dreams, deep friendships, a love of travel, and a life that should never be reduced to the mystery of her disappearance. After 30 years, this case still matters. Someone may know something. A memory, a property connection, an old conversation, a vehicle, a tip, or even remains discovered by chance could still move this investigation forward. Please visit www.FindJodi.com for more information, case updates, and contact information for law enforcement.

  • Lindsay Clancy Trial, Doctor Shopping or a Mother Desperate for Help? | Profiling Evil

The Lindsay Clancy trial has moved into the psychiatric care she received before she killed her three children, and the testimony is raising difficult questions about fragmented treatment, repeated medication changes, telehealth and what people mean when they accuse a patient of “doctor shopping.” In this episode, I lay out how many providers were involved, what Lindsay may have been seeking, what the treatment history gives the defense and what it does not prove about criminal responsibility. I also examine defense attorney Kevin Reddington’s aggressive cross-examination of Dr. Jennifer Tufts, including the disputed notation about “not hyper” and “pressured speech.” Was Dr. Tufts changing her explanation, or did the defense turn a poorly written line into something far larger than the evidence supports? I’ll also explain why the attack reminded me of a lesson I learned as an investigator: when the evidence itself is difficult to attack, the defense may attack the investigation or the person responsible for interpreting it.

  • Chris Watts Wants to Marry Again: What Draws Women to Convicted Killers?| Profiling Evil

Chris Watts is serving life without parole for murdering his pregnant wife, Shanann, and their daughters, Bella and Celeste. Now, Lizzie Henderson has publicly confirmed that she is in a relationship with Watts, while reporting says she moved from Ohio to Wisconsin, visited him 23 times in about fifteen months, sought to change her surname and joined him in requesting permission to marry. In this episode, I separate what Henderson has said herself from details attributed to other outlets, examine what is known about the relationship, and ask why a woman would build a future around a man who destroyed his own family. I compare the case with Richard Ramirez and Doreen Lioy, including my friend Phil Carlo’s firsthand view of their prison wedding, and use the available research to explain attraction to notorious offenders, rescue fantasies, controlled intimacy, denial, notoriety and the very unusual relationship structure created by prison walls.

  • Who Sees the Risk? What Men and Women Notice Before Danger | Profiling Evil

Why can two people walk through the same place and notice completely different warning signs? In this special Profiling Evil episode, we’ll draw on lessons from law-enforcement and behavioral-analysis alongside a fascinating peer-reviewed study by Robert A. Chaney, PhD, Alyssa Baer, MPH, and L. Ida Tovar, MPH. The researchers asked 571 college students to examine campus walking environments under changing conditions of lighting and entrapment. Women tended to focus more on bushes, darkness, and areas outside the path, while men tended to focus more directly on the path ahead.

Those differences don’t tell us that one gender is naturally better at detecting danger, nor does the study measure actual victimization or predict who would avoid an attack. What it gives us is a useful way to think about our environment and the blind spots that increase our chances of being victimized. We’ll explore how offenders take advantage of location, situation and circumstances to get the upper hand on their intended victims and we’ll talk about how simple choices can lower exposure without surrendering your freedom. This conversation is about prevention, not blame and it’s all about giving good people more options and making predatory behavior harder to carry out.

  • The Lindsay Clancy Trial: Can the State Win on Emotion? | Profiling Evil

Days seven and eight of the Lindsay Clancy trial brought the jury toxicology results, DNA findings, testimony from the children’s former nanny, friends and relatives, and deeply difficult medical evidence concerning the murders of Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy. In this episode, I explain what that testimony added to the prosecution’s case, what it may have handed to the defense, and why the emotional force of this trial may become as important as the legal arguments over criminal responsibility. I also examine a harder question of whether a public murder trial is the best available form of justice when nobody disputes who killed these three children, but the parties sharply disagree about whether their mother was legally responsible because of psychosis. Finally, I look at the decision to have two women prosecute this case and why it would be irresponsible to assume that female prosecutors, or female jurors re naturally less sympathetic to postpartum mental illness. What matters is how the evidence is framed, how credibility is built, and whether the jury can separate the horror of the result from the legal question it must answer.

  • Lindsay Clancy Speaks in Court: What Her Forensic Stipulation Really Means | Profiling Evil

Lindsay Clancy spoke in court for the first time during her trial and personally agreed to a broad stipulation covering important parts of the Commonwealth’s forensic case. That was not a guilty plea, and it did not abandon her defense. It simply means prosecutors will not spend days proving evidence the defense does not seriously dispute. In this episode, I look at what Lindsay agreed to, what we learned from the medical, medication, journal and bloodstain testimony on Monday and Tuesday, and how both sides are moving toward the real question in this trial: Was Lindsay criminally responsible when she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan, or did severe mental illness leave her unable to understand the wrongfulness of her actions or control her conduct?
