Real Crime Profile

We continue our discussion about the amazing Hulu three part docu-series "Stolen Youth" which focuses on the victims of Larry Ray, a psychopathic manipulator who systematically tried to ruin the lives of Isabella Pollok, Claudia Drury, Dan Levin, Santos, Yalitza, and Felicia Rosario. Laura points out that his daughters and former wife were most likely also victimized by his coercive control. We detail the excruciating conditions that led to each victim slowly extracting themselves from Larry's grasp.

In 2010, on the small woodsy campus of Sarah Lawrence College located in Yonkers, New York, 50 year old Lawrence Ray came to “crash” with his daughter Talia in her on-campus dorm town-house that she shared with several other students, ostensibly until he found a place to live after his recent release from prison. That fateful “visit” turned into a twisted decade long odyssey of abuse and coercive control that would nearly ruin the lives of several young people including Isabella Pollok, Claudia Drury, Dan Levin, Santos, Yalitza, and Felicia Rosario. Using the framework of Hulu’s extraordinary docs-series “Stolen Youth” we examine who these victims were, how they were lured into Larry’s web and how he was able to torture and traumatize them for so long. It is a cautionary tale that everyone needs to learn from. This is not about a “Sarah Lawrence sex cult", (in fact Laura and Jim debate whether this is a cult at all)...this is about unmasking a master manipulator capable of fooling everyone he came into contact with…including the FBI.

We continue our cross over episode with the “Cold” podcast host Dave Cawley, focusing in on one “person of interest” in particular in the disappearance of 24 year old single mother Sheree Warren - who went missing from Ogden, Utah in 1985. One of Sheree’s intimate partners, Cary Hartmann, was eventually convicted of the rapes of two woman and suspected in many many more. He has always claimed he had nothing to do with his girlfriend Sheree’s disappearance, despite a lot of inconsistencies and contradicting witnesses statements to his story. Jim highlights one red “behavioral” flag in particular. Has Jim cracked this case? You won’t want to miss this!

Trigger warning. This episode details the subject of rape and other acts of violence. Please exercise caution when listening.

Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985. She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished. When her car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no one could say how it got there.

When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police always turn suspicious eyes towards the husband. And although there was distrust around Charles Warren, he wasn’t the only suspect when Sheree went missing. She also had a boyfriend, a former cop named Cary Hartmann, who lived a sinister double life.

Season three follows two suspects– men who both raised suspicion for investigators. But with two strong persons of interest with competing facts and evidence, it muddied the murder investigation. This season, host Dave Cawley, digs into the lives of these two men, the details of the case and examines the intersections between domestic abuse and sexual violence. The COLD team seeks to answer the question: what really happened to Sheree Warren?

We are so excited for this cross over episode with Dave Cawley of the hit Wondery podcast series “Cold”. Now in his third season of “Cold”, Dave talks to us about his incredible re-investigation into a new “cold” case, that of 24-year old single mother Sheree Warren from Ogden, Utah who went missing on the evening of October 2, 1985 after leaving from work at a Utah Credit Union to meet with her estranged husband. Six weeks later her car was found abandoned in a Las Vegas parking lot. Sheree has never been found. We dig deep into Sheree’s victimology and the persons of interest of her disappearance. But what happened to Sheree Warren is just the tip of an iceberg of crime going on in this small Utah city in the 1980s. This story involves multiple serial rapists, a possible serial killer, a sex club possibly involved in extortion, and so much more. You won’t believe your ears. Join us.

Cold season 3 premieres on February 20th, but you can binge early and ad-free right now on Amazon music or Wondery Plus: Wondery.fm/RCP_Cold1

Convicted serial rapist Harvey Weinstein (HW) will be sentenced AGAIN in Los Angeles on February 23, 2023 following his conviction of rape, sexual penetration by foreign object and forcible oral copulation. He is already serving a 23-year prison sentence after being convicted of rape and sexual assault charges in New York in 2020. Joining us today are Sarah Ann Masse and Rowena Chiu who say they survived assaults by HW though sadly their cases were not addressed in these convictions. You will not believe it when Rowena tells us the abhorrent details of the Non Disclosure Agreement she was made to sign by HW’s lawyers in order to silence her about almost being raped. Sarah Ann tells us about the RICO action she was part of to hold his enablers accountable as they were complicit in his alleged illegal activities including rape, assault, and sex trafficking. Sarah Ann -- who stars in the movie about HW "She Said" playing journalist Emily Steel -- also started the advocacy group "Hire Survivors Hollywood" to support silence breakers who are facing backlash in the entertainment industry. Think this kind of thing only happens in Hollywood? Think again, as Laura and Jim weigh in. Please subscribe, share and leave us a 5 star review wherever you listen to your podcasts.

In today’s episode we mention Stephen Mill’s must-read book “Chosen” about being sexually assaulted as a child at a Jewish summer camp. You can get his book here https://amzn.to/3kJYFjM

Sergeant Jill Evans is a small-town cop in Wales with an impressive record in her job, and a less than impressive record in her love life. After three engagements, two divorces and one affair, she’s beginning to worry that love is only true in fairy tales. That is until she meets: Dean. He’s a wealthy beauty entrepreneur with his own range of toiletries.

Girl meets boy. Boy meets girl. They kiss and fall in love. Roll credits.

But that would be boring, wouldn’t it? Instead, this is a love story like no other. It’s all going so well for Jill and Dean, until Halloween night, when Dean disappears. And Sgt. Jill is left to pick up the pieces.

We are honored to have two very special guests with us Sarah Ann Masse, and Rowena Chiu who both say they were victims of sexual assault by Harvey Weinstein. Sarah Ann and Rowena tell us their stories, and the aftermath of their assaults. They have each become fierce advocates for other survivors and are still trying to shed light on HW’s enablers responsible for allowing an environment of abuse to continue. You can watch Rowena’s story depicted in the brilliant Universal film “She Said” starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan, directed by Maria Schrader and written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (who both should have been nominated for Oscars). Sarah Ann shares how she got the producers of the film to cast real survivors of HW. You won’t want to miss this. Please subscribe, share and leave us a 5 star review wherever you listen to your podcasts.
