  • PBC, 030 - The Nostalgia of Christmas

Christmas. That special time of year that we all look forward to with bright hopeful eyes and hearts. Praying for peace, heartfelt moments, and wonderful memories. Why is this that time? Why do we yearn for such feelings? What makes this time of year so special? Is it the places? The people? Or Is it simply just the magic of Christmas?

Please join us as we share our special Christmas episode and try to uncover the path to that Christmas magic.

Mike shares some memories of both good and hard times during the holiday season. He reflects on a funny, family gift he received as a “naughty child.” His first Christmas after losing his father to cancer, and his current journey to create the Christmas environment for the next generation by learning to become what he loved.

Melon shares memories of Christmas with the McFadden family in Australia, and some memorable bouts with wrapping paper and the family famous “enhanced“ adult pudding. He also touches on his current role for his family while living abroad in the Middle East.

Raf reflects on his childhood memories and special Christmas moments that his hard-working, immigrant parents were able to provide for his family with limited finances; enforcing the point, that money doesn’t mean magic, and how he uses that to provide the same experience for his son currently.

From the Pushing Back Chaos crew, we wish all of our listeners, a very merry Christmas and happy holiday season!

  • PBC, 029 - 5-Year Plan: Review and Update

Planning. The process of considering and deciding on desirable goals and then mapping out a path to achieve them. This is the first step in causing a desired outcome to appear in reality. Putting a deadline onto the goal is what separates it from a dream and motivates us into action.

Back in 2020, your hosts went through the process of mapping out goals for themselves- big goals in a 5 year plan.

On Episode #18 of Not Your Average Operator, Melon, Mike and Raf independently came up with outcomes in a range of life areas.

All three hosts found it useful to look at large areas of their lives: emotional, professional, financial.

This episode is the essential next step- the review and update. An honest assessment is needed to get the data required for that mid-course update. This can be done on your own, or you can ask people you trust for feedback if your skin is extremely thick!

    How did they go?

How are you going with your large life goals?

Let us know what your goals are, and how you have been tracking towards their achievement.

  • PBC, Ep: 028 - The 12 Month Mirror

Have you ever stopped and taken a look back at who you were at this time last year? Did you ever write down who you were, where you were, and why that was you?

How about now? Who are you? How have you changed? What caused the change? What are you doing better at now than you were before?

This week, the dynamic trio of Melon, Mike ,and Raf welcome their friend and fellow marine veteran, Jeff Skinner, to the show. Mike and Jeff met last year in Arlington National cemetery. A place of sacrifice, whispering stories of heroism, and an unrelenting feeling of wanting to be a better person.

Each of the guys open up and share their own list of words that described themselves one year ago, and fast forward to the present and evaluate who they have become for the better. Trying to demonstrate and lead by example, they show that the little things that we focus on every day will lead to the big things that we desire most in life.

We challenge you to ask yourself who you were a year ago, and write down what has changed for you.

Are you where you said you would be?

Are you who you said you wanted to be?

    C’mon….lets have the conversation!

  • PBC, Ep: 027 - Thanksgiving Everyday

The boys, absent of Melon, carved out some time to have a sit down and talk about the busy holiday they all experienced this season. This was much a conversation between two friends just catching up, as much as it is on the power of exercising gratitude and positive affirmation. The guys talk about why Love is a Verb, and not just a word you should say out loud.

They share the steps and daily rituals they take to reach a heightened sense of their surroundings, and then overlap that consciousness with immense gratitude. A practice, they both agreed, has been transformational. Building on previous podcast episodes, they talk about “stacking those wins” first thing in the morning so that you can launch yourself at the world in the best version of yourself.

Not surprisingly, both Mike and Raf share the capacity, by which they’re able to accomplish in a day when they commit to waking up early. By an order of magnitude that is only comprehensible much further down the day, or week. Finally, they agree, and urge the listeners to practice reaching out within their circle, and telling their people why their grateful for their friendship. It’s effective to write it in a text, or even an email, but leaving it in a voice message is more personal, because it will feel like you’re standing in the room with them. It will have a positive effect who’s ripple has no end.

    -What are you thankful for?

-Write down at least 10 people, places, or things.

-Share a kind message with at least 5 people.

  • PBC, Ep: 026 - Personal Development

This week, the boys and their guest Nick Grossi, had a great discussion on the benefits of personal development. More importantly, they discussed why personal development isn’t just a set of activities that one does consistently to improve their capabilities and potential human capital; but instead the necessary path to improve your life, and those you impact most throughout your daily existence. All four men shared some of the tremendous growth they’ve achieved through various practices of personal development learned through trial and error, books, conversations, and self talk and self realization. They tried, as best as possible, to construct a quick, and effective framework that anyone can use to start their own journey of personal development. These are just some of the most fundamental pillars to begin your life long journey to reach the apex of what is possible. First, they all strongly agreed, you need to love yourself. Without achieving that, you’ll never be able to give everyone else the best version of yourself. Second, achieve your highest level of strength! Both in physical form, as well as, the form of emotional intelligence. Third, practice gratitude for everything good and bad that happens to you. Finally, know that the ultimate goal of creating the best version of yourself is simply to gift that person to the world. In other words, your pursuits for the best versions of yourself are really for everyone else’s benefit. You want to be the healthiest so that you can help others get healthy. You want to achieve financial independence so that you’re able to help those that need it. You want to be as strong as your body is capable, because one day, you might have to save a life, to include your own. This is a belief that runs deep through the core of all 4 men! We hope you consider your path to the best version of yourself. We’d love to meet him/her.

