When I ask those questions, I get a clear confirmation that I’m doing the right things to attract clients who are ideal for me. My customer journey is working! 

Early in my business I did not ask those questions and I didn’t have any kind of a customer journey. I wasn’t thinking strategically. I did anything I could to enroll any type of client at any price. And that’s where I was developmentally in my business. I’ve learned a lot since then.

Future clients become your current clients, so it’s important to think through what you can do today and every day to keep a pipeline of future clients flowing to you.

Develop a customer journey that nurtures people in your audience and gets the most ideal for you among all of them 100% ready to hire you.

When you are starting something new — learning how to coach and build your business — what’s the most natural way to feel?

I was having the last session with a favorite client the other day.  Last sessions are a bittersweet time for all. Your clients lose an accountability partner and the structure that helps them stay inspired and make things happen. From here on out they’ll have to hold themselves accountable.

You lose their unique presence in your life. You’ve been holding space for their growth and it’s time for closure. You’ve seen them transform and learned so much from this unique human being.

My last calls with coaches are often pick-my-brain sessions. They ask about client management, little business building details and insider tips that will help them avoid pitfalls or shorten learning curves.

The big question on every coach’s mind, that they are often afraid to ask until the last minute, is … "How long will it take me to be successful?  Is it 3 months, 6 months, 2 years?"  I’ll share what I told my client with you now.

All of my clients are unique human beings who bring different skills and challenges to the table when we build every aspect of their coaching business.

As part of our work together we look at the best way for each coach to market.

It’s not a good idea to casually follow what other coaches are doing. If you market in a way that isn’t right for you, your audience and your business model then it will take longer to get traction. You will resist doing what you need to do because you may not naturally take to the approach.

Your target audience and niche are a big factor in the way you market. It won’t make sense for you to choose an audience where you’ll need to do a lot of live networking if you absolutely hate live networking.

Not every coach has to market the same way. It’s best to focus in on a small set of marketing approaches that fit rather than getting overwhelmed with too many options.

When I started coaching, I acted as if I didn’t deserve to earn well and have the life I want. Here is what that looked like:

1.     I over-complicated my business model by offering too many coaching packages. 
2.     I undervalued myself by charging too little to sustain my business. 
3.     I over-delivered in every single way. 
4.     I was too accommodating with my schedule.
5.     I allowed late payments.
6.     I didn’t think through what I wanted and plot a strategic course to get there.

Did you know I started as a spiritual coach? It was the seed of a coaching niche idea that I never fully formed.

I put up a vague website that sat there collecting cyber dust. I had a few short-term clients but no consistent income.

Is that happening in your coaching business?

Many coaches get attached to being what I call a fill-in-the-blank coach. A transition coach, a confidence coach, a leadership coach, a burnout coach – that last one at least has some specificity in it but is still missing some vital pieces.

Coaches have similar origin stories.

I’m a 2 on the Enneagram – The Helper. In my last corporate job, it was difficult to get work done because people would stop by all day to tell me their problems. I joked that I needed a sign saying “The Doctor is Out”.
 
Observing that confidante talent in me, motivated a friend to ask “Have you ever thought about being a life coach?”
 
Within days I enrolled in coach training and negotiated an independent contractor role with my boss so I could work at home on select projects while I studied and built my business.
 
Are you an innate helper? Do you love to make it all better when someone is hurting? I bet you’re good at it.
