Welcome to Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78RPM records of the 1920s and’30s.
On this week’s very special edition of Rapidly Rotating Records, we celebrate just one birthday, that of trumpeter and composer Bob Effros, and to help celebrate, joining us is Bob’s granddaughter, Barbara Effros. She affectionately refers to her grandfather as “GBE” for Grandpa Bob Effros, or simply “Grandpa Bob.” You hear him a lot on the show, but generally as a side man without being mentioned. He’s heard in most of the records played this week, and we’ll also play a couple more of Bob’s own compositions. Barbara also joined us last December, and that show is available on the RRR website in the December 2016 archive, or by clicking here. As usual, there are at least a couple of records making their RRR debut. If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email. And remember, your requests and topic segments are always welcome. As always, just click on the link below to instantly listen streaming online and/or download the show.
Enjoy the show!
Here’s the complete playlist:
Each of the records below is introduced individually with added commentary by Barbara Effros.

This week is yet another “One Thing in Common” edition of Rapidly Rotating Records. Because I apparently don’t talk as much on this show, there are 17 great records, all of which have one thing in common. It’s not a contest and the answer is pretty simple. I’ll reveal at the end of the show what the common thread is. As usual, there are at least a couple of records making their RRR debut. As you know, last week’s show was an “encore” presentation of the 20 November 2011 show because I was in Sacramento (well, technically Rancho Cordova) for the 31st annual West Coast Ragtime Festival. This week, you get a benefit from that trip which is that this week’s show is a “recap” of the festival, presenting vintage recordings of some of the songs heard at the festival, along with some interesting information about the event. Several of the performers are spotlighted, but I’m sorry they couldn’t all be featured because they were all spectacular. Unfortunately, because of the structure of the festival, it’s only possible to take in a maximum of about 20% of everything that’s offered. Per usual, there are at least a couple of records making their RRR debut. If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email. Segment 3: Holland & Coots
Oh! By Jingo – The Three Keys

As you’re listening to this week’s broadcast, I’m in Sacramento (well, technically Rancho Cordova) for the 31st annual West Coast Ragtime Festival. The bad news is that this means tonight’s show is an “encore” presentation of the 20 November 2011 show. But as they say, if you haven’t heard it, it’s new to you. And even if you did hear its original airing, that was six years ago and it deserves to be heard again! This is a 4 segment show, instead of the usual 5, and we’ll be looking to the sky, listening to some “by” songs, songs about some gals and some “bungalow” songs. The good news if that the festival provides a great theme for next week’s “Ragtime Recap” show, featuring vintage recordings of songs played at the festival.Per usual, there are at least a couple of records making their RRR debut. If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email. And remember, your requests and topic segments are always welcome. Welcome to Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78RPM records of the 1920s and’30s.
Last week we were “knockin’ a jug” which you will remembers is 20s and 30s slang for getting drunk. This week we’re going to continue knocking, but this time on wood. We’ll also have a losing streak, celebrate the Silver-Masked Tenor’s birthday and have a two segment edition of “One Thing in Common.” Per usual, there are at least a couple of records making their RRR debut. If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email. And remember, your requests and topic segments are always welcome.