Please share your thoughts about this episode and more importantly, we hope this encourages our listeners to think of the other steps we can all use effectively to help us all grow and be a better society. We love reading your insights, feedback, and hopefully some recommendations for strong women to join this series!

  • Ep: 025 - Service and Citizenship

As a follow up from a previous NYAO legacy episode (7) titled “Childhood Mentors“, Mike and Melon are pleased to welcome a very special guest to the show this week, Mr. Carl Huszar- U.S Army Vietnam veteran, 40+ year educator, and the current president of Mike’s hometown historical society.

As Mike’s former U.S History/Government teacher in High School, he expertly  instilled many of the values and lessons required to maintain security in a productive society,  that Mike has carried on and demonstrated throughout his 16 year military career.

The three discuss some very important topics such as:

    -Military Service and it’s purpose

    -The importance of Citizenship

    -Understanding Government

    -Veterans/Remembrance Day

    -Mentors/ Veteran influence in society

-The importance to never stop learning!

Who are some of your mentors?

How have they changed your life?

What kind of mentor are you and what are you passing on?

  • Ep: 024 - Strong Women Series: Taylor Ridge

This week, the boys had the immense pleasure of having a sit down with a true legend, for those lucky enough to have served with her, in the Army Black Hawk Medevac community. You’ll agree that her resume and high functioning abilities seem only natural by products of her demeanor and unstoppable approach to life at large. Something we can all glean from! Major Taylor Ridge is a current transitioning Aeromedical Evacuation Officer who served 11 years holding multiple key leadership roles in and out of the cockpit. The most notable, and impactful in the community were as a U.S. Army Medevac Pilot in Command and Company Commander. Luckily for us, Raf had the serendipitous fortune of having served under Taylor, and deployed to Afghanistan together in 2015. More than a great Army officer, Tylor is the complete package to what leadership demands. Always fighting to keep a positive outlook, especially in the face of fierce adversity!  Her ability to articulate well made her approachable. More importantly, the soldiers that served with her, always knew she was there to protect them, above all. In the military, when people single you out as a leader they respect, naturally, you earn a nickname.. Enter Mama Llama! The shadow governor to the Combat Llamas, a legendary Air Medevac platoon in its own right. In this condensed window we make a concerted effort to unpack everything Taylor’s accomplished, and understand the nuances of why some things came easy to her, while others took a turn. You’ll be left speechless after you hear some of the stories involving Black Hawk crash and when she recounts the moment being shot while responding to a medevac mission. Undoubtedly, you’ll be left wanting to hear more of her story, because we certainly did!

Please share your thoughts about this episode and more importantly, we hope this encourages our listeners to think of the strong women around them. We love reading your insights, feedback, and hopefully some recommendations for strong women to join this series!

  • PBC, 023 - The importance of Empathy

“Acquire the habit of attending carefully to what is being said by another, and of entering, so far as possible, into the mind of the speaker”

    -       Marcus Aurelius

Empathy. The ability to imagine what it is like to be another person, or to put yourselves into their shoes.

Why is it that this aspect of human character is so highly prized in the professional and interpersonal space right now?

How can we apply this when we need it most- in high pressure works situations, or when we are having trials in our intimate relationships?

This is an area where we can all experience being frustrated or stuck, but if we are able to relate from a place of empathy, we can have tremendous break throughs where it matters most.

Join Mike, Melon and Raf as they cover what has worked for them, and where they draw inspiration from when they need to level up and deal with a tough scenario.

Let us know how you have developed this essential part of your character, and what results you’ve generated when you have had a breakthrough.

  • PBC. Ep: 022 - Purpose over Pleasure

“It is a sin to pursue pleasure as a good and to avoid pain as a evil.” - Marcus Aurelius

Everyday will test you. That test is unique and tailored to each one of us, because our fears are unique to us. You need to know this the second  you wake up. Life is going to test you, and you MUST be prepared.

Melon, Mike and Raf enjoyed a powerful conversation with their guest Nick Grossi. Nick, a former Marine veteran, and aspiring entrepreneur talked about the life altering effects when one chooses to seek purpose over pleasure. They recount the exponential gifts that abound in your life when you practice authenticity and honesty. Honesty with the person staring back in the mirror. The boys sat inspired listening to Nick’s voyage in his pursuit to become the best version of himself. They all agreed that reaching the apex of one’s ability should never be about yourself, but rather for those you love, your friends, and your community. Nick takes us through his daily steps to stay committed, and compares the contrast of what life was like before he built this framework. He opens up about mentors and heroes in his life. Most notably, his Father, and his mentor Wes Watson (@Watson_Fit). Even more crucial to him, is the ability to impact the masses with the same blessings that have been bestowed on him. Not surprisingly, he starts his days at 4 a.m. and walks into the gym to prepare his mind for the day. When you put purpose over pleasure, you guide yourself and others to the best existence on this earth. More importantly, you gain a strength that you never knew was already inside you, waiting to be released.

“Look well into thyself; there is a source of strength which will always spring up if thou wilt always look.” - Marcus Aurelius

Let us know how you find purpose over pleasure. What has worked best for you?
