On Wed, Dec 29th, a jury in a New York federal court found Ghislaine Maxwell guilty on five of six counts related to her role in Jeffrey Epstein's sexual abuse of minor girls between 1994 and 2004. 

Maxwell was found guilty of five federal charges: sex trafficking of a minor, transporting a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and three related counts of conspiracy. She was acquitted on the charge of enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts.

Maxwell, who now faces up to 65 years in prison, showed no reaction when the verdicts were read, though she did have a notable quote to the Judge, which we discuss.

We at RCP, and Laura in particular, followed this case closely, and now that there is a verdict, we wanted to share our thoughts and expert analysis with our listeners. There is a lot to analyze including the charges, the prosecution and defense strategy, the “false memory“ expert, the verdict as well as the potential repercussions of this landmark case, and what it means for sex traffickers and those who enable and aid and abet sex offenders.

We continue our interview with the Building Bridges Project team leaders Richard Washington and Marianna Wells — a program of the National Center for Victims of Crime. Richard points out that while there is a legacy of communities and families feeling uncomfortable reporting crimes to law enforcement — all it can take is ONE law enforcement officer who is trained and trauma informed to help make someone come forward with information about a crime. Support of victims and witnesses is critical. Laura talks about how accountability is important and that is what leads to trust. Jim explains how language and communication are critical skills in rapport building. Lisa wonders if communities don’t only mistrust police, but also fear retaliation for reporting crime.

Did you know that despite high rates of victimization, only 10.1% of Black serious violence victims received assistance from victim service agencies from 2010-2015?

Alarmingly, nearly 90 percent of victims of a serious crime did NOT receive assistance in the aftermath of their trauma. 

Jim, Laura and Lisa have a very real conversation about what’s going on and wrong with Richard Washington and Marianna Wells of the Building Bridges project (BBP) - a program of the National Center for Victims of Crime.

Richard and Marianna explain that BBP seeks to address underreporting, improve service provision and rectify disparities in treatment and services for crime victims from communities of color. This project promotes reconciliation through a productive and healing dialogue about what law enforcement should know in order to achieve effective encounters with victims of crime from marginalized communities. 

Laura asks about black women experiencing domestic abuse, sexual violence and/or stalking and what work BBP are doing to hear their voices and engage them. Jim draws an interesting comparison between UK and US police services and Lisa asks what the practical, grassroots work on the ground looks like. You won’t want to miss this.

We continue our analysis of a serial killer who raped and murdered at least 33 young men and boys. Jim points out how in this case and others, law enforcement assumed that all sex between gay men is consensual, and as a result they often did not take seriously reports of rape.  If they had, they might have stopped JG sooner when victims came forward accusing him of rape. In our new series, we deconstruct prolific serial killer John Gacy (JG) who raped and murdered at least 33 teenage boys in the Chicago area in the late 70s. Throughout this series we refer to him as JG as unfortunately this killer has received so much notoriety in life behind bars that it has obscured the names of the victims he killed and we do not want to contribute to that. We want to reframe this case and honour the victims.
