Today we continue our Boston Marathon series. I'm hosting moms who qualified for the 2020 Boston Marathon, which was postponed to September and eventually canceled altogether. These women are resilient, and I'm excited to share their struggle/victory stories and why the 2020 Boston Marathon would have been their victory run.

I was inspired to do this because I know how disappointed I was hearing the news of the cancelation when you work for years toward a goal only to have it ripped away from you, it can be devastating. We can't always schedule our circumstances, but we can choose our attitudes toward them, and these runners have chosen to use this disappointment to propel them forward in new goals.

Today's guest didn't start her running journey until her 30s post children. She attempted a few times throughout her life, but it never gained attraction. She never planned to even run a marathon, and now she has seven under her belt, including three BQs, but this year would have been her first Boston Marathon.

She's had to work through multiple injuries and figure out how to get her training in with a busy family and work schedule. Sometimes we push our goals to the side because we think we can't have both a good family structure and a big goal, but Jen proves you can have both, and by the end of this episode, I think you'll be itching to develop a big goal for yourself if you don't have one already. I have a question for you. What’s the first thing that you do in the morning?

For many, the answer to that question - even before they head to the bathroom - is to pick up their phone that is right next to them on their nightstand. However, as soon as you reach for your cell phone and check your emails and social media, you have said no to yourself and yes to everyone else.

Your wake time is important for you. It’s a time to get yourself ready for the day ahead physically, mentally, and spiritually. When you say yes to yourself in the morning, you can be better equipped to serve others throughout the day.

I want you to wake up to your goals, not your cell phone, and in this episode, I'm going to share a few tips on how to do just that!

Janine Grinage is a runner, wife, and mother.  She's been running for 40 years, as her love for running began in middle school.  She was on the track team throughout high school and then ran for pleasure during college.  

After running several 5k and 10k races, she expanded her racing to include the marathon distance.  In her first marathon, The Cowtown Marathon in February of 1998, Janine finished in 9th place for the females and in 3rd place for her age group. 

Three days after running Cowtown she found out that her finishing time qualified her to run in the race she has dreamed of running since she was 16 - The Boston Marathon.  Seven weeks after running Cowtown she found herself laced up in Hopkinton for the 12 Noon start.

New beginnings are hard because we often feel as if that means we have to let go of the past. For Heather Chapman, new beginnings means living without her precious daughter. The courage to have new experiences, celebrate birthdays and holidays, and go on family vacations without her was more than overwhelming the first two years.

You might not be afraid of new beginnings because of death, but what about a broken relationship, having to let go of a dream, or taking a chance on someone who has hurt you in the past?

We mamas tend to put our children first and make life as happy as we can for them. In doing this, we often hide our own emotional needs and suppress our own fears. This can lead to depression, anxiety, and overall unhappiness. By talking about how to embrace new beginnings, it gives moms permission to look at their fears and face them rather than suppress them.

What do we do when our plans are changed, and it wasn't us who changed them?

Did you know that we have the power to control our thoughts? We can change our minds! It’s not easy, and it takes work - daily work - but it’s possible, rewarding, and worth it.

Our minds are like computers. We need to program them because they calibrate our expectations, and our expectations calibrate how effective or successful we will be at putting in the work to make things happen.

This process is a daily occurrence, really a moment-by-moment journey because we take in 1000s of thoughts every day, and our mind has to manually accept or reject each one. Accept - decline - accept - decline - accept - decline. So much clutter to get through! But isn’t it good news that you can change your mind! You do have the power to control your thoughts. God has given us the tools and resources we need to dwell on what is pure, right, and true.
