  • Ep: 050 - Fathering

Join Melon and Raf as they dive into a topic that is near and dear to their hearts. Fathering. They willing and enthusiastically talk about the challenges of doing the hardest part of parenting, which usually involves just being truly present. They discuss the challenges they faces as fathers in their early stages, understanding the balance of love and discipline, and now seeing the fruits of that labor bloom today. They openly talk about the power and impact parents have on their children not just in the present, but as something that they’ll carry into the future. Raf admits that his biggest challenges are getting the calculus right. Meaning, how to balance the work-home life equation, followed by…how to then create the time that is solely dedicated to impact his son in the best way possible. Melon shares the delicate and beautiful relationship of the stages his kids are in now. In their late teens, he celebrates their autonomy and ultimately know the reward will come in the form of their individual desires to continue to reintegrate themselves, even as young adults, with their parents. Please let us know what challenges and successes you’ve experienced as parents. We’d love to hear them and share them on the show.

  • Ep: 049 - Thank You for Your Service w/ Special Guest- Skyelor Anderson

On a very special episode, Mike welcomes this week’s guest, artist and musician, Skyelor Anderson. Skyelor is a rising country music artist well known for his patriotic song of “Thank you for your service”, but also a hard-working, husband and father that actively pushes back the chaos of his music career and all that life brings.

With Memorial Day on the horizon, Mike and Skyelor discuss his background and journey to the music industry and what events led him to write such a powerful song that has affected millions across the country. They also touch on the harsh realities of being “successful” in the music industry and put to rest the common misperceptions that life must be “perfect.”

This is a very honest and real discussion that involves two completely different paths, but as you’ll hear, there are more similarities than one may have believed possible. We are all in this fight together to push back against the chaos and reach our optimal true selves.

Happy Memorial Day. May we never forget what was asked, what was given, and what must be done to maintain our freedom and way of life here at home. May God bless those who have lost loved ones and bring them peace. It is a price that can never be repaid but can always be appreciated forever.

  • Ep: 048 - Existential Forms of Mental Health

Join Mike and Raf this week as they continue their discourse on mental health and more importantly, how it plays an existential role in our lives individually, and collectively in the ether of our current culture. They run the gamut in this discussion. They share personal experiences regarding  people close to them, as well as, their own mental health battles and the immediate ripples it had in their lives. More importantly, they discuss the strategies they used individually to get to a better mental space. Raf shares excerpts from a profound reading he’s recently picked up from famed longevity pioneer Dr. Peter Attia, that have helped him understand why so many men continue down the same path, seemingly, unassuming. Mike touches on his own past and present issues, and the immense importance of being open about our experiences so that we can help reframe the idea that seeking mental health therapy is anything but weak. In the contrary, both men agree that it is one of the strongest gestures you can commit. That is, to identify that you’re in a terrible place as a result of some inevitable traumatic event, and moving forward, as difficult as it may seem, to seek help. Simply put, to continue fighting the good fight.

  • Ep: 047 - Difficult Decision Making (& Happy Mother’s Day!)

Join Mike and Melon as they open with a Mother’s Day shout out to all the amazing women who nurture and love us unconditionally. They give us all compassion and care for us when we are down and live their highs when we triumph over challenges. Let us know about the amazing mothers in your life.

    ·      Difficult decisions.

Sometimes it can feel like life is only a series of difficult decisions. All the easy ones are made quickly. Only tough ones get left for us to struggle with.

“When facing two options, choose the harder one.”

In many ways, the life we all want to live is waiting for us on the other side of a series of tough decisions- whether it is your personal health, diet, an intimate relationship, family, career, sporting success, or a combat deployment. Often, we already know what we should do, but the lazier part of our mind throws up an easy way out as a fake alternative.

    Key topic points:

    ·      Avoiding a decision is in fact a decision- procrastination.

    ·      Different parts of us want different things.

    ·      Get distance from the decision.

    ·      Revisit your original or highest objective.

    ·      Who are we making the decision for? Ourselves and our character vs other people’s opinion of us.

Mike opens up about times when he chose the harder right option, and contrasts that with a very moving story of a time when he procrastinated. Melon shared his two very different decisions when preparing to join the Australian Army vs when he joined the Air Force.

Let us know what you do to make your best decisions when you are faced with a difficult one.

They discussed what advice they’d give their 10 year old self. Similarly, they talked about any “what if’s” they might find themselves pondering and regretting. Finally, Mike shares an inspiring story of an active duty service member who was severely wounded, and managed to overcome tremendous obstacle to be back with his men, still serving at the highest levels. • EP: 043 - Tender Warrior - Beneath the Breastplate

Hollywood is full of tough guy characters. The hard nosed action hero who comes through in the end every time, and who crushes all before him. We all know the trope. Part of it is that these characters don’t have emotions, or feelings.

We are aiming to work towards physical competence and capability every day, but are we also building up our emotional strength and emotional IQ? Can we be both physically capable and emotionally strong?

Your hosts return to Stu Weber’s book “Tender Warrior”, and discuss the chapter titled “Beneath the Breastplate”.

How can we all manifest the dual aspects of the books title? How can we be capable warriors, who can fight for our goals and principles, while also preserving and building our tender side so we can nurture our families and communities and know what it is that we are fighting for?

We would love to hear your insights into this topic. Please reach out and let us know what you think.

  • PBC, Ep: 042 - Tender Warrior- Staying Power

This week, the trio returns to one of their favorite books, Tender Warrior. A book written by Stu Weber, former Green Beret, Vietnam Veteran, and Pastor. We focus on Chapter 4 and it’s topic of “Staying Power.”

In today’s society, it is very easy to run away from that in which we fear or that causes us pain or hardship. The “comforts” of western civilization such as fast food, dating apps, global communication at the touch of a finger, or even perceived entitlements can convince you quickly that trying is not worth the energy. That something better can be right around the corner and you don’t have to grind it out.

A real man brings certainty to his world by the power of promise. If we promise others, it should mean we are in it 100% with them.  Whether it’s relationships, teammates, or your work colleagues, people are trusting in YOU and you are trusting in THEM. This is essential in building a sustainable future.

However, there are limitations and situations in which we are warranted to step away. Abusive relationships (mental, physical, emotional) unhealthy actions, when an agreement is broken, or when one side does not uphold their promise to you. It is OK to step away and take care of yourself.

-How can staying power be defined in your life?

-What or who do you struggle staying with?

-Does it benefit you to stay or go in the long run? What is your reasoning?

  • PBC, Ep: 041 - Heroes & Villains

Join Mike and Raf as they dive into a topic that we can all relate to. And that is, the duality of man. In essence, they talk about the differences and nuances that can make someone commit from being a God to a Monster, or vise versa. And we could think of no better example than the Nazi prison guards, that committed untold atrocities against humanity. Ultimately murdering over 6 million and tortured and violating untold numbers. Deliberate torture, and palpable hatred for similarly humans, who simply had a different culture. In the same day, these men and women, would go home to their wives and husbands, and children. There, as they stepped through those doors, they seemingly became the loving husband or wife, father and mothers to children. And the further the boys discuss it, the more they come to realize that the ability to tap into both of those abilities in yourself is not mutually exclusive to a Nazi in the 1940s or a Khmer Brother in 1970. This very delicate balance of being a Monster or a God can happen to any person, any organization, or group of people. Thanks for joining us as they talk about an uncommon topic that they feel should be discussed. If for nothing else, to understand what makes us tick.
